Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling) is a hymn written in German by Philipp Nicolai, first published in 1599. The hymn was used as the foundation of Johann Sebastian Bach's chorale cantata BWV 140. In the cantata, this movement was sung as a tenor solo, here it is arranged for tenor and bass, with bassoon and horn doubling the parts.

I love the calm with which this is sung. It is usually sung faster, but it is calling us to Awake ! We are still drowsy as the Lord is coming ! Thank you , ms. Crocker. I just would have wished you an organ for your fine performance. I remember this Lutheran music was used in 1963 on the Italian TV RAI on the occasion of Pope John XXIII's death. Very moving hymn by the Great Bach. My compliments to all. From a Catholic friend.

Just the right speed for me -Andante-
The counterpoint between the ostinato piano and the voices is beautiful to behold at that moving pace.

Nice and inspiring but... if the text is of joy and hope why making it too solemnly slow? "Sion hears the watchmen shouting...Now come thy precious crown... Lord Jesus God´s own Son, Hossana!!! A faster and snappier beat would certainly enhance the inspiring words by Pastor Nicolai. I am sure that Bach even danced on the organ pedals! God Bless

KEY / 41PH4 / GO_PRO I also believed that until the recent movement to rediscover true baroque interpretation with so called authentic instruments proved differently. Also, Bach´s Lutheran faith was applied to his work in Leipzig with his cantatas following the texts and chorales by the use of tonal painting i.e. sad words were accompanied by sad music, joyous words were accompanied by joyous music, etc. It is also worth mentioning that Bach rarely composed the music to the Lutheran chorales (they were always by other composers, mostly local pastors). Still, Bach wrote amazing accompaniments like in the case of this video: music by Philipp Nicolai arranged by Bach. Hopefully this will help you to catch up with new discoveries about Bach´s amazing output. Greetings and blessings to you.

Snappier and faster would not respect what the song is. Most musicians do NOT respect this song and hurry through it. Listen to the message and what it is saying. Taking a slow, mellow pace and allowing the notes to resonate is the purpose of the song. VERY poetic and very empathetic song.

Needs an organ for full effect, not a piano
