    This week's Christmas audio tool is the Gate. Or, Noise Gate. This is a dynamics processor that attenuates (or decreases, generally) an audio signal BELOW a given threshold. So basically, any audio you DO NOT want to hear, set the threshold above those signals and the gate will shut them off. Similar to how a gate in your yard keeps your neighbors out, an audio (or noise) gate keeps unwanted audio out.
    Now, this is different from noise removal because it acts on ALL frequencies in the signal. Effectively silencing your audio below the threshold you designate. So in this week's video I talk about all the parameters that go along with a Gate and how to use them well for video production audio. Merry Christmas!

    The best explanation I have seen.

    The gates are just a kind of compression. Think about it: threshold is a kind of high-loudness-filter. Gate is a kind of low-loudness-filter.

    I know this video is several years old but I just had to say thanks before I move on to the next one and forget. I seriously appreciate all of your videos, I'm a military videographer and everything I know about audio beyond "match loudness" I learned from this channel.

      @@OliverJHughes Currently working on an automotive tutorial. Run-and-gun shooting with a lav mic. Andy (the talent) talks throughout the video...during tasks, and between tasks. I used the gate on the dialogue, for testing purposes. When he wasn't talking, it got dead quiet. Pretty damn cool! Fast and easy to apply this effect, thanks to you and your detailed tutorial.
      I ended up removing the gate from that particular project, as it's not a good fit. Here's why. When Andy wasn't talking, he'd be turning ratchets, using air tools, walking a few steps here/there, and making other automotive repair related sounds. That "foley" adds to the viewing experience...and supports the story. It's just like you said at 2:40 in your video, about the interview subject..."I enjoy hearing the room."
      Please know, I do have big plans for the gate. I typically add voice-over for these auto videos, as well as a number of other projects. The gate will be perfect for that!! Shoot, maybe there will be some times that it will be useful during an interview. Nice to have options.
      Super stoked about adding this tool to the tool box. Thanks, so much, man!

    Oliver, I just want to give you a HUGE thank you!
    I've just started getting into video production and RUclips and I've been looking at tips from all sorts of people. My camera is pretty good and I've got quite good with editing, but I only really have the inbuilt mic on my camera and the mic on my earbuds. I can't quite justify spending on a better microphone just yet, but, now that I'm armed with the info in your videos, I'm confident I can work pretty well with what I've got.
    Your tips are giving me a bit more confidence, so thank you heaps!

    Is this what the de-noising tool does? Do you prefer de-noising or noise gates and why? I feel like you're probably going to say noise gates because you have more control whereas the de-noising is more automated? Curious because I'm still a beginner and figuring this all out. Plus, I know you made this in 2017 so I'm sorry to pull you back to old videos

    Oliver!! I just bought an zoom h5 e your videos are helping me to improve my audio quality. Thank you so much. Let me ask you one question. What would you use to get a better sound quality on acoustic recording( vocals and acoustic guitar)? Do you have some tips about it? I hear some h5 recordings here, on youtube, but i can get that good sound. Thanks for your attention!

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  6 лет назад +1

      Yo! That’s a pretty complicated question… I would start with the acoustic guitar and say the best way to record it is with a stereo mic setup. So, your H5 stereo XY mics will be perfect. Vocals, you definitely want a mono signal. So any large diaphragm condenser would be perfect. However, if all you have is the h5, I’d say use the stereo mics but make them mono in post. We all have to work with what we’ve got!!
