- Love it or loath it, 24 Sussex Drive is the Official Residence of the Prime Minister of Canada. Long neglected, it hasn't been lived in since 2015. The National Capital Commission wants it fixed or replaced. But how did it become the Official Residence in the first place? Where did Canadian Prime Ministers live before?
THIS EPISODE’S QUESTION: What should Canada do about 24 Sussex Drive?

I would like to see this house fully renovated. The Prime Minister and the first family should have a private, safe home, to live in. The house should be a home that all canadians would be proud to offer the first family to live in. This house should represent the pride that canadians have for our country, and our countries culture. Surly we can find the appropriate amount of funds to properly restore this house? It is the responsibility of the country to offer the Prime Minister and the first family a first rate home! The renovation should be complete enough to keep the home in good condition for another 100 years!
Rideau Cottage is not a suitable home for the PM. It is well appointed but not suitable for the required staff, state rooms and offices.
24 should absolutely be caved in and rebuild as green as it get and it would be point of pride.
I always was thinking to close to the governor general as well .... we need to keep those guys separated ... nice that the Goveror general offer this home for him.
Great video. I enjoyed the topic. I disagree with your last point, however regardless if there is the. PMO or Harrington Lake. Tear the Band-Aid off and build something Canadians can be proud of.
Although, as you quoted with the granstein book, we have a toxic streak of frugality and apathy in the country that seeps into tangible changes (Military Procurement/ and official residences)
Excellent tour! I learned a lot (about our history as well). I’m suspect of the NCC estimate to renovate 24, but, nonetheless, that’s my vote. Just like Canada’s allegiance to the monarchy, I’m a traditionalist.
What if they built something underground - like a shopping mall, similar to the underground stores they have in Toronto? Then they could save the building as a tourist attraction, and the mall would not detract from the quaint, historical facade of the area. Obviously, the mall would also make the property useful and profitable. And finally, as pointed out in the film, Prime Ministers tend not to be too attached to the place anyway, so why bother making them live on that property?
Keep the prime minister where he is cheaper on security within the grounds of the governor general. And maybe repair 24 Sussex Street and open it to the public, and the prime minister could still use it for events.
I didn't know that they could make a residence where his house is located.... If they are going to do anything to 24 Sussex Drive... I believe it would be better tear it down and created a new residence that is more up to date and give them better security resources for the property. There are claims that Prime minister house is to close to the main road ... being that Canada is a peacekeeping country and friendly ... I don't think our Prime Minister would have a problem. If they didn't touch this PM the worst one in Canada history why we worry about other PM.
I'd be ashamed if this was my countries symbol to the world
The Governor-General is not the head of state of Canada, they are the Vice-Regal Representative of the Sovereign of Canada. They represent the Head of State, they are not the Head of State, themselves.
Still funny that Canada's official head of state British 😂
It should be turned into a homeless shelter!
I think that's a great idea.
Given todays housing market, they could sell 24 Sussex and then cancel taxes for the year.
No Doubt!
