  • Felting some sheep's wool into what some would call a "vegan sheepskin", although it's neither vegan or skin. I guess I call it "felted wool fleece". What would you call it?
    Hope you enjoy :)
    --------------------------------------------
    What I'm doing in this video:
    I bought sheep's wool - raw fleece - that had been sheared from the sheep so that it was still pretty much holding together as an entire fleece if handled carefully before felting it.
    I had extra wool that I carded (about 100gr) into rolags/roving/batt(?)
    Using a frame of wood and chicken wire (75x95cm).
    In the bottom of the frame I put bubblewrap with the bubbles upwards.
    I put the wool in the frame upsidedown (cut-side upwards). I went through it all making sure it was neatly packed and in the right directions.
    Then put the carded wool on top of the other wool in two layers.
    Drenched it all in warm water.
    Started to felt it, using a piece of tulle fabric just to be able to touch the wool without it sticking to my hands. More warm water and såpa (soap?) and keep rubbing the wool in circles on top of the tulle fabric.
    Then I rolled it together tightly, with a fabric around it and tied it together.
    Then I rolled this with my feet on the ground to felt it even more. Rolled it from all four edges of the "rug" - so open it up and reroll it on the stick from all sides to make the felting even.
    I think I rolled about 200 feet-rolls in total, but it depends on your wool. Check every now and then so you don't felt it too much.
    -Then I gave it a soak in the lake.
    Then I had to fiddle a bit with getting locks free and sort out some patches that had been felted too much and also remove some loose wool.
    When done you should I put it in the sink, twice with only water to wash it out, then a third time with a bit of vinegar essence in the water and let it soak for a few hours before I got it out and let it dry. (This last step is not included in the video).

    That was awesome. I am the felting guest artist at the oldest fair in country next week, doing demos, and I hopped on for some ideas,and I am going to try that. I need to see what I have that is't too veggy . Any words of wisdom?

    Are both sides of fleece scoured beforehand? Or is it better to have scoured roving for the felted back and still-lanolin-rich locks for the unfelted bit, so that they're less likely to felt?

    • @nymla
      @nymla  3 года назад

      English is not my first language so Im not exactly sure what you mean with scoured?:) I did nothing to the fleece, only added the carded wool(roving?) to the "backside":)

    I don't understand how the fresh wool sticks to the template? Does it knots to the old hair during the rolling procces or you use some kind of glue?

    • @nymla
      @nymla  3 года назад +1

      Im not so good at explaining in english but no glue is used, its only water and soap and rubbing/rolling etc until it starts felting:)

    You know what? The summer season gave me an idea, have you heard of sun bleached hair? What it you felted brown or black wool and left it out in the sun, would the sun bleach the wool? It might make for a unique look!

    • @nymla

      Well thats in interesting idea! :) I don't know how that works on wool, but I for sure will try it if I get the chance. Thanks :)

      Nymla youre right who knows if the sun will bleach wool it might be too coarse or thick.

    Is the point of this process to make a thicker wool by adding wool to the sheep skin? Would that be for more warmth? Durability? Texture on the skin? Thanks for the video :)

    • @rosemoon9219
      @rosemoon9219 3 года назад

      It's to make a landing for the shaved end of the wool. So it felts to a kind of backing instead of itself. This prevents the locks from becoming 1 felted mess

      @@tayshumway Its a fleece from shearing. No skin attached. Its then felted on the skin side with wool fibres to hold the fleece together and replace the job of the skin. You can instead pull the fleece apart and flat felt it.

    so only the side that has the carded fleece gets felted by the agitation and soap + water? and the other side keeps its natural fleece?

    • @nymla

      Yes that's right, unless you roll it too much then the other side will start to felt too.

      @@a2thej2008 Not really. You just have to roll, and check, and roll more etc :) It will probably be different for each fleece how fast/well it felts. Ps I have another video called How to make a wool rug, or something like that, it has instructions in the subtitles.
