This, the Mussolini name comes from his mother’s side. In Italian custom, you usually only get your father’s surname or, if you get both, you’re referred to only by your father’s surname. The fact that he made that choice deliberately is pretty indicative that not only he doesn’t condemn what the name represents, he endorses it.

The Italian Prime Minister is from the Far-Right Brothers of Italy party.
In the 1920s and 30s, economic problems that led to people in the working and middle classes being unable to afford to live led to populist politics from the right and left to become popular. Western Governments - including the UK and USA - feared the threat of left-wing politics more so allowed the Far-Right to get footholds in power.

To everyone saying that it's normal for the speaker to incite the fans to scream the goalscorer's surname... It's quite common in Italy, but at the same time the speaker usually repeats it only two/three times. To me it seems like he *really* went out of his way in this occasion... And yes, unfortunately it is becoming more and more common to see people celebrating fascism in this way, while the government does not act nor says anything about it. That's not only an Italian problem, I fear in the next years we're going to see more scenes like this in other nations, too

  • @tugabooga

Your general points are correct, but there is some important context missing on what is going on here. What they're doing is standard practice in several countries where the speaker screams the first name ("Romano!") and the crowd answers with the surname ("Mussolini!") while extending an arm forward (not the same as a Nazi salute, just basically throwing your arm forwards/upwards). If you want an example just watch a Benfica home game (we do it every time). What presumably happened was that some idiots decided that the doing the nazi salute would go unnoticed bc everyone would be raising their arms anyway. If you watch really closely you can tell the difference (specially in the last time when they shout the syllables like "MU-SSO-LI-NI!", you can distinguish both gestures; those who are doing the former are throwing their arms forward with every syllable, while those doing the nazi salute just keep the arm up all the way). Still a waaay too large percentage of the fans doing the salute, but it's not like the whole crowd's doing it unprompted i guess.

I use my philosophy major every day, and I have not once been a professional academic or professional philosopher (not that that’s a job that even exists). Studying humanities and liberal arts is about making you a more well-rounded person with the skills to critically analyze information, it’s about learning HOW to learn and how to formulate one’s own ideas based on the information given to them.

Genghis Khan was responsible for the deaths of over 40 million people (not including his own men) and the "SA" of up to 2.5 million women during his lifetime. Chairman Mao instituted policies that "ended" up to 50 million lives, most by starvation (one of the worst ways to go). Not saying The Treaty of Versailles through WW2 was no big deal but you overbilled it as 'the worst in human history'. I haven't even mentioned the Atlantic slave trade.

@@MtEaster for someone with degrees in journalism and history he shows perfectly how low the standards for that are nowdays. That celebration is done all across Italy, CR7 had it done for him numerous times and very easy to fact check.

Personally I think he shouldn't be able to play if he's not willing to condem his actions

He should be able to play if he hasn't condoned it, not the other way around. He is not responsible for anything his ancestor did, or a name he didn't choose for himself. Just assuming he is guilty and demanding a public statement is weird.

I think you're reading way too much into this
I'm pretty sure they're just celebrating the goal, and if the goalscorer's name wasn't Mussolini you wouldn't be making this video

i would say it’s common. napoli fans would do the same with higuain and juve fans did it with ronaldo

Juve Stabia is the second team of Juventus. They, in fact, CANNOT move up to Serie A

Juve Stabia is in no way connected to Juventus 😂, pretty sure there a team from Rome or somewhere close.

Juve Stabia is down close to Sorrento and Naples. They're also yellow and blue so just no way connected to Juventus at all
