Amaranth, the flower, is known for not wilting and has symbolized immortality since Ancient Greece. In Aesop's Fables, it's compared to a rose. A rose looks pretty, but it wilts. Amaranths, while less showy, last seemingly forever. I listen to a lot of Trans Siberian Orchestra, and they often describe night as a shelter, because at night when everyone is sleeping you don't have to worry about what other people think. The dark also represents the unknown/ignorance. Dawn/daybreak often represents new beginnings and change. Change can be very scary. Thus, "war between him and the day." He "needs someone to blame" because he doesn't want to admit that he's the one who needs to change. He can't do it by himself though ("in the end little he can do alone"). Amaranth represents everlasting/never-fading love. The chorus seems to be saying that if you find someone who loves you like that, you should appreciate them and never let them go because they'll be there for you no matter what. The second verse seems to be saying that time is fleeting and love like that is rare.
+Spotted Hyena Thanks for that! I knew about the symbolism of the Amaranth, but I was unsure about the "war between him and the day." Very well noticed of you!
This song has a story behind it. An angel fell from the sky but the people were afraid of her and tortured her because she wasn't of this world. In the end the angel left and took the people's blessings with her. Only than they realized what they had lost.
I got the collector's thingie and the insert had the lyrics to all the songs. Then my 23-year-old yet somehow so goddamn irresponsible brother broke the case. Then he scratched my Holy Diver album all to hell when he borrows my Dio, Rainbow, and Sabbath CDs without asking, and returning them to me only after I ask a third time right before I leave for a long trip. I was having Rainbow in the Dark and Straight Through the Heart withdrawal. At least I had some Heaven and Hell and The Last in Line to help me cope. I guess the point of all this is that throwing date stones may result in accidentally killing a jinni's son, and your hope lies in 3 traveling dudes with animal family members.
EVERYONE SING WITH ME!!! Carrots that wander, never fading, raining. You're hard! And Jesus' snow white Zorro! Carrots that wander, hiding m&ms in a lamb, after they break... THEY BREAK!!!!
"Anette! We got this jar of m&ms for the tour. Hide them so Marco doesn't eat the whole thing! ... Dear god, not there! How'd you get it so far up- that's fucking gross! Anette, you're fired!" XD
Anette may not have the status, nor the vocal range as well, and of course is lacking the overall LEGENDARY "Art" that is/was Tarja's performance(s)...But, as a diehard Nightwish fan...taking into consideration the absolute GARGANTUAN footsteps that She has had to follow into, as well as being an "up and comer"; really a singer that not many had been aware of before her signing into pact with the group...Having taken into account all of these things and looked at the situation for, not only what it is...but also, what Nightwish has BECOME in the years since She joined...You know, I can't really say a single bad thing towards Miss Olsson in any way, shape or form. She's no Tarja, and that was never the idea with bringing Her into the Band. But She has totally made a 'niche' of Her very own when it comes to being Nightwishs' female Vocalist with the mic in hand. She has definitely carved a slice of Nightwish timeline that, when reviewed with leniency and proposition, is QUITE much Her very own, indeed. Much Love to one of My FAVORITE Bands ever...REGARDLESS of who is at the "helm"...Because any TRUE fan knows that when it comes down to it, Nightwish was never Tarja and it's not Anette...Nightwish is musically, lyrically and composed by the air that's breathed by, as well as the living flesh and blood that embodies the Man we know as TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN. And that's a wrap.
To me, each singer in Nightwish brought their own unique style to the music. Neither one is worse or better than the other, but rather they are all different. If you had Annette sing some of the deeper songs written during Tarja's time, it normally doesn't work. And same if we had Tarja sing some songs that were written with Annette in mind (for example, I can't see Tarja singing Amaranth all that well) And right now we have Floor, who seems to have a good middle-range between the two singers and probably has the best range out of all the singers, but still has her own style and limits as well. If there ever comes a day where Tuomas leaves Nightwish for whatever reason, that is when Nightwish will be dead. Although to be fair, if he goes then the band itself might literally stop.
amazing... i love the mix of classic and rock.Ive seen them live in San Francisco and Anette was by far their best singer. she sounds just as good live as she did on an album. she is amazing and has an absolutely flawless stage presence. The whole band did an amazing performance. But she was and w3ill always be by far their best singer. Ive seen the one before her and after her and they dont even come close to matching Anette's voice or stage presence.
Amber Woolsey no Tarja is the best singer but Marcelo turned her to my dark side! (Yes I’m part of the dark side) you’d be surprised to see whut a ten year old such as my self could do
I don't know what it is about this song, but I am literally in love with how the lead/backing vocals mix and create a cool harmony, and the piano/keyboard is pretty awesome
+Ocean “ShadowBuddha” Tantric Lama I would never hate Nightwish for changing their style. I love all their material be it Tarja, Anette or Floor. All their albums are awesome, I will say however that the reason many people hate this is because it's such an abrupt change of style from the Oceanborn-Once era. Many fans (myself included) find this stuff a bit too formulaic. My favorite ones are songs like 'I Wish I had an Angel' - 'Ghost Love Score' and 'Stargazers'. Those songs are also much more fun to play on guitar :D But yes as I said at the beginning I love all Nightwish I'm just making a point and standing up for those who hate on this because I can understand why they would even though I don't personally.
@Twineecx No. It's Anette Olzon. If you listen to Bye Bye Beautiful, they are actually singing about Tarja Turunen. I believe Tarja is currently doing her own music right now away from Nightwish. It was a pretty bad argument she got into with the band. I had copies of the letters they sent back in forth but I can't find them since I moved.
I swear, when I was writing this one story, I eventually found myself returning to this song- and found myself getting a huge wave of ideas to put down. The song is truly fitting, and I think that I could really for once get a good book finished- and maybe even published, one of these days, if I ever get the courage to go that far.
Amaranth here is not referring to a grain as you can clearly tell by reading the lyrics. SonicDude5000 is correct here. The amaranth in the song is referring to a undying flower
@ZombieSlayerOfDoom XxEmmanxX46 is right... When she uses the word Amaranth in this song, she's referring to a flower that never fades. I presume she's referring to loving the one, the one that never seems any less lovable as his/her life goes on. *^_^* It would make sense that there is a godess of undying immortality named after it though to be fair.
WHAT. No, an Amaranthus flower, all known as amaranth, are quite real. There are around sixty species, and they do die, as they are perennial flowers. Amaranth just comes from the Greek word "ἀμάραντος" or "amarantos", meaning 'never fading'; and the word "ἄνθος" or "anthos", meaning flower. It's name may mean undying, but it is real, and is certainly not immortal.
There is a message behind the lyrics, though it's hidden behind a lot of metaphorical poetry. I may be wrong but the message I get is to stop being bitter and cynical and find the beauty that exists within yourself and/or life in general.
Just a little tidbit about the first few lines... "baptised with a perfect name" and such. The name associated with being "the doubting one" = Doubting Thomas. Variant of Thomas = Tuomas
Saw Nightwish at download Festival :D personal opinion the performance they gave worthy of main stage despite been on second stage :P totally love this band :)

Oh, the youth of mine... Never realise how good this piece actually is back then.
This song has a story behind it. An angel fell from the sky but the people were afraid of her and tortured her because she wasn't of this world. In the end the angel left and took the people's blessings with her. Only than they realized what they had lost.
So beautiful: a very melodious voice with metal... Magic.
Anette has a beautiful voice and perfect for this type of song.
This is one of the greatest metal hits !NIghtwish for all times.
This truly is a beautiful song
"Caress the one"? Oh great, I've been singing "Where is the one" all this time.
I got the collector's thingie and the insert had the lyrics to all the songs. Then my 23-year-old yet somehow so goddamn irresponsible brother broke the case. this is absolutely amazing... the intensity of both instruments and vocalists and the lyrics... bloody brilliant, eh? d|
Again: One of my favourite.

Amaranth here is not referring to a grain as you can clearly tell by reading the lyrics. SonicDude5000 is correct here. The amaranth in the song is referring to a undying flower
