I used to grow a lot of different stanhopea decades ago under trees in my garden. I am really enjoying your videos, and it's great that you share your cultivation skills and experience. I am in Johannesburg South Africa.......I have my Stanhopea and coelogynae hanging under my loquat tree (ever green) all year round with dappled light and winter temperature under the tree sometimes as low as 2 °C the all grow So fast and the vanilla chocolate fragrance of the flowers fills the whole 1000sq meter garden and the inside of the house (even in the first year when there was only one flower spike like yours in this video) . I now have 4 large Stanhopea plants and have given away a few divisions......mine started from 1 small division given to me about 5 yrs ago. Enjoying your videos thanks.
I'm in Thailand. And we have a lot of orchids that bloom down from the side like your Stanhopea oculata. The way we plant this kind of them is to hang the wooden basket vertical. the potting mix and the orchard itself hang almost horizontal. We use wire, net or something to hold the orchid to the basket. This is to mimick the way these kind of orchids grow in nature. Hooe this help.

Very encouraging video, Matthew! I have a Stanhopea, exactly the same as yours, except that the "eyes" are black. I live in Cape Town, South Africa, where we have a Mediterranean climate, except in reverse to the Mediterranean, because we are South and they are North. I have had to split my Stanhopea into three plants because it has done so well, and the three live hanging in baskets in the semi-shade, on the southern side, so to speak, of the stem of a large tree out in my garden. I water assiduously in Summer, but virtually never in Winter, because it rains most days, or is at least cloudy and cool. Temperatures in Winter never go lower than about 8 degrees C, but Summer maxima are in the region of 25 to 33 C. The faded red blotches on the petals are the same as yours, but the eyes most definitely black. I am led to believe mine is S. Tigrina, but you may be able to correct me. Surely (though I have never heard anyone say as much), this flower is mimicking a hornet in flight? The drooping abdomen, the wings buzzing high, the drooping face with large intimidating eyes - this is a hornet flower, out and out! I seriously think Charles Darwin would have said this plant evolved to be pollinated by a hornet or similar flying creature! However, mine flowers in Autumn or early Winter - that might be because I neglect them a little more than you would ever do! The flowers last four days, and have a strong musky perfume which fills the garden on days our well-known South-easter isn't blowing! Thank you for showing us your occulata! Good luck with predator. Hi there - spring is always a great time to re-pot, but if you absolutely have to any time will be ok though you run the risk of interrupting any possible blooming if you re-pot in summer.
The flowers only last a few days but they are so spectacular so well worth the wait, My tigrina had quite a few bulbs that emerged over time and I had blooms for a whole month.
I’ve got Tigrina and this one too, growing in a shade house in Queensland. They do well in a nice open mix like yours, but I haven’t put any sphagnum in it, just mostly pine bark, charcoal and a bit of vermiculite. I’ve got wire baskets lined with coconut coir, they seem to push the flower spikes through without any trouble. This year I’ve been following a very similar feeding regime to yours and I’ve got some of my best spikes yet, first one will be opening in the next day or two!

Hi Matthew, I’ve just adopted my Dad’s Stanhopea orchids. They are going ok, we live in the Hunter Valley below Barrington Tops. I also watched your post on Phalaeneopsis orchids. When you water them in the glass & sphagnum moss, do you fill the container & then drain or just give a small amount? I love growing in a glass container, but am still learning. Hi Matthew, I live in WA, South. I have stanhopea nigroviolacea for over 3 years, it has close to 100 bulbs, and never flowered. Similar conditions, don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I told her, next year it will go in the rubbish bin if no flowers. 😅
Ah.....the three things to consider: they like to be kept moist, enough dappled light, regular liquid feeding AND a container that the flower spike can easily poke out of!

Ah....make sure there's plenty of room for any flowers to emerge! A basket with wide apertures and not too dense a lining. Good luck!

Stanhopea blooms are beautiful and usually wonderfully fragrant, I just can't devote so much space to a plant that blooms once a year for three days.
