Trains are much, much, faster and generally more comfortable. There are several train routes between Bristol and Brighton, either via Southampton, which is quite scenic, or via Reading and Redhill, which has mostly new rolling stock, is fast and also scenic. None of the routes go anywhere near London. The ticket pricing rules for trains are arcane; in general book a couple of weeks in advance and use the rail ticket office to help you. If you follow those rules it won't cost much more than a coach, but will get you to your destination faster than by car. Most rail stations are located in the centre of town. If you leave it to the last minute to get a ticket then you WILL pay a LOT. The online website for rail travel in National Rail Journey Planner. They will give you a price and the option to book online, but I have found that visiting the rail ticket office at the local station sometimes gives better options. Coaches between London to Brighton are usually designed to serve Gatwick, because Gatwick airport is used a lot for European holiday travel. Anybody who is familiar with UK public transport would probably use rail, there are trains every few minutes from London Victoria to Brighton and it takes around one hour.

National Express is awesome because it's so cheap, but I find it SUPER uncomfortable and the journeys are pretty long too. We usually try to sit as close to the front as possible for avoid any kind of motion sickness. Sometimes it's worth the difference in price to just take the train instead if you can swing it.

Really nice to see foreign visitors using our coach network, run by National Express and Megabus, it's very affordable and is truly a national network just like the railways, with frequent services on main routes and provide airport services as well. They often pull into bus stations in city centres, so connect up with local bus services easily too. Many coach stations have been modernised in recent years and have comfortable waiting areas, shops, cafes, bathrooms, helpful staff and information offices.
Yeah, coaches are not as fast as the train, but they get you there. The buses are modern, often have wifi and charging points, are fairly comfortable, clean, have bathrooms and stop at service areas on the longer runs. Some of the overnight long distance services are really cheap, like £10 to Scotland from London, when booked ahead. You can also buy a coach card for discounts, useful for frequent travellers.

Yes, we started to build urban motorways in central London in the 70s, but gave up because it was unpopular and smashed down a lot of housing - and probably would have ended up being one huge traffic jam anyway. So nowadays, getting out of London is very slow in some directions. South is the worst - it can take well over an hour by road to do just 20 miles on the A23 route south through built up areas to the countryside.
