  • this video was deleted after I learned that this device does in fact rebuild RAID arrays, it just does so incredibly slowly and does not communicate it well, therefore much of my testing in pulling drives out is not valid. but I have chosen to reupload it because it contains other useful information and also someone else was linking to it

    RAID 5 does not work like that. If you remove a drive and replace it, you need to wait for the drive to rebuild. Even in an Enterprise SAN or NAS, you can not pull a drive, put it back in, then pull another drive, your data is gone because you did not wait for the RAID 1,3,5,10 to rebuild.

      You are correct, and this video is outdated in that and some other regards. It turns out there is some weird Windows software someone else found that can communicate with the raid controller in this, and it is rebuilding, just very slowly. I have chosen to reupload it after discovering that someone else linked to it, and it still contains information i think is valuable in other aspects, such as the general operation and physical teardown. I would not personally reccomended using a parity RAID level in this thing anyway, just due to how poorly the LEDs seem to indicate what it's actually doing.

    So I got high while setting this up and I can confirm that the fourth switch opens up a portal to the seventh dimension, but it only works on Friday's at 8:52pm. You may also need to have a half-eaten bag of Doritos with you.

    Hi guys, I actually like this little unit. Does it actually offer Raid 3 or Raid 5 ?

    • @yetanothermichael3702
      @yetanothermichael3702  Год назад

      yes but I wouldn't recommend it for that. For one the manual is contradictory on whether it's raid 4 or 5, and for another it takes absolutely forever to rebuild with no way of knowing the progress without installing some obscure software that barely works. I would personally recommend sticking to raid 1 or 10, that way you can still use the thing while it rebuilds the array. Or just copy the data over somewhere else, swap in a new drive, create a brand new array, and put the data back, because that would probably be faster.

      It’s difficult to find it, they changed it for a version without the switches. The only one with switches is the 5 bay version.

      Given that RAID 5 (distributed parity) is supported, it seems likely that it supports RAID 4 (dedicated parity disk), rather than RAID3). Don't really see RAID 3 these days.

      @@eduardopadilla3799 The 4 drive unit with no switches is just a disk enclosure - no RAID. The 5 disk unit with switches seems to be the replacement for the product reviewed here.

      any 2.5" drive should work, just be smart about what RAID you use

    This thing looks awfully cheap - it doesn't look like it's worth the C$120+tax they're asking for it on Amazon.
