This one is certainly not regarded as one of Lovecraft's best, even by Lovecraft himself, partly due to being written as a serial, which is why there's a bit of a recap at the start of each chapter. Still, it's a bit of a classic that I think people will get a kick out of.
But it sure ain't one of his surprising worst, all things considered. Plus, it did spawn a real good 1985 movie featuring Jeffrey Combs, well known as the Question in Justice League Unlimited.
One of my all time favorite horror movie performances. Jeffery combs is so underrated. Ironically he was cast as the kind medic ratchet in transformers prime.
The repetition in the chapters make it clear that this story was originally published as a serial, making it necessary to re-introduce the characters and basic situation to a reader who might or might not remember it from the previous publication.
I love the story, especially the character of Herbert West and the intellectual friendship between him and the narrator. I also like how West isn't a stereotypical mad scientist outwardly and it seems realistic to me that he'd begin by justifying his obsession as the desire to cure death, but lost interest and sight of that as his pursuit was selfish all along. That he can't stop himself from doing what he's obsessed with just for the sake of doing it seems like how some real brilliant scientists behave, and behaved when creating regrettably horrible inventions. Use or misuse being an afterthought.
Darn. If only I serendipitously watched the Reanimator movie directed by Stuart Gordon and featuring Jeffrey Combs before this video, hehe. 0:00: Chapter One - From the Dark 15:01: Chapter Two - The Plague-Daemon 29:45: Chapter Three - Six Shots by Midnight. 44:02: Chapter Four - The Scream of the Dead (57:36: Neat performance there, TES.) 57:47: Chapter Five - The Horror from the Shadows 1:12:35: Chapter Six - The Tomb-Legions
While not one of Lovecraft’s grander cosmic narratives, I have always quite liked this one. It’s a simple horror story well told which I first listened to while exploring a graveyard
Glad to finally get to this one suprised you grabbed a "unsanitized" copy (tho idk if many of Lovecraft's works can be made less imediately racis, and this one will always burst people's bubble)
Fantastic reading i can see why maybe not his best work with so much time taken to reiterate previous information, but a very enjoyable and ominous experience. Thank you
I just wanted to say Thank You 🙏 for this wonderful narration and for Never failing to go above and beyond with everything that you gift us with!😊👍 You are Truly Appreciated Brother!😊👍
I must say that there's immense potential for phenomenal movies simply based on H.P. Lovecraft's stories. Of course they need to do it justice and that's a massively tall order, especially since most creatures are 4th Dimensional of Cosmic Horror.
There used to be this guy on YT who impersonated HP Lovecraft, and I used to watch his "Ask Lovecraft" show every week. But he stopped doing them a few years back. He still turns up doing voice work for other people's videos, though.
For as much Lovecraft as I've read I don't think I've ever read this one. I saw the movie, know the references, but I've either never read this or this is the one Lovecraft tale I don't like and keep memory hole-ing.
Herbert West is a pure materialists. To him, life is nothing more than mechanical and chemical processes. If he held perhaps any reverence or notion of the sacred, he might have avoided his fate.
Love listening to these and somehow still being more appalled at the racism than the gore lol. Also im only on chapter four but if this man describes how him and west met in the medical college at miskatonic university where his Now Missing Then Partner and himself would try to reanimate bodies im going to throw something
@michaelandreipalon359 Likely thr description of the black boxer called the Harlem Smoke. It's very racist by modern standards. Lots of comparison to apes monkeys etc.

It isn't? It's an amazing piece though.

Man this is really good one. Herbert is a great “modern” Frankenstein for lovecrafts day
Couldn’t have asked for a better background for my laboratory session

One of his rougher stories but still creepy at times. Definitely love a good reading, helps makes the work days more tolerable.
For something he was phoning in, it was surprisingly good.

Lovecraft was doing it as a job. a publication hired him. And with the story he had to spend some time doing recaps
Love hearing some lovecraft read in your wonderful voice.

Dang. Miss my d&d necromancer I named Herbert Wesker. 😢
dont mind if i re-use that for an npc in a private game right ?. its pure Gold !

Guys... im starting to think that Dr. Herbert West, former student of sesketonic university medical school mysteriously disappeared a few years ago...
How mysterious and medical...
Super cool to see more books on this channel.

Nice change of pace from the SCP stories
Thanks for everything Mangg, top tier narration content for years now!!
Always love listening to your Lovecraft covers
I've been waiting for a new lovecraft reading! Awesome vid, thanks mangg :)
Is this the story SCP-049 was based upon? I notice many similarities in which SCP-049 and Dr. West reanimate corpses.
Definitely an HPL classic! Great choice!
I love this story
one of my favorite stories by him, seriously underrated.
Oh wow. Now this is a blast from my adolescence!
Thank you Mang. A very pleasant surprise.
:)
One of my favourites from Lovecraft, thank you for the reading. 🙏
Oh my goodness! You did it!
Thank you. Saw and listening to it now
!! I was just rewatching all of the other HP readings! Thank you!
I don't normally catch your videos so early and it's Herbert West??? ❤
Always loved this one, the unsettling nature of death and what might lie beyond has always fascinated and terrified me.
Thank you so much I’m here for any audiobooks ever 🙇♂️

love these audio book videos!
To everyone mentioning it in the comments: Yes yes, we know that Lovecraft was racist. Times change, move on and just enjoy the story.
At least he was an equal opportunist in that regard 😒😔
I wonder if this is how Batman got the name Arham, and how Halo got the name of Dr. Halsey.
It'd be very on brand for both.
13 seconds ago??? And I just checked your channel??? This is a blessing
Turns out the shlocky film is closer to the original text than I remembered.
37:25 jesus christ lovecraft i'm listening to this in public
I mean, it's Lovecraft, you know the blatant racism is coming eventually. This is tame for Lovecraft.
Stayed up just for this

Pretty good
The ending is weak by HPL standards. As blasphemous final revelations go, "they were silent" isn't a very soul-shattering one.

Does anyone know if this had been published as a series?
Imagine if Dr West found The Necronomicon damn.
He world reject it. West is a pure materialist and wouldn't believe in magic

Is there a reason Lovecraft recaps the story at the beginning of each chapter?
TES explained that in the pinned comment- this was serialized instead of published all together

this is straight up fullmetal alchemist...
What did he say?
Move your dead bones bones bones
one of Lovecraft's rougher works when it comes to one line in particular

No, actually. CPR wasn’t officially developed until about 30 years after Lovecraft’s death
