There are many interpretations of this Scottish folksong. Esther Ofarim's beautiful rendition of "Black Is the Colour of My True Love's Head" is among the best. This one has stuck with me ever since I first heard it in 1970/71. It was part of an early 1970s German TV "Krimi" called "11 Uhr 20", now available on DVD, but has never been issued separately on CD. Thanks for downloading this song and so making it available for a much wider audience. The film isn't bad either.
Thanks God we can enjoy listening to Esther's immaculaue enchanting angelic voice and to her beautiful interpretation of this song. I was a child when she first sang this yet I wish we could have more songs like this one nowadays.

I sung this song many years ago and I love this cover. I sang an arrangement by John Jacob Niles. I was studying classical music back then. Hearing this song cover think I will revisit this iconic song and create my own cover. Thank for sharing.

Esther Ofarim (Born June 13, 1941) is an Israeli singer. Esther Zaied was born in Safed to a Syrian Jewish family. She began performing as a child, singing Hebrew and international folk songs. In 1959, she met Abi Ofarim, a guitarist and dancer, whom she later married. Black is the colour of my true love's hair (Traditonal, Esther sings it in the criminal film "11 Uhr 20" in 1970, where she plays the woman Miriam)

Joan Baez's is,of course ,the traditional version of the song .I've owned the record since it was released in the 60's. And always loved the song. Esther's version is a totally different arrangement completely styled to the scene in the film,and is also quite wonderful The traditional version would be quite out place in that sophisticated nightclub setting Esther is fully capable of singing either style.Such is her versatility.Can't quite imagine Joan taking on this version though l.o.l.

I wanted to believe in her .. I really did. But, too theatrical. I really do like Gaelic Storm's version. Not a big time name at all. They just seem to sing this wonderful song more from the gut.
