As an advanced yoga practioner, I find that the most suitable definition of kriya yoga is self purification, self observation and evolving self awareness. Tapa is kind of heat generated by practicing pranayama, hatha yoga etc. Swadhyaya means detailed study of own self. Ishvara pranidhan means placing completely in inner most awareness. In yoga there is no Ishvara outside.
