  • Having all your drill press bits, accessories, and tooling right under the drill press table makes it easier to get work immediately and have a home for everything, making it easy and enjoyable to keep organized.

That space under our floor-model drill press has bugged me for years. The drill press is rarely used with the table in a low position, so wouldn’t it be great if there was a high-capacity cabinet under the drill press that straddled the roller base, and could be rolled out of the way when the drill press table did need to be lowered?
With that in mind, we incorporated a pullout metal storage shop organizer drawer set that my friend Steve gave me, along with a pair of drawers at the top and a thick laminated top to create another work surface in the shop (you can’t have too many!).
We constructed the drawers from 1/2" baltic birch plywood using our favorite drawer construction approach: the 1/4 - 1/4 - 1/4 method. A single setup on our table saw cuts all the joinery - including the groove for a 1/4" drawer bottom (or 1/2" drawer bottom with a 1/4" rabbet on the edges). You can check out how it's done here:

All of that was set on top of sturdy trestle legs to allow clearance over the Bora® mobile base. The base was on a nice set of 4” polymer locking casters.
That’s when I discovered I had goofed. I didn’t look closely under the table to see handles and casting under it. So, when I rolled the cabinet in, I had to raise the table on the drill press to get the clearance I needed, but now the table was too high, and the capacity of the drill press was compromised.
The only solution that would not mean significant modification to the project was to come up with a shorter caster solution.
So, we removed the original casters and put Rockler® workbench mobility casters at the front. To activate these casters, you step down on the plate, causing the casters to extend below the bottom edge of the trestle leg and lifting the cabinet up. To avoid tweaking the cabinet by lifting one caster at a time, we connected the two with a hardwood bar. Now, we can step on the bar in the middle and lift both front casters together.
Here is the link for the Rockler® casters:

We couldn’t use that solution for the back corners because there is no room to reach back and step on the plates. We found some great little side-mounted 75-pound (34 kg) capacity casters from Service Caster Corporation. They were about $11 each, easy to order and they arrived in a few days.
Here’s a link to that product:

We paired a set on each corner of the base, giving a load-carrying capacity of 150 lbs. (68 kg) on each corner. Their low profile lifts the cabinet slightly, and we made a pad for each front corner so that when the workbench casters were disengaged the cabinet sits level.
The only disadvantage to this setup is that the low-profile casters only allow travel forward and back, not side-to-side. Even so, it makes the cabinet mobile so we can move the unit out of the way when we need to lower the table on the drill press.
I still need to organize the drill bits and accessories and fill the bins below with various shop supplies and parts and create an index for them. But, I feel better already!
We’ve made a labeled storage tray for my set of Forstner bits and filmed an episode about our thought and construction process. You can view that episode here:

I had thought about a storage cabinet for my drill press accessories but couldn’t come up with a good plan. I like yours, think I use it.

What a fantastic idea! I've got stuff for the drill press scattered here and there.
    Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
