  • Guildford Cathedral Choir, directed by Barry Rose:
Evensong at Guildford Cathedral, 28 November 1970:
(1st movement of BWV 140 "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme", first performed in 1731. To a 1599 hymn tune by Philipp Nicolai. Arranged by Ebenezer Prout. Translation: Georgina Troutbeck. Conductor: Roger Lowman. Organ: Barry Rose & Anthony Froggatt)
Sleepers, wake! for night swift is flying,
The watchmen on thy walls aloud are crying,
    Awake, thou city of Jerusalem!
Hear ye now, ere comes the morning,
The midnight call of solemn warning.
Where are ye, O ye wise virgins, where?
    Behold, the Bridegroom comes!
    Arise and take your lamps.
    Alleluia.
Yourselves prepare, your Lord draws near.
He bids you to His marriage feast.

Love this recording as I used to love singing this cantata. Shame we sang in English in those days!

Yes, it looks as if the first time the choir sang in German was 1971 - unless something else turns up in the archive to show otherwise.

We now know that the choir's first outing in German took place at the Royal Albert Hall in 1968 but technical problems with the recording prevent us from uploading it.

English words,.. well, if it was a regular evensong, probably the congregation would have been largely native. Let them have the pleasure of understanding what they were hearing :-) "Sleepers, wake!" is a good stirring translation, too.

Jennifer Gratwick Not quite "regular" perhaps, in that it was Advent Sunday, but it's a good English text anyway.
