There are a lot of theories why Eliza burned her letter. One of them is that Hamilton and Eliza were involved in some kind of financial scheme with the Reynolds and were about to get caught because the letters published in the Reynolds Pamphlet from Maria looked like they were actually written by Hamilton in an attempt to sound like an uneducated woman. The style was so similar to his own that Eliza burned her letters so they couldn't be compared to each other. But we'll never know...
Speaking of coughing, I was thinking about this the other day: When COVID-19 started hitting NYC, Hamilton still had a few performances going on. How awkward do you think it was for some people when James Madison was sick on stage and coughing into a handkerchief??
Honestly I disagree with the “too angry” comments. I feel like anger works very well in that part they were singing and then they compose themselves into a coldness on the last line. Rachelle and Solea do this very well and I completely believe them.
However, they described Eliza as gentle and kind. So much anger in her voice just doesn't fit her character. That's why Phillipa's version is so fitting. She sounds confused, hurt and a little angry but anger is not the main emotion evoked in her rendition.
@@gabrielabernal5596 I think with this song especially it's up to each actress what she wants to do with the role. Even a gentle person can show rage in certain circumstances. The song tells us that we don't know how she reacted when she went through this painful, private moment, so you can play it a bunch of different ways and have it still make sense. Then it's just up to the audience to decide which interpretation they like more.
Dude, this clip doesn’t do Julia Harriman’s voice justice. I watched her last year in Hamilton, in SF and her voice was just so hauntingly beautiful. I honestly can’t say whose voice I liked better, hers or Phillipa’s, she was so good.
She’s my cousin lol maybe i’m a little bias but she’s my favorite out of all the elizas. Don’t get me wrong, all of them sing beautifully but something about Julia is just unique and so angelic.
Solea gave me chills with all the emotions she put into that. You can really feel the hurt and anger, and then the coldness at the end, wow. But my god, they were all amazing. There wasn’t one where I thought eh, not as great as the others.
I wish there were more videos of Julia Harriman’s Eliza floating around. She’s so freaking good. I didn’t think anyone could be better than Phillipa but I saw Julia live in SF and she blew us all away. Pun intended.
I’m sorry but why is no one talking about Solea??! The moment at 3:54 when she picks up the letters and sings “the memories,” she has that slight moment of sadness cause she relives those moments for a quick second, and then goes right back into hurt and anger! Also that gaze is so strong and powerful yet subtly! I feel like there can be a lot of overacting in a song like this but she captured it just right! And her voice is phenomenal!!! She’s my fave for sure!! 😍
Your brain is more likely to remember the first time you hear something. That’s why so many us of us often favor Phillipa. It would react similarly if these other women performed as Eliza first!😊
I had never heard Solea’s burn before and wow...i’m in tears. she had so much anger and disgust in her voice, she sounded so vicious and i loved it. the way she put a very tiny delay on the last ‘burn’ and then made a disgusted face was really something that made me get chills.
Im torn between Phippa and Rachelle. In terms of sound, I like Phippa's better but I was looking for a bit more of anger and disgust. (you can't have your husband cheat on you and only feel sadness) Rachelle's emotion is what I think fits the song.
@@xxqueenxx5808 She did. But I felt more of the sadness. I guess I was just looking for a familiar reaction. Most people I know would not react the same way as she does when someone cheats on them. Rachelle's reaction is basically how I've seen everyone react to that same situation which is why it appealed to me more. dunno if I explained that right 😭
@@xxqueenxx5808 Don't get me wrong though. Even if I think that Rachelle's version is very true to the song, I still think that Phippa is better when it comes to being true to Eliza's character.
Ok Solea’s control on the ending that full-on belt is AMAZING . It’s so hard to fade out of something that you’re giving that much energy gradually rather then switching from loud to soft. I think it helps lead in to the ending super well! Julia’s is amazing too, someone else said it sounds detached and I love the different takes
Personally, I dont like to compare the actors to other people who play their part. I judge the actor for how well they did they're part, not how well they did they're part compared to others.
I love Solea’s raw anger. Also love Rachelle Ann Go when she takes that deep breath after the “you forfeit” section. It’s so Eliza- she takes just a second to compose herself as much as she can given the circumstances.
I feel like they were all to angry. Phillipa set's it up for the forgiveness. She's my favorite and detestably the best. Rachelle was really good too though!
To be fair, you do realize that it took a few years before Angelica had even forgiven him. It wasn’t just a few months, but years. I love rachelle because she adds so many emotions as well as the anger. She reveals the side to herself that the audience hadn’t seen before, and for that reason, I love her so much.
Julia's has the most nuance to me. It's a mix of anger, despair and pain. But her last line is calm and detached, which makes it feel ominous and almost creepy.
Pippa is the OG and I love her so much but I love Rachelle’s Burn, she sounds so angry and hurt, and Ari’s voice is so powerful, but my favorite has to be Julia Harriman, she’s incredible and you can tell that she’s feeling a lot of pain and disappointment, I cried hearing her.
Yes. When I went to see Hamilton, she was the one who played Eliza. I loved her because her version had the perfect balance of sadness and anger. That’s really important in my book. If I am ever fortunate enough to play Eliza, that would be a huge priority for me when I perform Burn.
That’s why I liked Zoe’s version so much; it’s the perfect balance of sadness and anger. I was so lucky that I saw her as Eliza when I watched Hamilton.
That's tough. It would be easier with better sound quality, but I did like the emotion in Zoe. Still, Rachelle and Philippa both seem to have better fullness and range to their voices. Anyway you slice it, it's a tough song, half almost sweet, half wicked angry. Edit: I found Rachelle's full recording and I think I still like Phillipa better. I like that she ends "cold"... like she's locking it down. I feel like that's the irony of the song - anyone who was REALLY angry probably would have come out swinging, but Eliza decides to 'get even' in a very calculated way, here. I like the wistful beginning, the angry build, and the cold end.
To compare audios with videos can be a bit unfair because people are unable to see the emotion! :( especially when that seems to be a factor in ranking. Aside from Pippa my faves are BY FAR, Julia Harriman and Solea Pfeiffer love themmmm. Wish there was a video for Julia!!
Rachel and Julia for me! Saw Julia live and she sounds real angry and disgusted and even has that raspiness in her voice towards the end. Brought me to tears
All of them struck a certain chord within all of us in certain ways, most likely having to do with which emotion correlates with our current circumstance. At times I’ve felt the resolute of Pippa and Ari, and at times the anger of Rachelle and Erin. This to me is the beauty of this song and the characteristics Eliza. Competition cannot apply to a work so incredibly interpretive. However I must say, Solea’s final note in “when you were mine” cannot be outdone. (IMHO) I haven’t felt a resonance for that specific pain in a long time. Personally, her performance struck a very strong chord. How a single note can move someone in such a strong way is exactly what Lin Manuel intended in creating the masterpiece. XOXOXO
Why did the West End Cast sound like an actual album in real life. Rachelle Ann Go definitely sounded like an album, and so did the other Schulyer sisters the end part where they hit that last high note on Schulyer sisters just sounds so amazing.
I saw Erin Clemons and she did AMAZING! I do think we need to stop comparing all of the women though because each has her own flair and her own techniques :)
Okay, of course we all love Philippa. However, we need to be talking about Solea and Shoba!! They both sounded incredible. I wish I could have seen Shoba act. She is a star! Her voice just melts the soul. It’s special. It’s angelic yet can be powerful too! Solea gave me chills. She was IN that character. I loved her interpretation. It was powerful! I also really enjoyed Sharon Rose’s voice, especially the power and chest mix in the bridge!
I definitely think you fall in love with the Eliza you see first. For most of the world, including myself,, that has become Phillipa. Along with being the one to originate the role, she’s the only one most people have access to.
I fricken love solea’s version she really did something unique and different with the song. her voice sound full and even and not strained and her timing was perfect whereas some of them get behind because they can’t catch their breathe.
THE LAST CLIP DOES NOT DO SHARON ROSE JUSTICE, I SAW HER BEFORE THE PANDEMIC AND SHE WAS HONESTLY AMAZING, HER VOICE WAS ANGELIC AND SHE BROUGHT THE ENTIRE THEATRE TO TEARS. Her Eliza portrayal in all was IMPECCABLE, LIKE SERIOUSLY AMAZING.
solea's "I hope that you burn" sounds like this low key edits of songs that people make for tiktok and IM LIVING FOR IT. solea puts so much anger and I love her vocals
i love this video so much. besides pippa, julia and zoe really stood out to me. i wish you’d included carleigh bettiol’s audio (it’s floating around on tumblr). you can hear a real innocence and sweetness with hers
I loved them all but....ZOE WHY IS SHE SO AMAZING. SHE CAN DO THIS AND BELT OUT BEFORE THE BREAKDOWN AS AN ALCOHOLIC CHEERLEADER CALLED FARRAH? She also went on as Annleigh one night as well. (This was all in the musical we are the tigers) And this was amazing. She’s great
Solea is the best because she is actually experiencing pain, anger, and hurt. And I love how she becomes resigned by the end. Actinggggg over pretty singing all day. Phillipa has a beautiful voice but isn’t actually going through anything. She’s just sorta suggesting that she’s angry and it’s boring. I also prefer Solea’s voice.
In my opinion, I like Phillipas better for the roll because I feel like Elizas character is very soft and innocent and naive and Soo’s soft tone really encompasses that. Solea has an out of this world voice but in my opinion, granted i haven’t seen her entire performance as the characters, it makes Eliza seem more bold and independent because of he strong tone and I’ve never gotten that vibe from her character. Just my opinion though and wanted to share. Both are unbelievably talented 💕
In my opinion, I think Solea has too much anger in her voice. I like Pippa's better because she maintains the fact that Eliza's character was so innocent in the beginning that she's hurt and confused, as well as angry. I feel like that sets it up better for the forgiveness, but I also think she just projects the character and emotions better. (Pls don't attack me this is just my opinion)
Zoe was the best. No discussion needed. Also I can't believe there are still people that say she sounds like a 5 year old and doesn't show any emotions during Burn.
1) Solea- her rendition was just perfect. She shows the anger Eliza is felling, but you can still see how she is heartbroken when she looks at the letters. She shows the range of emotions, but also the mixed emotions Eliza is feeling. A mix of pain, anger, and betrayal. Also, her voice is amazing 2)Sydnee-she doesn’t have a video, but her voice really says it all. She angry, and the last phrase is so sincere and haunting. It wasn’t as clean as Solea’s and felt slightly rushed, but that also increased the intensity of the moment. 3)Phillipa- amazing voice and her sadness instead of anger does set Eliza up the forgiveness much better, but compared to Solea and Sydnee it feels kinda empty and not sincere, like she’s holding back. All were amazing though!
Even comparing the few videos that there are I love the way Pippa disposes of the letters into the fire. Not only is her voice full of emotion, but you can hear the hurt in her voice and she looks as though she doesn’t want to let go of the letters and hesitates. Brilliant.
I saw Julia Harriman and this clip doesn't do her performance justice. She was unbelievably talented. Her Eliza had more depth and felt more true throughout the whole production. Loved her. During this song the entire audience was dead silent and there were gasps when it was over. It was so good.
its just the video uploaded a step down. it wasnt a key down. theres a full bootleg of that on yt somewhere. even more amazing when u hear how it was in the key
She is the OG, but that doesn’t mean she’s the “best” best Eliza. Each woman has her own flair to add to the character. All these women had to audition for this role so clearly, each woman was amazing enough to be a part of this :) each woman is extremely talented.

Sad Denée Benton isn’t on here! Saw her on Broadway and she was so so good, I had chills
Erin Clemons was everything
This clip doesn’t do Isa justice but it’s literally the only one existing 😫 she did such a good job
I will always love Phillipa but Julia holds a special place in my heart, I saw her in San Francisco a year ago and she absolutely blew me away
i love how it’s the same character, the same lines, the same song yet each performance tells a slightly different story
zoe's bitterness jesus that caught me off guard I love her
phillipa 🥺🤍 !!!! BUT I ALSO LOVE THE OTHER ELIZA’S. THEY WOULDNT BE ABLE TO BE IN THEIR PLACE IF THEY WERE’NT GOOD. BUT AAAA PHILLIPA!!!
they are all so good but my personal top three are Pippa, Rachelle, Zoe
I love Zoe too 😊
Sarah Andrewson IKR WHY IS EVERYONE IGNORING HER
julia will forever my favourite! she can literally play every Schuyler sister, i wish i had her voice!
Solea made me feel chills...y’all sleeping on her.
bummer they didn't have video of Shoba, she was the one I saw live and she was amazing
I definitely think you fall in love with the Eliza you see first. For most of the world, including myself,, that has become Phillipa. Along with being the one to originate the role, she’s the only one most people have access to.
Is it just me or does Solea's sound a half step lower? She did great tho
When I downloaded the video it came out a half step lower for some reason 😅
Yea it sounded like a filter was on her voice lmaoo
honestly it is AMAZING a half step down
@@gracejennings9034 yeass like u can feel the burn (definitely pun intended)
I loved all of them! It's sad how no one talks about Isa Barones, she was pretty great!(all of them were great doe ha)
I fricken love solea’s version she really did something unique and different with the song. her voice sound full and even and not strained and her timing was perfect whereas some of them get behind because they can’t catch their breathe.
Wow...this is a first -
#1 Racheal Ann Go
#2 Erin Clemmons
#3 Philippa Soo (I know....it surprised me too)
#4 Solea Pfieffer
Rachelle is my favorite Eliza besides Pippa, and I had the pleasure of seeing Erin live and she slayed the heck out of Burn.
Ima have to dissagree
rippletea Ok, good for u no one cares!
Shoba!!! I wish the audio were better, she's so amazing.
solea's "I hope that you burn" sounds like this low key edits of songs that people make for tiktok and IM LIVING FOR IT. solea puts so much anger and I love her vocals
Rachelle Ann Go and Sharon Rose were so good?!?!??? Like why is no one talking about them?!?!?!
Zoe Jensen! Saw her in Greensboro NC last weekend and she was magnificent!! Definitely my favorite Eliza on this song.
Rachelle and Phillipa’s showed sadness so I’d have to go with them
I think Zoe slayed this
So do I
Zoe Jensen is PERFECTION
I think they all have their own unique interpretations of the scene and their all amazing!
i love this video so much. besides pippa, julia and zoe really stood out to me. i wish you’d included carleigh bettiol’s audio (it’s floating around on tumblr). you can hear a real innocence and sweetness with hers
I loved them all but....ZOE
WHY IS SHE SO AMAZING. SHE CAN DO THIS AND BELT OUT BEFORE THE BREAKDOWN AS AN ALCOHOLIC CHEERLEADER CALLED FARRAH? She also went on as Annleigh one night as well. (This was all in the musical we are the tigers)
And this was amazing. She’s great
1 Phillipa 2 Erin 3 Rachel Ann
Good choices! These are my top three too!
I saw Erin Clemons back in 2019 and she’s amazing! Her vocal performance pairs perfectly with her acting! She’s one my favourites :)
I saw her too and she was amazing!
1. Phippa
2. Ari
3. Solea - best expressions while singing
4. Erin
If you could find James as Thomas Jefferson that would be nice
It /must/ be nice...
Rachel Ann Go??? So good
Yep! Rachelle Ann Go is one of my top Elizas!
@@meganlovsmusic I do enjoy her too
wow no Rachelle Ann Go
I wish you had Hannah Cruz up there. She blew me away in Boston. Truly an impeccable performance.
Philippa Soo set the benchmark for the role of Eliza, IMHO.
Y’all sleeping on Erin doe😭
Agreed
She was my Eliza! I thought she did a better job at conveying the emotions then some others.
i saw erin!! absolutely incredible i thought she did a wonderful job
periodt. She’s my favorite
She was my Eliza, too!
rachelle ann go turned burn into a whole opera solo and i love it-
Ok but Philippa is really impressive.
But can we also give credit to Zoe, Erin and Rachelle? Like, damn. They really did go off.
They are all amazing and talented in their own way! No one can ever beat the original, but all are still fabulous when doing this!
Yall sleeping on Erin's omg-
My favourites were Phippa, Ari, and Rachelle. But I did see Rachelle live so I definitely have a bias lol
So fun to hear this collection -- thank you!
Thanks
All of these are so talented i’m shaking
Even comparing the few videos that there are I love the way Pippa disposes of the letters into the fire. Not only is her voice full of emotion, but you can hear the hurt in her voice and she looks as though she doesn’t want to let go of the letters and hesitates. Brilliant.
I wish I could've seen all of these ladies (especially Phillipa) but I got to see Shoba and she was amazing in person!
Rachelle ang Philippa....both were asians.
And Shoba too
Baroness of Leeds Julia Harriman too, I think
Ari Afsar too
JULIA ALL THE WAY ❤❤❤
Sydnee was so good! Also, Solea Pfeffier was frickin amazing but she was a half note low. They were all stunning.
I saw Julia Harriman and this clip doesn't do her performance justice. She was unbelievably talented. Her Eliza had more depth and felt more true throughout the whole production. Loved her. During this song the entire audience was dead silent and there were gasps when it was over. It was so good.
Solea is amazing! I wasn't expecting an alto Eliza she killed it!
its just the video uploaded a step down. it wasnt a key down. theres a full bootleg of that on yt somewhere. even more amazing when u hear how it was in the key
This was 4 or 5 days ago but PHILLIPA IS THE OG ELIZA SHE IS THE QUEEN SHE WINS THE OG ELIZA
She is the OG, but that doesn’t mean she’s the “best” best Eliza. Each woman has her own flair to add to the character. All these women had to audition for this role so clearly, each woman was amazing enough to be a part of this :) each woman is extremely talented.
@@emmareffe1582 yes I know all them are very beautiful and amazing when they sing (๑ˇ▽ˇ๑)•*¨*•.¸¸♪ and I didn't say like Phillipa is just the best all the others are beautiful and amazing❤ sorry if you thought I said it in a mean way but I love all the women who played Elizaaa because they all had a talented voice
