A general tip in rhythm gaming is that you don't want to focus on the notes itself unless if it makes it easier for you. When you can't read the notes by following them, rely on your peripheral vision by shifting your vision to the center of the screen so you are able to see all the notes. When you can't read it with your peripheral vision, then it's probably best to stop playing that level and come back when you are feeling good or after more practice (it's good to tackle levels beyond your scope every now and then to gauge your progress).
tl;dr - for the most part, you want to focus more or less on the center of the screen and let your peripheral vision do the work.
