  • I shall be talking about the only man to be awarded the VC twice during the First World War, his name was Noel Chavasse.
His first honour came at the Somme. His second, at Passchendaele, cost him his life.
An incredible man who left behind an incredible legacy of how far Medical Staff will go to help their patients.

What a hero. Medics and doctors are real heroes, especially back then when they didn't even carry a side arm for self-defense.
The sad thing is, in Liverpool, John Lennon, who left the city on the Beatles rise, is revered as a hero, but ask the vast majority of people and they'll never have heard of Noel Chavasse. As a Liverpudlian myself, it makes me sad.

There is no greater honour than the VC, but to receive two is amazing, only 3 men in history. It’s staggering considering how many where won in the ww1

A RAMC hero, one that should be held in higher regard. I wonder how many people who sit at Chavasse Park know who he was, or what he did for his country, his friends and his city

The flip side of this amazing story , is that there have been those who have had their VC's taken away, for one reason or another ( Has anyone ever had their Victoria Cross taken away?- Norris' History Corner )

It may interest you to know that Noel's brother was ordained priest, and also served on the battlefield, giving comfort and aid to the wounded while under enemy fire just like Noel. He was awarded the MC. He later went on like his father to become a Bishop, and while Bishop of Rochester in 1954, he confirmed your humble servant in the CofE. At the time I knew nothing of these deeds.

Christopher by his own right could have an episode! That's really interesting that you met him, if you don't mind my asking, what was he like?

@@afewminutesofhistory well, I was 13 at the time so he was so very important, I was blessed by him with the placing on of hands, and that is all I remember. I now know of course what a privilege it was. It is rare to find such greatness today.

It’s a shame that Ashcroft has his medal, and so many others, they should be with the families or the Corp museums. Not in the possession of a millionaire.

It annoys me that the exhibition in the IWM is called “The Lord Ashcroft Collection” they’re not his collection. They’re not his medals. He’s just lucky he can buy them from the real heroes unit museums who sadly need the money because of a lack of funding. If you aren’t a London museum or Bovington no one cares in power
