  • As aired once on A&E many years ago, here is Hearst film coverage of the funeral of Louis Armstrong. TV coverage only had the audio of this sad occasion, accompanied by stills.

I was ten years old, growing up in Holland when I was in the back seat of my deads car. Louis had died it came over the Blaupunkt car radio. dad was a big tall Dutchman who never showed emotion.
He cried. He loved Louis so much. The endless evenings listening to his records. Now here I am at fifty five. Both my boys love Louis. R.I.P. louis, God loves you!

I saw this documentary on Louis Armstrong as a child in elementary school during "Black History Month" back in the early 1980's. I became a strong admirer of Louis Armstrong and his music from that day forward.

Rest in peace Pops...Your music will live forever. One of the greatest Americans to ever live. Just read a newer book on him and its been about 10 years since I watched "Satchmo" or read the last book on him and he INSPIRED me all over again.

I was at the Blossom Center , just south of Cleveland ,oh. for a Ella Fitzgerald concert the day before Louie’s funeral. She sang about 4 songs, left the stage and didn’t come back out. Nobody left, just stood and kept applauding, she then came back on stage, shook hands with everyone in the audience, tears pouring out her eyes, then sang Louie songs for the next two hours! One of the most special nights of my life!

I grew up in overseas, we only had 2 movie theatres, no concert halls nothing else. We had a record player and remember hearing him very often on radio France International, and being a fan of this man and his music. I'm now 70 and keep listening to his music which has always brought great joy to me.

So glad this documentary still exist. Pops Armstrong was beloved by all ethnic groups. I believe blacks revered him for being the master musician he was and greatest trumpet player on earth. I believe whites loved him for his: when its sleepy time down south, approach to singing which brought them comfort. Nevertheless less he remained at the top in show business for decades. Didn’t even President Nixon attend funeral and was seen crying or was that my imagination?

Well, I was 8 yrs old when he passed and of course, I was too young to know him in the way *then* that I have come to know him *now* , through his incredible music and that giant "postage stamp" smile. Just saying his name gives me goosepimples because I've since learned and have assessed for myself, that he was a legend among legends in music. I really like his work with Lady Day aka Billie Holiday and was impressed to find out that she used to sing to his songs on the radio, before she got into the business of singing herself. ruclips.net/video/cIMuWLgLQwY/видео.html It makes me happy to know that he was able to become the BEST at what he set out, in life to do, in spite of the odds against him due to cultural events at that time. What a wonderful, impactful and kind man he was. We will all "slip to the other side of the veiled curtain" one day, but for me, I only hope that I can use his example of how a human, a man with rise up, in spite of it all. In closing, I want to say thank you, Mr. Armstrong, for doing your part to make this place, called Earth, a more Wonderful World. A much belated R.I.P. to Mr. SatchMo.
