The Ranger Band Shelter And A Bug Hammock On The Ground

- When most build A frames for outdoor tarp camping and survival shelters, they secure the frames with paracord or maybe bankline. I was inspired by a recent podcast of Atlantic Bushcraft Adventures where Robert mentioned that Ranger Bands can do almost anything. This got me to thinking, will they hold a frame together? I give that a try here and also try an idea I saw on Bushcraft USA where a guy used a bug net hammock as a ground bivy sack. Lets see if these two ideas work!
gm Dave love your videos and your southern voice
GM Melissa and thanks you!
Hey! So awesome to see that we got the creative juices flowing on this one! Keep up the awesome work sir!
You sure did! You guys keep me thinking of cool stuff all the time! Thanks for stopping by brother
What a great Idea. I will have to play with this idea my self.
Its definitely worth testing! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Wow ! I liked this ! Great video ! 😄

Awesome video Dave. Loving that southern accent. 😎🤘🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💯💯💯
Thanks Jason, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Great video,, on a slightly different topic, I've recently bought a wallet made of recycled inner tube, it even has the size of the tube,,(bmx), on it,,lol, 🤣
the company do different items, but it's all in aid of charity,, they're called "the cycle of good",,
All the best from across the pond,, 👍
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Thats a wild wallet! I never knew they made them that way. Thanks for watching
I love that folding stove! Great shelter design, and the bug net hammock idea is wonderful. Better than having a separate bug net and ground cloth.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it all!
"...and that got the wheels to turning..." Yup! And thats why we watch you, Bushcraft Professor Dave! Always awesome, thank you! 👍😎🇨🇦🌿
You are very welcome Marian and I love doing this stuff!
More genius from Dave. Ever experimenting. You never seem to lose your boyish desire to play in the woods. Commendable - you'll never grow old Dave.
Perhaps some sort of ground mat insulation for comfort and resistance to conduction??
Thanks, I'm glad you like the way I think. The ground mat i used had a heavy mylar layer that prevents conduction
Hey Caught a show on time.finnaly. kek. you look a snugs a human in a bug net! great building idea Dave, looks like a success.
Oh man it was very comfortable! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Brother
I really appreciate the more improvised shelters the most. Have a couple set ups around the place. Want to incorporate some of these ideas. Thanks! Learn something every time.

Dave, I've been watching you for years. You think outside the box. I love it. You are quirky and thats great. Continue your path please, your ideas are inspiring and in my humble opinion, the way you think is the core of bushcraft
Thanks! Outside the box is the only want to get new ideas. Thanks for watching
You are the koolest camper alive, i always loved camping 🏕️🥾 and enjoyed it and now at 50 years old it's coming back again, a great set 📐 up and coffee at my favorite water fall at the river or mountain spot near water nothing beats it , thanks dave for bringing me back home 🏠
Thank you Travis! Man I think you're never too old for camping!
Hammock idea was pretty good,
Carrying ranger bands all the time,so many thing you can do with it,even as a simple tripod I used it for.

Never thought about using my hammock like that. That’s pretty cool Dave !!
I'm glad you liked the idea Glenn!
I'm going to ranger band the tent stakes. vertical and horizontal to keep them small compact as possible. Got me thinking about ranger bands again.
Always fun to watch your videos, Dave!

Dave is a great role model! A child watching today may become influenced in ways that encourage them to find new ways of doing things by thinking for themselves. Your ranger band shelter looked EASY to make and FUN to use. Jungle hammock is a great idea it would help in reducing the risk of tick bites as well as anything else that may be seeking your warm hospitality. . . THANKS, Dave. Love the shelter! Enjoy your weeks end!
I love the thought of that! Young people need to learn to be thinkers and dreamers of ideas. I'm glad you liked it and you have a great weekend too!
@@Reallybigmonkey1some of us old folks are inspired by you too. Never too old to learn.
I've heard seen the hammock bug net but this is a serious real world application always great to see your enginuity!!✌️💚✊️🔥
Thanks! It worked very well!
@Reallybigmonkey1 always about multifunctionality!! Cheers brotha
always coming out with original material and yes that table is slick.
I'm always thinking!
Being retired army..i used ranger bands for everything to include holding my tools while working on and engine...they last a long time and one innertube will make about 40 thick bands..a smaller Inner tube like the old schwinn bike tube makes great regular rubber bands that out last anything sold on the market...great instructional video Dave...
I agree! Ranger Bands are fantastic to have for pretty much anything. I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching brother
Man oh man do I ever know what you mean when you say the wheels start turning, when they get going I just take the wheel and hold on cause ideas like this ain't got no brakes. This is the first time I've seen a hammock run on the ground like that and the ranger band shelter frame is great. Thank you for sharing your ideas here Dave. They are always inspiring and I appreciate it!
We are a lot alike! Once an idea gets my wheels turning it's all I think about until I create it! I'm glad you liked this and thanks for watching my friend
I just plain dig it! Great vid again Dave. Now i gotta check out the other guys vids, never seen him before.

Another day outside and another adventure outside the box! 2 weeks after we agree Dave dont sleep on the ground we need to realize he will survive on the ground . Thx for the invite sir!
Lol, I avoid ground sleeping but I know how to if I have to! Thanks for watching Tyler
You have the insatiable curiosity of a teenager Dave. That is a great setup!
You know me well! Thanks for watching
That's a cool shelter..I also found a good buy at bargain bins wednesday...a box of d cell batteries for $3. 😊 I luv those Magellan shirts too. Watch out for those wandering Draculas😂
Thanks Sam, I'm glad you liked it. That's awesome you have a Bargain Bin! Lol, watch out for Dracula and thanks for watching
lol...yeah, i use those things everywhere. They fit certain uses as you cut them thinner and thicker. Been using them in the kitchen a lot to secure plastic bags after i roll them up with stuff inside. Probably one of the most useful for me has been securing the top of cordage i have wrapped around my knife sheath; rolls up quickly, and pops back over when i get the piece i want, without the hassle of re-tying the cordage back to keep it on the sheath. And securing my blowpipe to my neck knife. Have you ever needed a quick elastic band in the woods?... just keep a thick piece in your kit & slice off a thinner piece as needed. Endless list. If you need them tighter, just double them. They are tough, too.
Very cool uses you've mentioned!
lol...so far, one inner tube has lasted me about eight years; i'm down to the last two inches. :) @@Reallybigmonkey1
Great job and video 👍

This guy is the Da Vinci of bushcraft! (Edit) I forgot to mention how much I LOVE that machete!
Thank you! Its definitely a good machete!
I did enjoy this Dave. Thank you very much for the video. Ranger bands are great, so are zip ties. I always carry both.
Very cool to hear that and Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
What an awesome shelter loved it. 😁😄😄😃😄😄😁😁
Awesome video as always Dave! That was such a brilliant idea using the Ranger Bands to construct your shelter here. Much easier and quicker than using paracord, etc. Ya gotta love how these innovative ideas are sparked after hearing/seeing something on topic, yet different. And you're certainly the master of creative thinking my friend 👍 Hope you have a great weekend my Brother!
Thanks John and you're so right! Just listening to some talk about a subject can get the old wheels turning. Ranger Bands have been around forever but I never thought about using them for a shelter frame. Thanks for watching and you have a great weekend too!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 You're absolutely welcome my Brother! After watching this one it inspired me to dig out my Ranger Band supply so that I can try to give this shelter a go and see if I can pull it off (not with your impeccable style though of course, haha). The weekend was awesome by the way... thanks buddy!
@@IntenseAngler That's awesome to hear that brother!
Well Dave that is an Informative and interesting idea for bike tubes/ranger bands. I Don't think I Have Seen anyone else Use them that way! So now we know another Way to make a Frame for a tarp shelter 👍 the bands made me think of the thicker rubber bands that they use on broccoli stems at stores 🤔 for some reason. Good use of old blown bike tubes. Thanks Dave keep the Great Ideas🤔 coming ! 👍
Thanks Scott! I'm glad you liked it. I'm amazed I didn't already think about doing this but I'm glad I finally did! Thanks for watching brother
Love this setup Dave. I got Ranger Bands from Brigade Quartermaster or U.S. Cavalry decades ago but just used them to secure loose items to pack straps and such. Gonna have to make some now! I know multiple bug net equipped hammocks that are promoted as ground tents if trees aren’t available. I don’t have one but I do have a couple of Enos Double Nest hammocks and multiple surplus mosquito barrier nets as tested by you. They have enough material as you’ve demonstrated in the past to tuck under and keep you bug free on the ground. Love that camo pattern and wish I had that material. You can’t beat having a table when you camp. Going to find me one of those for sure! Keep those wheels turning Dave! Unfortunately we are overrun by black bears here in Southwest Alabama. They wander through our neighborhood almost daily so I’m unable to do some of the setups you use. They’ve never invaded any of my camps but we do have to allow for them. Still hoping to meet you and Nick someday! Stay safe and never stop those wheels!
Thanks Steve! I'm glad you liked it. Lol, man at one time every single piece of clothing my brother owned came from Brigade Quartermaster in Kennesaw Ga! I used to love that place. There's no telling what all Ranger Bands can be used for. I haven't seen bears here but they warn us they are around so I'm being cautious. Take care and thanks for watching brother
Light weight, quick, super strong fastening system. Awesome addition.
Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely! Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching Nate
Nice shelter idea, the more you know the better the outcomes. Thanks Dave for a great tutorial on shelter options. Stay safe, stay outdoors.
Thanks Roger! I'm glad you liked it and very well said!
You're so genius 😁
Thank you Linda!
Great watch as always. I have loads of innertubes that I use for different things....chainstay protection on the bike... using on the frame to protect paintwork when attaching accessories.... cutting some up for fire starting etc, but never thought of using them as bands, especially not shelter building! I shall cut some up and carry them in my kit from now on. I've never actually heard the term, ranger bands before... I must be the only one 😅. Many thanks again for a great video and excellent inovation. 👍
Thanks Spencer, Im glad you liked it. Im not sure how long the term Ranger Bands has been around but ever since I started RUclips Ive heard them called that. Thanks for watching
Hey Dave thats a great idea add a pad or mattress n its the Hilton 😂👏👏
Thanks Gary, I'm glad you liked it brother!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 Hwy Dave welcome brother 👍🏻👍🏻
The shelter is awesome. Good work. The little table for a dollar is unreal. I would love to run into a deal like that. To make the A-frame more stable, maybe make some stakes a foot and a half long or so first and and drive them down about 6 inches, and put a ranger band on each, then push the A-frame legs through the ranger band on the stake. The bugnet hammock is a fantastic addition. The entire set up looks awesome. Yea, that cammo pattern looks great. Your innovatioins always amaze.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it Wayne. Good thinking on staking it in place. This is definitely becoming my favorite camo pattern. Thanks for watching brother
Those bands look like a really great idea. It seems the strength could be adjusted by making some narrower to make them easier to attach for different applications. And maybe some from, say garden tractor size for super strong applications. Thanks for another great video!
Oh yes, I have some left so ill probably cut them into different widths to see how they work. Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Yes, I was thinking somewhat too, there are many sizes innertubes so a lot to think about 👍
Very cool the bands held up. I do really like that camo pattern. We just got our first hammocks this year. Nothing fancy. Now I need to find the ones with bug nets. I like the idea of being able to use it on the ground also.
That is slowly becoming my favorite camo pattern. To me a bug net is a must have for a summer time hammock. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching Matt
Great video awesome job. Your videos are incredible well thought out and original . You also communicate to your audience with almost like a Mr Rogers in the woods feel lol.. keep it goin Dave .
Thanks Walter! I'm glad you liked it and the way I do things. I've been called the Mr Roger of the woods and I love that!
Some great ideas as usual Dave, I’m going to cut some bands and add them to my kit, also the hammock as a bug net is a good thing for when the bugs are aplenty but the trees aren’t suitable and my camping permission is infested with ants 😮thanks for the ideas,
Thanks Peter, Im glad you liked it. Thanks for watching
Mt man here from the smokies good vid as always 👍👍
Thank you my friend!
That is a great camo pattern.
Oh yes, it's slowly becoming my favorite camo!
Great deal Dave. I use ranger bands and have them with my gear, but i don't believe I've ever heard or thought of building a shelter with them.
Ideas like this is what makes your vhannel one of the best. And why ive been a long time subscriber and I just hit the like button before i even watch the video.
This is just another case of you thinking outside of the "normal" box. Anything can and will happen. Best practice and prepare before needing it. Thats a good reason for having diverse and multiple use items.
Man I love ya'lls videos.
It's nice seeing you and Nick out together when he can make it.
God blesd ya'll and stay safe out there on your travels.
Thanks Brian! I'm glad you like the way I do things and I'm always thinking outside the box. I feel like everyone should be skilled in changing up the use for whatever gear you have on hand for a given situation. Thanks for comments and thanks for watching
Great Friday morning video Dave, and some more great ideas with the ranger bands and bug free sleeping environment, thats the most important thing when the bugs are looking for supper lol. Thanks for all the prep work you do too for making these videos,it will be cool weather soon so looking forward to some fall and winter ideas from the wizard of the woods lol, take care and see you on the next one.
Thanks Dennis and I'm glad you liked it! Brother cool weather is my absolute favorite time for making videos!

you just love inventing stuff 😎😎😎😎😎😎
hope nic and family are well.
get ready it's all about to go to the toilet good luck to you all brother
Oh I do love creating! Im prepared for it to all go downhill. Thanks for watching James
I love how your mind works on your creations. wife and I both watch. yes we're are as ready as thirty yrs of prepping and training can I guess. you watch your six there
I usually take about 20 to 24 inches of the tube and cut it in strips about 3/4 inch wide. Stretch and wrap the strip around your sleeping bag, a tarp or about anything, wrap one end under the other, like a single knot, and it will hold. Strips would hold those sticks in place, and I think, would be easier to work with for something like your doing here.
Always fun to watch you come up with new ideas.
That's a great idea Rick! I wonder if I could epoxy some Fas-Tex buckles to the ends of those strips?
@@Reallybigmonkey1 Maybe, but I don't know why you would. Just put the end(s) under the wrap before it and it will hold. Just wrap "whatever" tight with the strap, and tuck the ends under the strap. Holds like magic. Don't know what the breaking limit is, but they hold a tarp, sleeping bag, rag on the end of a water filter hose or bottle, wally world grocery bag on the top of a small trash can. Light or lantern, (not glass or breakable, just in case) in a tree or over a table.
The way you put your sticks together today, I would have wrapped over the beginning end a couple times, stuck my finger under a wrap or 2, then just tuck the other end under them where your finger was. Would have held tighter and done away with the pointy stick for twisting the ranger band. I use them a lot, for all kinds of stuff. If you tuck the end under like a bow, then it's quick release.
Great shelter! I have a Hennessy hammock that I've used on the ground a few times. I was camping in a forest that had been logged within the past couple years and could not find two trees that would support me. By tying my hammock to a couple baby trees just enough to keep the rain fly taut, I was able to get a good night's rest right there on the ground. I love the ranger band shelter idea and I'm gonna have to start carrying more of them in my kit!
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Thats very cool you used your hammock that way, thats thinking smart! Thanks for watching
I've thought about using zip ties instead of para cord. I've used zip ties for a lot of things. I definitely like the idea of using a hammock as a bug net, it definitely would be handy for tarp camping if you don't have trees to hang from. Have a great weekend, Dave. ✌️🇺🇸
Thanks, Im glad you liked it. Zip ties do work but I hate having to cut them off when done. Thanks for watching
@@dondiego124 I've never seen those
Really enjoyed this one and I can tell you did too! Glad to see you enjoying yourself in the woods! :)
Thanks, Im glad you liked it Andy. Oh I did have fun with this one! Thanks for watching
I like the idea of the bug hammock on the ground, because many of the state and national parks here won't allow hammock use. Doesn't matter if you have straps to protect the trees. Just a flat out rule. I cansee it because people ruin trees without thought and someone would have to inspect your setup. I don't like the ruling but I understand it. I also like the idea of the red light marking your tent if you step out for the old call of nature. I will have to try and find one. Thanks
I don't like the sound of that rule either but I totally understand because I know certain people ruin freedom fir the rest of us. I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching my friend!
i picked up similar folding tables a couple years ago and i freaking love em. it's so innocuous but having a flat place that you can put food or a chemical stove is convenient and as a man with glasses they're super convenient at night so i can set my glasses down on a place where chances are very low anyone (or anything) will accidentally step on them or roll over onto them.
I hear ya, its amazing what a good flat surface can do!
Morning Dave
Morning Hiram!
Very ingenius! Looks cozy.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!
Hey my friend I live in southern south east Georgia and I lived in Boone north Carolina for around a year and a half and I really loved it up there! Hey I like watching your adventures you remind me of my self and loving the great outdoors and nature.never know what you might see or experience!
Fantastic to hear that Kevin!
I hadn't heard of ranger bands. Obviously not military rock and roll groups.
Your experiment was a success. I never doubted it for a minute. That dollar table your brother found was a deal and a half. Where are these bargain bins you're always talking about? Nothing like that in Ohio, and the thrift store prices are getting outrageous. Stay safe out there!😊
Oh that table was definitely a great deal! Here's a link for the bin store locations in Ohio www.binstorefinder.com/bin-store-locations-in-ohio/
I was on a sailboat with my brothers and the wind died and the sun was glaring high noon. It was 101 degrees on the river. We fired up the outboard and built a shelter similar to yours using the sail boom. We were already dressed like you. So, we looked like Apocalypse Now sailing the Mekong Delta like Charlie Sheen and Larry Fishburne.
Very cool story! Thanks for sharing that and thanks for watching
Hi Dave ☺ pretty neet shelter, I'm not sure how it would stand up to a strong wind, ya could end up in a stick and tarp sandwich, lol. Was that a bushcraft black hanging round your neck, good knife, and the fold up table was a steal from the bargain bin, great score by your brother. I liked the hammock and bug net , using it on the ground is a great idea for keeping out the crawlers, and stuff. Thanks for another interesting video mate, we learn something every time, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.
Hello Stuart! The frame wobbles a little but after the tarp is staked down it becomes amazingly strong! Yes, that's a bushcraft black. I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching
I have a Burmese bolo 1941 that was used by the British soldiers in the jungles fighting against the Japanese during WW2 and it has the brothers names that made them in a very small cutlery shop and it has a arrow point design stamped in it and the words property of the king of England. I say this because you're knife looks very similar to my WW2 bolo knife and it has a canvas knife case and leather laminated handles and brass rivets holding the handle on and it is in really nice condition and the blade is almost a quarter inch thick. I very happy to be the owner of such a great bolo knife and a piece of history that has made a very long journey through war and survived and made its way to me to take care of. I call it my good luck bolo and if it could only speak and tell me some true stories of where all it's been and what all happened with the man that was issued to!
What a cool story! Thanks for sharing that
