I was there in Buenos Aires, October 15, 1988 for the last concert of the Amnesty Internacional 40th year celebration tour. Incredible show that lasted 8 hours with some of the best musicians of that decade, Bruce, Sting and Peter Gabriel. Half of the E Street Band played in this song, Nils Lofgren on guitar, Bruce on vocals, Roy Bittan on keyboards and The Big Man Clarence Clemons on sax !!

This was part of the Human Rights Tour 1988. Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel and others toured together. Parts of the E Street Band were in this band too.

The whole E Street Band was there on the tour. I think you mean parts of the band were in this performance. That's true.

At a minimum, I saw Nils, Clarence and Roy playing on this song. Good old jam. It’s amazing how great pro musicians can do that and fit in and not miss a beat.

Combining overplay and creepy stalker vibes - a song that I'd also be OK with never hearing again - this was pretty good- rating is a good balance.
I think part of Bruce's power is that he never mails it in- he enjoys performing and you can feel it.
By my count this is at least the second song you flat out admit you don't like ( see- Staying Alive) he's been involved with a version that you have enjoyed- plus several songs that usually aren't in your wheelhouse that you grooved to.

There was a load of totally unnecessary criticisms from Bruce fans at the time about why Sting was singing on The River, but yet those same critics had no such criticisms for Bruce singing this. In so far as it was for charity all those critics need to lighten up! It’s a great version and Stings input on The River was remarkable with exquisite vocals. As for the song itself, it’s not only the biggest police song, but also THE most played song in history, as remains the case in 2024 with airplay beyond anything written by Bruce and anyone else which is a measure of its greatness.
