Thanks Mike for the great memories of Rice St.. I grew up on Rice street as well, but it was during late 50's- 60's and I have many pleasant memories--hanging out at Burger Chef, Mama's Pizza, Sylvan playground and the Rice and Lawson playground. I played hockey at Como Jr. High and Washington High School and had some great friends (and hockey players) who grew up on Rice Street like Jimmy and Dennis Costello, Steve Delmonico, Tom Prudhomme, Tom Becker, Dennis Patsy, and so many others. I used to walk to Gump's Fish and Bait store to get my skates sharpened and almost always came across not Bones back then, but Mickey the Cop who was a fixture on Rice street. My dad used to hang out at Ron's Bar and played on the bar's fast pitch softball team and he used to work at Northern States Power Company. I live in Temecula, Ca. now, but nothing compares to Rice Street---it is HOME. bob eilek
He used to keep me company when I worked nights at Brooks Food Market back in '91. Now I deliver to the area once a week, and Bones is still out there, now pushing an overloaded wheel-barrel. Kind of a comfort to see him. Some things have not changed.
Fun watching these Rice Street Shorts. You are so genuine. Thanks.
I grew up on Rice Street in the 1980s and I remember seeing Bones all the time. I went to St. Bernard's, and of course we would go to the Burger Chef after church on Sundays. My father was a cop for St. Paul in this area, and the east side, and he knows Bones well, too. Thanks for the memories!
As a current business owner in The Neighborhood, thanks for this! Love to hear more history of the area! (North/East End)
Bones has a heart of gold & I have grown up seeing him on Rice Street since I was 7 yrs. Old!!!He's the true meaning of a survivor...People really need too show him alot of appreciation & respect to him cause he shows everyone that anything is possible & you make the best out of every obstacle you face in your life...He's a great man & God bless his soul...
Awesome video, couldn't have said it better myself. I also grew up in the Rice St area and remember bones very well!!! God bless you bones!!!
You my friend spoke TRUE Now Hardees gone (most things are) Hope life has treated you well. Hugs!
I knew Mike from the 70s. He was a couple years younger than me. We went to the same high school, Washington, though not at the same time. I lived in the area in 67-70 on Marion (951). Again in 74, on Front St. 2 blocks from Mama's Pizza. I hadn't seen him again until the 90s. My brother in law Nathan knew him quite well, having lived in that area off and on for years. We caught up with Mike one day in the mid 90s and bought a couple pizzas from Mama's and ate them in an alley with him. It was surprising to me how much he had changed. One thing I do remember well, is that he would not accept money (at least at that time), unless he worked for it, but he would accept food. Never saw Mike again until 2013, when I happened to drive down Rice St, Taking the long way to Circle Pines/Lino Lakes. He was walking down Rice St. pulling his little caravan behind him. I'm sorry to say I didn't stop. But I have always remembered him.
Great video! Next time you see Bones please tell him Taco said hi ! my husband has many stories to tell and was his friend back in the day.
