I totally agree with Jon Freeman. This is great singing! Not 'still' great singing. There is simply nothing 'still' about it. Devia masters the elusive component of the virtuosic attacca on the note, simply the most important component of belcanto singing - no, of any good singing! The listener who can't hear that virtuosic detail (one needs these days to train ones ear to hear what in past generations would have been so much easier to hear) will never understand what makes great singing. He who hears that detail understands why European lyric music is so linked originally to the Italian language, and appreciates how that in turn helps explain why it is so much better to hear Italian singers in Italy, where the Italian orchestras and the best choruses also have at least a subconscious appreciation of the same 'attacca', since its origin is to be found in how the Italians speak their language! La Devia is perhaps the last great testimony to the finest singing traditional of all. Before its too late, the present young generation of singers, especially soprani, should study her art, before all other post-war soprani (though Lucia Popp was also another great exponent of this ultimate art). I believe Devia is actually 71, since when I heard Devia last in the flesh, her incredible Elisabetta in Florence two years ago, it was widely revealed then that she was 69. That she sings with such extraordinary completeness at the age of 71 is not the truly remarkable point: rather, it is that she sings with such extraordinary completeness! When it comes down to the ART of singing, I know of no other singer, alive, to match her and I have heard more than 2,000 live opera performances in every single major opera house in Western Europe and the States, over the past 40 years.
her singing is a dream. In my opinion there has never been a singer more complete then her... i never heard a bad sound come out from her. And with age she is getting this edge, more metal in her voice and sounding perfect in these roles. I feel warmed up to sing after i listen her Maria Stuarda, not kidding... I wish i can meet her to tell her how much her singing means to me....

Well Almaviva123 can you do better then? Mariella Devia IS Maria Stuarda... her performance is stunning!!! Maybe it gets a bit wobblier but her heights are still exceptional! Dear Mariella, you're still a phenomenon!!! To me you remain the reigning Donizetti Queen... I absolutely love your voice and your flawless technique!!! Thank you so very much for your amazing breathtaking interpretations!!!

bodiloto e meglio che le giovani soprani stiano zitte visto che ogni opera che fanno la voce ne risente dato che la loro tecnica e precaria. Di esempi ne abbiamo fin troppi.Meglio la Regina con la voce sicuramente sciupato ( o scusate ho solo.quasi settant'anni qui)comunque con tutta la sua tecnica mostruosa ancora intatta che quelle pseudo cantanti liriche che nello spinto sembra che qualcuno le stia stuprando. Ma per favore. Ma per cortesia. Oggi si sentono tutte soprani di coloratura o di agilita. Poi nel registro spinto calano mostruosamente . Per non parlare del registro acuto leggero che sembra che arrivi l'ambulanza dopo.lo stupro subito. Ed ometto di parlare del sostegno. Quello ce l'hanno sotto I tacchi delle scarpe . Ho finito. Scusate ma quando.mi toccano la Regina divento una belva.
