There is actually a fairly big competitive scene in...Microsoft Excel, of all things! But how the heck does that work?

@@yolobathsalts Man, you're hilarious for insulting a guy because he mistyped and mixed up 2 letters. That can happen to literally anyone when you type quickly.
They should try this in older versions of excel as a challenge.
Specially the first version of Excel for Windows (2.03) !
OG season
Lotus 123 and Visicalc 🙂
that's the equivalent of retro gaming.
It'd be a retro gaming session
At work where games are banned someone ported sonic into a spreadsheet. Actually ran pretty good
How does that even work?
Now I want a copy.
Man back in school we also had some sonic fan clone in a spreadsheet passed around as chain mail. That and the "helicopter game" spreadsheet, basically an early flappy bird.
I don't have those sheets anymore but always wondered how they worked. I guessed they were somehow embedding a flash player, but if those sheets still work today, they might be using some serious visual basic wizardry.
I used to play Angry Birds on Excel during work... hah, they thought that prohibiting minesweeper would work for them
The people usually forget that you can actually program on Excel using Visual Basic @@lexecomplexe4083
Never thought I'd reach the point in my life when someone mentions an Excel competition, and I am actually kind of interested.
What about side by side with a friend?
Lmao same 😅
You are likely still single.

My dad has excel sheets that take 50 minutes to load because they have so many goddamn formulas it basically is a standalone program at that point, optimizations is on par with AAA games now a days
My job is basically spreadsheets and I can tell you I've seen many spreadsheets that take 50mins to calculate that should probably take 50 seconds if done more efficiently. And if it really is taking 50 mins then at that point you probably shouldn't be using Excel lol
Your dad needs an SSD and probably a faster computer. And, he's likely not organized properly, he should find a way to split it into multiple files as there's a limit to what a single file can hold. 50 minutes to load a single file means he likely just keeps it open at all times whenever possible which is also very bad and dumb long term.
@@ashaw1016 he uses it cuz he's job requires it, he tried to convince them to allow python, etc... but they didn't allow, they are too old minded and don't know anything about tech, and yes it can be done more efficiently but after some trouble they made him, he makes the sheets slow on purpose as a form of quiet quitting
@@turgsh01 he has an ssd with dram cache, its no Sabrent nvme drive, but it's also no 5.2k rpm hdd, and a decent computer(ryzen 5 5600x, 16gb 3200mhz cl15 ddr4, igpu) he also makes them unoptimized on purpose after they gave some newer workers position he was promised for a long time when they basically said that as long as someone new joins to fill his place he will get the position he wants, just as revenge cuz they also cheap out on company computers so everytime someone wants to use any of his spreadsheets they need to waste 50 mins looking at a white pc screen, he says to them that it only takes so much time cuz the pcs are old.

This is so insane. I would have never thought something like this existed. Good for the people who are into it. Seems like a great e-sport.

Finally, an E-Sport I could theoretically compete in. I'm gonna have to spreadsheet some time for these events (not even sarcastically)
That 420 score draw was intense! The moment one of the pros brake out of there would be euphoric or frantic, depending on who gets positive points... or negative...
A lot of very nice moments! Very edutainment
My reaction zzzzzz...
I'm less surprised by the activity in question being made competitive and spectatory, than I am that the fictional ESPN 8 "The Ocho" from "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" has spilled out into RL.
People watch anything while I'm always trying to learn new things like how stupid people can be, and I'm about to reach the bottom 😂.
I saw some of those matches here on YT and the one I found interesting was about a hypothetical taxi/uber driver finding the optimal route to get his passengers around the city (spreadsheet) as fast and efficient as possible, they even had traffic rules and a few rules to forbid things like U-turns. I looked at the spreasheet and shook my head, especially at how fast some of them were "coding" their formulas, only twice a participant went back with an optimised formula and got more points, but only after having it crash in one of the (I believe) 20 city sheets, got extra points on 2 of teh cities as well!
The Traveling Salesman problem is a NP-C problem, not solvable in a closed form solution. I've also heard of an Excel spreadsheet that can play a game of chess (my hobby) though I've never seen it.
Accountants, mathmeticians, scientists, and engineers are correctly deemed “Turbo nerds”
Woohoo. I’m a turbo nerd!
You forgot the actuaries
yup, because they are the backbone of our society. everything else is just management
Forgetting computer scientists
honestly i think that hacking ctfs could make a great esports. all the ctfs i've seen have been interesting enough that if you got a good announce or you highly editted it like a game show, you could really easily turn it into a sport and at the same time create more awareness and education on how serious and fascinatingly complex cyber security gets;
live probably not, but edited as a game show i could see it. They just take too long for a live show.

Glad to see that EVE Online is getting more recognition as an e-sport.
Lmao
Funny enough the finals case is literally EVE Online
The Onion was ahead of our time with "data entry prodigy"
Krazam, as always, is a clairvoyant
MAKRO, baby!
Hope they nerf xlookup
My favorite Excel event was in 2019 when Vikas beat MAKRO at Balmercon 2019.
Love this one
I'm surprised that Riley didn't cover the 3D engine someone wrote in Excel. It implements ray tracing without any VBA. YT hates it when comments link to stuff, so Google "3D engine entirely made of MS Excel formulae".
The game where people guess the place on earth by looking at a 360 ground view image chosen by the opponent is pretty interesting as well lol
There was a clip of one of the dude found the place within 25km of that picture with only a road with crops on both sides. No signs what-so-ever. I was amazed and found that they could tell by hints like what the road is made of, what plants grows where, the lines on the road fits which country...etc.
2:02 “we’ll tell you right after our sponsor… _google sheets_ “
they should have competitive CAD. how fast can you resolve revclouds on a floorplan from sketch into revised drawing.
What comes after that? Competitive CMD?
Vikas may have won last year but I’m still holding out for Makro’s comeback this year
Thanks, editor, for the questions at @4:50
This is so wacky and goofy and mega-nerdy. I love it.
Interesting! I am a big spreadsheet fan, but had no idea of the eSport tie in. Thanks for posting!
Excel has been an MMORPG since 2003 (also known as EVE Online or Spreadsheets Online). A spreadsheet editor has actually been included in a recent update.
You jest, but the finals case I literally an EVE Online case using that plugin.
This feels like an unused April's fools joke left to fester that you cracked open in November.
Oh wow, the prize pool means the winner gets another year of license for it!
Imagine inserting your excel rank on your resume:
- excel skill level: diamond 🤣
I remember someone here at RUclips created a DAW in Excel, and that was damn great.
I competed in Excel competitions as part of UIL Academics in the early 2000s in high school in Texas. Never thought it would get to this level.
My grandparents would have been hyped for an excel competition.
A company 20 years ago wanted me to try the excel world championship as a advert for them. Only i was too old 😂
I'm surprised that at 5:36 flight simulator excel 97 wasn't mentioned

Been interested in Excel tournies for years. They are so impressive
Love this kind of videos!! ❤😊
as an excel nerd and an accountant, I am so stoked
This is like having a competition doing taxes.
Excel 95 and 97 had games coded into them as easter eggs. Some weird doom-like in 95 and a flight sim in 97.
you could say this tournament, spreads the winnings out for you.
it's very, productive.
the winners are, excell-ent

Excel? I’m just trying to exist man.
There's also a farming simulator e-sports. Goes to show you can't force e-sports into existing like with all the battle royale games
The best part of the video was the slippery stairs, which im going to see next.
Got a power point there. Word. Quite the VISIOn of future e sports. Outlook is positive.
These dudes have no maidens.

No Aim-assist esports. Perfection.
The real competition should be who teachers their co-worker to click and drag values fastest.
You clearly didn't do your reaserch. Competitive excel has been going strong for many years now in Ballmercon.
This is possibly the most hilarious real thing I’ve ever seen…
Using Excel for work and after that to manage my Football Manager save with updates and some kind of logic to see what is best tactic for Tiki-taka 4-3-3 while playing Gegenpress 5-2-3 is fun, right, right 😆 Nerdy tactical simulation as some people say - it's like Excel in some part of your save.
Yes because unlike EA FC. FM is mostly spreadsheets with a complimentary match engine.
Man i got an adrenaline rush.
Can't wait for Paint eSports
The Help shortcut F1 is a the bane of competitive Excel because it's right next to F2 which is the edit shortcut.
can you bring your own keyboard? i wonder if people just remove the f1 key lol
You had me at corgi racing

But will there be a pivot tables challenge in the competition. If so, I will need to sharpen my skills 😂
This brings me great joy.

It's cool there is a competition for this.
The problem is, it is almost impossible for viewers who are not real experts using Excel to follow what is happening. I am pretty good with Excel but nowhere near this level and I couldn't follow most of what was happening.
That said, I hope this succeeds.

Excellent
We already have competitive Excel. It's called EVE Online.
I would love to see old school esports with Lotus 123 or Wordstar
If I recall correctly, that Wordstar program was on my dad's computer and he got a computer before I did. But We're talking early 1990's (he died in 1994), and managed to get some things created with it. We both tried to figure things out with it.
I guess we can't have esports with punched-card programs, though. We could have confetti battles though. Those punched chads collected in a bucket on the keypunch machine. Since I had hair when I was in college, the main goal of those battles was to not get any chads in your hair. Fun times.
