Andrew so great to see you back in a mk7 and the best there is. Whilst my Clubsport edition 40 looks identical from the outside my dream is the S, I but up to near £50k is outside my savings! Looking forward to your future content on this beauty. Congrats!
Thanks Gareth, Edition 40 is still a mega car especially in the right spec so for any sensible person it's not worth the extra for all the S shortcomings. However for once (well twice!) in my life, time to not be sensible :)
Not sure if the Clubsport S made it down under. Many limited models missed the boat. We had to wait two years for the Mk8 R. Which is still in short supply. Prices are eye watering. Our Government is also on an EV kick. But ordinary folks will not be able to change. Too much cash.
Interesting. Do you know if Japan got any CSS as there are 2 online and they are from the 100-250 number range which should be UK. I notice Japan got Clubsport Street and Clubsport track though which is pretty cool - I think track was 19s, buckets and possibly Cup 2 tyres

I don't want to post this in public for various reasons. This car was advertised for £36k and I gather it had been more before. All I can say is condition is beginning to vary a lot, and number of owners can be high and will limit the price rightly or wrongly. There actually aren't many for sale at the moment but speaking to specialists prices are on the rise as supply seems to have dried up. Whether it's good value for money or not is not for me to say but as an investment they seem pretty sound though don't under estimate storage costs and as fun car to actually use, bang for depreciation buck (as well as purchase buck) is hard to beat.
TCR is a better overall car and a better Golf (because really a Golf should have back seats) but for the ultimate Golf high with numerous compromises can't beat the CSS. The term "better" is subjective in many ways, better track car-CSS, better road car with odd track use-TCR. Didn't buy another TCR because I don't do loads of commuter miles any more. Also TCR prices have gone up more than CSS recently so TCR is not especially good value right now.
I also thought i'd seen and worked on a few of these clubsports etc etc. Turns out after actually seeing your one three of them were just sticker replicas...
Really Tom? There is the normal Clubsport which can be any Golf colour with normal seats and 18" wheels, looks quite different but must have the front bumper and that spoiler - much harder to copy those than sticker set :)
I'll check that out as Racingline's stage 2 kit offered some weight saving so stage 3 may do to. If not stage 2 will be fine. It's a good point, thanks as VW focussed on weight and not durability with the brakes on this car. If only they'd made the discs handed so the brakes are vented correctly on both sides.
During the mk7 Golf R development, Hans Stuck was telling the engineers the car needed better brakes but was overruled. These 340mm fade on track very easily. The Racingline kit will be lighter and much better. One thing they def got right on the mk8!

For me it's the night of the Clubsports. After watching your video I decided to go for a quick spin in my white Clubsport 45 only to end up behind a white Clubsport S. What are the chances!?!? 😀 Pity it was on suburban roads 😉

Congrats Andrew! I’m well jel as the kids say 😂 Not quite in the same league but I’ve just bought something of a hens tooth of a Mk7 Golf these days myself. A 20plate 2L Tdi 150 GT edition estate with only 8k miles and a 2yr warranty direct from VW. Ergonomic, family runaround perfection 👌🏻
@@volkswizard Thanks for the tip! I know where you're coming from, the dpf. I live pretty rural so it'll be getting plenty long runs and good a thrashing now and again 😁
I am spoilt, I agree but have very few other vices honest! I still like the Mk5 and I'm viewing Edition 30 next week, black 3 door manual. Don't tell the wife :)
Mk8 is just sooo nice to drive but not nicer than a 7 Clubsport S so I get all the fun and the buttons on the dash and no bugs - who cares about back seats!
It's good to see a great car used for what it was designed, even better is to see high Milage's low owner cars meticulously maintained and driven hard, I recommend you keep it for ever and put a million Miles on it. Oh and it should wear some frontal stone chips with pride, like the stigs 911 turbo.
Aah you lucky devil, I’ve always loved the look of the club sport s, I loved my mk7 gti which I had specced the mountune52 stage 1 and x3 induction kit and that was a flying machine , I wonder how similar that was to the club sport s … oh and I nearly pressed the button a couple of years ago but ended on the 7.5R . You have wetted my appetite for this beast and I’ll be glued to your first proper drive video coming soon i hope 🤞🏼
I had a Mk7 GTi PP in the metallic grey, and every day I regret selling that car - even though I’ve been in Rs since. It was just so much fun to drive.
They say time heals wounds, right? This purchase begs to differ. I always felt like that you were regretting the selling of your Clubsport S instantly. Congrats on this one. An absolutely amazing car.
Well spotted - I think time healing car sale wounds might have been true because better, faster cars were always being developed and built but now we are treading water and going backwards in many ways. Even new RS6 has been affected by poor throttle response in the name of emissions. And the we have all that electric car **** coming down the line all of which has been picking the scab on my wound if you get my drift :)
@@volkswizard Totally getting you mate. I also felt like the cupra was always there as compensation for your Clubsport S sale but eventually, you realized that it wasn't the real deal. Therefore it was no surprise to see the cupra going pretty much instantly after the Clubsport S purchase. Enjoy that Clubsport S, one of the raddest hot hatches you can have.
Thanks Marcus! Yes indeed, not really moved for 3 months but hopefully next month. It did a lot of miles in 2022 so deserves some time off. Was thinking 718 Cayman GT4 but when I realised I could have a CSS and keep the GTS, both of which are far more usable than GT4, I quickly went off it.
I always think GT3/4 owners who keep the mileage down by only using them on track then getting big bucks for them because they are low mileage are ones to watch on the used market as it's not really a low mileage car if it's all been done on track. Same is possibly true of a Clubsport S but owners generally seem to like the idea of it's track pedigree but never get close to using its full potential. PS4S switch is usually a good sign.
There was a whole load of footage of the car at the end of the video, did you see that? Anything that didn't feature the car itself was because this was a car collection video and I wanted to show viewers the dealership I bought it from.
I'm a hot hatch fan and had several over the years...this golf is arguably the pick of the bunch for driving satisfaction. It's also still a car you can have fun with on a public road, without going crazy. Great choice and will doubtless hold its value well...which makes it quite a sensible buy, really. Yes really.
@@volkswizard Yes, I’ll DM you on Instagram some information!! It’ll be great run in trip for the car and a great addition to the group going. A lot of cars from both the UK and Europe meeting.

I will probably take them off the car, grind off the rust and paint them. They are probably six years old - the actual contact area of pad to disc is fine so it's just cosmetic (but cosmetic matters of course!).
£35-£50k at the mo. Probably not a bad investment in the longer term. If I can use it properly and not lose loads of cash, that's what I call a good investment.
It's not for me to state the sale price but it was advertised at £15k - bucket seats, heated seats, CarPlay, metallic, 58k miles, FSH, new MOT and service, expensive Racingline front brakes and their R360 wheels.
@@volkswizard Thanks for info, i was looking for a Cupra, Gti or R, but i know your cars are a completely honest buy + you have a great passion for cars, let me know if another comes available, thanks again
Dynamically the Mk8 is significantly better than Mk7 but I can totally understand why this irrelavent to most people in the face of all the other issues
Congratulations Andrew! It's great to see this channel sticking to its humble, honest self. We're lucky to have you. I can't wait to see more of the Clubsport S!
A quick tip (pardon the pun): grab some Pink Stuff paste from a supermarket and use it to clean your exhaust tips. If the grime is particularly stubborn, get a little tin foil to agitate it. It works wonders. Double check somewhere hidden first just incase your tips are slightly different!
Thanks so much! This year it looks like GTIs will figure big on the channel for better or for worse. I'm not really inspired by new cars or their ridiculous RRPs and after being a car dealer for 20 years it's great to be combining the 2 passions and make videos on used GTIs which can still provide excellent value for money :)
What a great find! It's gone to a great home no doubt. Agree with your planned Mods too. I'm about to replace the tyres on my Mk8 GTI and will stick with the Goodyears as per standard fit. See you at Worthsee 23!
You were lucky to get those Tony! Glad you like them, genuinely blew me away, I thought it was the car until I swapped to Asymmetric 5 and it lost some of the magic 🪄
Thanks! It was easy to find as it had been on sale a while at a higher price and I know at least 2 people that viewed it (1 physically, 1 via video). I'm sure more will come out the woodwork and I hope some of the past owners do to. I always feel Scramble is more for old cars but it's nice to see some rare modern stuff there to so you never know!
@@volkswizard i did the turbo muffler delete whilst there...lovely induction sounds now...but that was the tricky bit and the elbow, but to a lesser degree. the R600 is as you say easy.
We missed out on the fancy spec'd GTI's in Canada but I'm having fun with my stage 2 Mk 7.5. It's really nice to see this car go to an appreciative owner and be used properly!
Had a Mk7 P/P great car. ( Sold for an S3 8v Sportback) I think also the MK7/7.5 Were the pinnacle of the Golf GTi family tree. The MK8 just doesn't hold the same attraction for me
Lovely example as clearly owned by an OAP with the wind deflectors and only 12k miles - with your collection becoming so iconoclastic it may be time for a Mrs Wizard TT upgrade?? A comfortable chase car for external footage - plus keeping up with your fleet and your lead foot may require more grunt 🤓👏😝🥳
Wind deflectors definitely aren't OAP material here in the UK. TT replacement has been decided upon but prices need to settle. How can it be right a normal GTI has gone up more percentage wise than a limited production Clubsport S? Patience is key as this will fix. She still loves the TT so no rush - a 4th GTI on drive might be a bit much (possible 3rd GTI incoming for me...)
Thanks Justin - mileage owners and modifications affect used price but currently £35k - £50k though not a lot for sale right now. Brand new they were £33995 and no discounts were allowed
Thanks, yes that's the plan! I'm really not too fussed about my use affecting its price as it gives so much and as long as I maintain it correctly it won't lose massive amounts anyway
Well done. Aside from a Type-R, that Clubsport is the only other front wheel drive car I'd ever want in my own garage. Sadly they never brought it to Australia. If you ever decide to sell it......:-)
Thanks Darren - can you import one right now? I'd be surprised if there isn't a RHD one in Aus already though they didn't seem to officially sell the S version in Japan so you'd be looking at UK or South African were they had very few. No plans to sell - can't let this one get away after the last one!
Really like the new toy Andrew. Might have to rethink the trip to Worthersee - the local council have cancelled it due to environmental impact. Have fun at the Nordschliefe though
Thanks Mark - yep that was bad timing, crazy! Plenty of other places to go to including 'ring of course. VW used to do a mini meet at Wolfsburg in September so maybe they will do that but then again it's no EVs so little chance :(
The Recaro seat backs do tilt but the bases don't slide forward at the same time. They even tilt when fitted in a 5 door Edition 40 which is a bit weird!
Why would anyone fit wind deflectors don’t these scratch the tints. They could of polished the pipes up and changed nut caps. Lovely car miss my mk7 gti
Congratulations Andrew, always useful to have a recommendation for a prestige garage, I love your new VW clubsport S, looking forward to the roadtest eventually.
Thanks David👍I wasn't expecting much from a big dealer based on main dealer experience but clearly size isn't the issue if run properly and not restricted by main dealer processes.
Very nice gti. It has the aluminum subframe and different steering knuckles for more negative camber on those S models. It's the best mk7 out of the box
@volkswizard I know it doesn't sound exotic when u say it like that but it's lighter and stiffer. And much better looking also. I have the regular on my Seat and it's getting a little bit rusty and that doesn't look very sexy

Not quite in the same league but I’ve just bought something of a hens tooth of a Mk7 Golf these days myself. A 20plate 2L Tdi 150 GT edition estate with only 8k miles and a 2yr warranty direct from VW.
Ergonomic, family runaround perfection 👌🏻
Sounds like a great car! Give it a good spanking when warm to clean it out, it’ll thank you for it 👍
@@volkswizard Thanks for the tip! I know where you're coming from, the dpf. I live pretty rural so it'll be getting plenty long runs and good a thrashing now and again 😁
Good buy. They could have cleaned the exhaust for you !
Well spotted, got to leave something. TBH I'd rather polish the tips than the paint :)
Spoilt !!!!!! Enjoy !!!! Mk7 gti always looked great. Quite like the mk5 now
I am spoilt, I agree but have very few other vices honest! I still like the Mk5 and I'm viewing Edition 30 next week, black 3 door manual. Don't tell the wife :)
@@volkswizard shocked how much the MK5 turned into the sweet heart of the GTis
Mk7.5 gti is all I need maybe a tune but the new stuff is not worth so much more dough sorry mk8
Thanks David, that is the (sort of) plan - forgot to mention it has a very high quality front end PPF but if I try really hard I can chip that :)
@@volkswizard Hi, I am considering selling my 2019 GTI Performance, 23k miles, how can I send you further details? have you an email address?
I've not long semi retired. What's the best vw to put around 30k into to guarantee being a future classic.
Tricky, a good standard 3dr manual Clubsport Edition 40 with bucket seats, DCC ideally, can’t go wrong
And it's gonna go up in value, is a tcr any more valuable
@@volkswizard or theres a lovely dragon green rado vr coming up for sale soon! 👍👍🤣🤣
Quelle surprise
I absolutely love my Golf Mk 7.
Thanks Brian👍👍
I had a Mk7 GTi PP in the metallic grey, and every day I regret selling that car - even though I’ve been in Rs since. It was just so much fun to drive.
Great car!
Great car 👍 Is the boxster still about?
Thanks Marcus! Yes indeed, not really moved for 3 months but hopefully next month. It did a lot of miles in 2022 so deserves some time off. Was thinking 718 Cayman GT4 but when I realised I could have a CSS and keep the GTS, both of which are far more usable than GT4, I quickly went off it.
Lightly Used ?? lol .... hopefully not thrashed .... very nice good luck
More car footage please, less of you on camera…the car should be the star..thx for the video.😁👍🏾👍
There was a whole load of footage of the car at the end of the video, did you see that? Anything that didn't feature the car itself was because this was a car collection video and I wanted to show viewers the dealership I bought it from.
NICE
I did laugh when you said you’d sold the thinking man’s Clubsport to buy a Clubsport… but I would have totally done the same 😂
I though I’d say it before someone else did 😆👍
I'm a hot hatch fan and had several over the years...this golf is arguably the pick of the bunch for driving satisfaction. It's also still a car you can have fun with on a public road, without going crazy.
Great choice and will doubtless hold its value well...which makes it quite a sensible buy, really.
Yes really.
Never been so excited for someone to buy a car!!!
June this year, the Edition 40 owners are planning a Ring trip, if you’re interested in this?
Thanks Josh, glad I’m not the only excited one 😵💫I may well be up for that, has a date been set? Thanks for the invite 👍
@@volkswizard Yes, I’ll DM you on Instagram some information!! It’ll be great run in trip for the car and a great addition to the group going. A lot of cars from both the UK and Europe meeting.
Awesome car . Never came to S Africa . What are you planning to do about those rusty brake discs
Did they not come officially then because at least 2 are in South Africa? Apparently you got 47 www.news24.com/life/heres-why-vws-ultra-exclusive-golf-gti-clubsport-s-is-sold-out-in-sa-20170113
I will probably take them off the car, grind off the rust and paint them. They are probably six years old - the actual contact area of pad to disc is fine so it's just cosmetic (but cosmetic matters of course!).
It’s the right car for you, never sell it!
Thanks - I hope I never have to sell it 🤞
How will I make my Edition 40 sound like a Clubsport S?
That’s a good question I’ve never worked out. I think most of it is the ECU map
What sort of money are these doing and is it a wise investment?
£35-£50k at the mo. Probably not a bad investment in the longer term. If I can use it properly and not lose loads of cash, that's what I call a good investment.
how much did you sell the cupra for?
It's not for me to state the sale price but it was advertised at £15k - bucket seats, heated seats, CarPlay, metallic, 58k miles, FSH, new MOT and service, expensive Racingline front brakes and their R360 wheels.
@@volkswizard Thanks for info, i was looking for a Cupra, Gti or R, but i know your cars are a completely honest buy + you have a great passion for cars, let me know if another comes available, thanks again
Wish you were still selling car, after a Golf R.
I miss it the deals but not much else!
Mk7 is peak. The Mk8 is embarrassingly bad.
Dynamically the Mk8 is significantly better than Mk7 but I can totally understand why this irrelavent to most people in the face of all the other issues
Stunning and a 3 door manual Gti as they should all be! Look forward to seeing what you do to this one Andrew!
All the CSS are 3 door manual ?
@@smiddysmidton8313I meant any gti
What the hell
great to hear you’re back in the seat of a Volkswagen again
Great choice
Cannot wait to see this video 🤛
Thanks so much 👊
Congratulations Andrew!
By the way, I drove the clubsport s from the UK to France, it was so stable on the highway, and plenty of power as well!
Thanks Frank, I'd love to V Max my car on the autobahn and feel that stability
Congratulations Andrew. Proper fleet of cars building up!! Looking forward to the content 👍
Thanks 👍
Fabulous car Andrew. Congratulations on finding one! Will I see it at the next Scramble?!!!
Great looking golf looking forward to your adventures 👍
Thanks Jay, 2023 could well be a good one🤞
I've got an edition 40 clubsport just having clubsport s disks fitted this week and a stage 1 map by jabbasport best company I've ever used
Jabba are cool, been around a very long time
looking forward to seeing the development on the car crazy prices now I see one for sale for 50k.
I can't believe i have never noticed they made a 3 door golf
Looks so gooood
👍
my 8V S3 has the R600 with the elbow and hose...a sod to fit!
Which bit is the sod? The elbow and hose or the R600 itself? I swapped the Cupra back to stock dead easy but just the R600
It's really nice to see this car go to an appreciative owner and be used properly!
this generation was the best GTI imo with the edition 40 but more specifically this hailed as king.
Had a Mk7 P/P great car. ( Sold for an S3 8v Sportback) I think also the MK7/7.5 Were the pinnacle of the Golf GTi family tree. The MK8 just doesn't hold the same attraction for me
Prob the nicest MK7 Golf I have seen... A very nice way to avoid the EV armageddon indeed.
Thanks man 🙌🏻
Lovely example as clearly owned by an OAP with the wind deflectors and only 12k miles - with your collection becoming so iconoclastic it may be time for a Mrs Wizard TT upgrade?? A comfortable chase car for external footage - plus keeping up with your fleet and your lead foot may require more grunt 🤓👏😝🥳
Wind deflectors definitely aren't OAP material here in the UK. TT replacement has been decided upon but prices need to settle. How can it be right a normal GTI has gone up more percentage wise than a limited production Clubsport S? Patience is key as this will fix. She still loves the TT so no rush - a 4th GTI on drive might be a bit much (possible 3rd GTI incoming for me...)
Mk8 is just a Toyota looking car with a VW badge. MK7/.5 is pretty much then end, unless they pull something else off.
Great video. How much do these cost used
Thanks Justin - mileage owners and modifications affect used price but currently £35k - £50k though not a lot for sale right now. Brand new they were £33995 and no discounts were allowed
It's great to hear that this time around, you will be able to use it for what it was meant for! Looking forward to the new content 👍🏻
That car is an absolute gem..
Thanks Daniel!
It's looking very good!
Thanks David, the paint is a bit too shiny as it won't stay like that for long from past experience!
@@volkswizard Ah ok either way it looks good now. I have a Golf Mk7.5 but looking at exchanging it for an GTE.
Super cool car! When you go to the Nurburgring see if Misha can do a few laps, he’ll probably set a new world record in it.
That's a great idea!
Can't wait for the mods
Thanks Charles
Really like the new toy Andrew. Might have to rethink the trip to Worthersee - the local council have cancelled it due to environmental impact. Have fun at the Nordschliefe though
Thanks Mark - yep that was bad timing, crazy! Plenty of other places to go to including 'ring of course. VW used to do a mini meet at Wolfsburg in September so maybe they will do that but then again it's no EVs so little chance :(
Love it 😍
Thank you! 😊
You can’t ignore the Clubsport S 👌. . what a legend, car’s alright too! 👍😎
😆👍
Great car enjoy driving abroad
Thanks 👍
That's enough potty talk for this video 😁 , that's a great car look forward to future videos
Thanks, me too!
How much do these go for?
Depends on mileage but £30k-£50k
@volkswizard thanks Andrew. QS sale not quite enough 🤣
A good mod would be retro fitting a rear seat, assuming you could even get in the back with those front seats. 😝
They polished the paint so can forgive the tips. The faded nut caps are on my to do list, cost peanuts. Price was very good so I am happy.
Congratulations Andrew, always useful to have a recommendation for a prestige garage, I love your new VW clubsport S, looking forward to the roadtest eventually.
Thanks David👍I wasn't expecting much from a big dealer based on main dealer experience but clearly size isn't the issue if run properly and not restricted by main dealer processes.
congratulation! I can't wait to see more content
Thank you - I'm hoping it will be a good source of content and a car I like - best of both
Very nice gti. It has the aluminum subframe and different steering knuckles for more negative camber on those S models. It's the best mk7 out of the box
Thanks! Yes loads of little tweaks but aluminium subframe was on every 8V A3 so not so rare / exotic
@volkswizard I know it doesn't sound exotic when u say it like that but it's lighter and stiffer. And much better looking also. I have the regular on my Seat and it's getting a little bit rusty and that doesn't look very sexy
The music goes well with the video beautiful showroom. Mk7 and mk7.5 will always be the best golfs
Thanks 👍
Keep them coming great vids 👍
Thanks, will do!👍
Welcome back!!!
Thanks, it's good to be back😎
Congratulations, I’m happy you finally got something you wanted.
Thanks John. I really want a Cayman GT4 but common sense says CSS makes more sense for me as I use cars and is 50% of price.
Many congrats on your Clubsport S! I can tell it is a car that means a lot to you and I've always been a huge admirer of one also. Happy miles ahead for you for sure 👍
Fabulous 👌. Beautiful car. Great vlog. 👍. Thank you. Well done 👏 ✔️
Nice score!
Great camerawork too 👏🏻
Thanks - I was lucky Mrs Volkswizard came with me to collect it and had a go at filming - it was so nice to do a showroom walkaround without having to hold the camera - glad you enjoyed it, I will pass on your praise to Kate 😎
