Many have reported that the tray will overfill with water - causing water to leak over into the collection bin, which then turns all of the ice in the bin into one big ice block. There are two popular online causes listed for this behavior, but I believe there is a third culprit. The two causes that you'll find listed are 1) water pressure is too high from the supply causing overfill, and 2) a faulty water inlet valve that is dispensing or leaking too much water into the tray. I believe the 3rd cause is much more simple - over time you will get mineral scale buildup in the bottom of the ice tray cells. The scale buildup causes the frozen cubes to occasionally (or frequently) not eject from the tray properly. Sometimes you will get a cube or two that don't eject at all, and sometimes you will get cubes that break and only part of the cube falls out into the bin while leaving part of a frozen cube in the bottom of the cell. Look for cubes in the bin that seem to be missing the tapered end of the cube. There is no "fill sensor", it just dispenses a preset amount of water, so when the cubes don't eject properly, the water overflows on the next fill. You can remove the whole assembly and try to clean out the mineral-scale with vinegar, but more than likely you'll eventually just need to replace the whole assembly. It's a shame that it's not possible to just replace the tray.

I was noticing the odd cube not ejecting, then the overflow sitty. Thanks for the reset button test! I'm glad I didn't buy a new ice unit though the prices used on eBay for a reman unit are very good $40-50 range.

Having the same issue with overfilling of the tray. Water also gets into the ice bucket below and freezes all the ice cubes together. I'm not sure if it's happening because of the overflow or if the tray is not in the right position when it fills. I couldn't locate a reset button until I saw this video, so thank you!!!!

I've been having a similar issue. Watching this has enabled me to figure out what is going on... or rather not going on. My tray was twisted, but I managed to reinsert it correctly. The startling knocking sound that began this morning and lasted for 20-30 seconds each time was the plastic thing trying to turn the ice cube tray. It's in a unit with wires so I won't mess with that. But at least I now know what was causing the noise! Oh! And I didn't realize there was an on/off button for the ice maker until today! At least I can turn the ice maker off so I don't get fricking scared out my pants when I least expect it - literally jumped out my skin making coffee this morning, when it first happened! Thank you for your video!

why do they make these components with the flimsiest plastic? jesus....i dont get why it's so fucking hard for these manufacturers to make a reliable ice maker....it's not just LG but so many other brands, like is it that fucking hard?? i don't get it, we're in 2022 and ice makers still having problems

FYI. Another video from a repairman said water pressure issues will cause the overfill problem. Not enough or too much pressure. Pressure needs to be between 40 and 120 psi. You can check pressure at any outside faucet with a common gauge you purchase.

Thanks for the video. I located the reset button, thanks to your video. Mine is not making ice, but after pushing the button on the bottom, it did "flick" some ice cubes out... Don't know the root cause yet, but, looks like I can get a replacement on Amazon, if needed. Thank you again... especially not easy to work on! Cheers!

It's a lot easier to just remove the two screws and unplug the whole unit.. The icemaker is bad, just replace it, assuming the water pressure is in range.

Mine stopped dropping the ice - found the reset button on the bottom freezer reset, pressed it and the tray emptied the ice. Why would it not drop the ice by itself?

I have the exact same issue. Looks like piece of plastic from tray snapped off (never found piece) tray where it attached to motor arm. Cannot locate replacement tray that fits this ice maker unit only full ice maker replacement. Curious what solution you came to? Thanks

My AEQ72909603 ice tray cracked so I recently bought a refurbished AEQ72909602 assembly for $60. Once the replacement was installed the arm wouldn't work so.... I just popped the ice tray out and put it into my assembly. It fit perfectly and works great. Of course there was nothing wrong with the motor of my ice maker, just the cracked tray.
