Yeah, that's pretty rare. Does make it feel like you accomplished something though. It's hard to intercept those fast-moving convoys, especially on a calm and sunny day!
From what I understand it's supposed to happen much more often but one of the developers confirmed a long time ago that it's bugged in vanilla and most mods. Basically a lot of the time when you try to report it just simply doesn't because of the bug. Not sure if any mods fix it but I know GWX doesn't or at least the version I have doesnt. I've put hundreds of hours into SH3 GWX fully reporting contacts for the sake of immersion and I've only had support show up one time. I've reported contacts basically everywhere interesting at every interesting point of the war and got nothing. Even during Vichy France while I'm in the channel. The one time it worked a Luftwaffe plane (I think it was a Stuka?) showed up and attacked a target for me.
Albania was invaded and occupied by Italy in April 1939, as Mussolini's response to the German invasion and occupation of Czechoslovakia in March 1939. So Albania was an Italian puppet state in 1939-43, much like Vichy France. After Italy surrendered in 1943, Albania was occupied by the Germans until it managed to liberate itself in November 1944 (via efforts of Communist partisans).
27:56 It's simple, but cinematic shots like that that make your videos so alive and enjoyable to watch. I actually rewatched this scene three times before moving on with the rest of the video. So, good work with those, Wolfpack.
I really hope someone just gets the rights of SH3 and just relaunches the game with modern graphics and even better scriptable AI. This is all we need, such a classic!
The problem with the widespread use of allied radar is that it corresponds with increased submarine tower sizes because of ever increased flak gun armament. Both overproportionally added to the radar cross section of the submarines. An effect at that time virtually unknown/ not understood.
@@Kaarl_Millsyes. That's why later in the war they removed deck guns. But kept the anti air for peace of mind I guess because I haven't read many success stories of them being used.
Very nice episode. I think it reflects more realism about what submarine warfare was like during World War II. The entire drama of the war on various levels. Very heavy patrol. The success is that the crew persevered. All these sounds and imagining the attacks are very exhausting. I admire you for staying calm and in control of the situation. It's obvious you have a lot of experience. All these true sailors and airmen who fought in defense of Malta deserve great respect and memory. I am reminded of archival films where the ships of a British convoy enter the port with terrible damage - the entire bow is destroyed, another tanker is tilted, it is supported by other ships and the crew is fighting the fires in the sea. Many ships did not arrive, sometimes they were very short.

thinking of my time in cold waters i don't think i'd want to deploy a decoy at the depth i was hiding at down at 200 meters it could give away the fact that you can even dive that deep....i don't know what do you think?
Hmm! Were you observed by US Destroyers. The American vessels were about to start operations ! In the Mediterranean Sea. I stand corrected - it might be RN Destroyer with Three Frigates.
If the destroyer is doing a straight line attack when doing a depth charge run I wonder why they didn't develop a floating magnetic mine the sub to could release, the inverse of a depth charge if you will. Nothing worse than being shot at and not being able to shoot back.
They had launchers eventually that shoot the charges off the side of the boat quite far. By the time the mine reached the surface the battle would be in a completely different area. Not only that but I believe there were laws for mine laying for saftey of international shipping. Could you imagine thousands of mines just drifting in the ocean randomly after the war ended lol

I would really like to see how much destruction a modern sub could cause in these times. Would be interesting to have, let's say a kilo, fight against a huge group of warships or hunter killer groups and what they would be able to do, if even anything.
Not so familiar with Russian tech, but a US equivalent submarine could just pop up its radar mast and fire away with TASM or Harpoons before a WW2 ship even knew what hit them. WW2 radar would have no chance of picking up the radar mast.
Even the whiskey, which is the oldest vessel in Cold Waters and ended production in 1958, would be an absolute terror in the 1940s. The fact that it can dive well in excess of 200 meters, has wire guided torpedoes, comparable speeds with the type 9 that Wolf is driving, and much more sophisticated countermeasures and sonar, means it would be obliterating anything that didn't detect it first

I don't see the point in the new conning tower, why so much extra weight and resistance for just a single 20mm? Was a Wintergarten setup not available?
That is the Wintergarten setup. Also known as 'Turmumbau II'. However, historically, the Mediterranean-based U-boats from autumn 1942 to autumn 1943 were fitted with 'Turmumbau I'. This was a widening of the bridge to put on two double-barrelled 13.2 mm (0.5 inch) Italian Breda M37 Flak-MGs to supplement the traditional single 2 cm gun.
True, although in WW2 there were no homing torpedoes capable of tracking and sinking a submerged submarine. So the only way for a sub to sink another sub back then was to sink it while it was on the surface - which required calm seas.
