  • A big thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring this video and helping make these adventures possible aboard Penelope. If you’d like to open your own online shop or create a website go to Squarespace.com/wildweroam for 10% of your first purchase.
    We kicked off the winter build series with one of the worst projects you could do on a boat, fixing the holding tank and bathroom plumbing ; ) but as usual it turned out to be really fun and will make a world of difference aboard Penelope. There’s something special about making small improvements to tiny living spaces because you get to appreciate them every day thereafter. The original problem with our system was a terrible smell coming through some of the hoses and pumps, and of course a leaking Y valve which is something you never really want to happen. We won’t be able to test the system for leaks until we go back into the water, but it should be rock solid, fingers crossed!
    What's the worst home improvement problem you’ve ever done?
    Cheers,
    Lou

    So in looking at your project, it occured to me that for the maybe a little more or the same amount of money you could have purchased a composting toilet and would not have to deal this anymore. People really like their composting heads and there's no smell. Plus by getting rid of your marine toilet you could get rid of one or more through hull(s) and the the holding tank, thus giving you some extra storage space. More and more areas in the US are becoming NDZ ( no discharge zones) and you won't have to deal with pump outs anymore. Just a thought.

    Nice job! on your final wrap up I noticed that you only used one hose clamp on a lot of your connections you might want to add one so you have two at each joint. A holding tank Bio treatment to the system a few days before haul out and a couple of full flushes to the system will make the next job more pleasant. Keep up the good work.

    As someone mentioned below, you cannot pump out less than 3 miles off shore. When you put the boat in the water, the water cops will check the valve. If it is not locked closed, you will get a serious fine. Maryland is really strict with south bound boats and do a lot of "safety checks". You can use a keyed lock, a wire tie or just wire. I hate using 5200 on those joints. You will get a clog at some point. Use a heat gun to break down the 5200 to release it. I just double clamp, one in each direction. If I ever got another boat, I would go composting. I had a Wilcox Crittenden ( the M-Benz of heads). After a couple rebuilds I swore I would just get the cheapie Jabsco and throw it away when it needed a rebuild and get another.

    • @zoesdad961
      @zoesdad961 3 года назад

      Forgot to add- if you use a heat gun on that white tubing, be careful not to heat too much, it melts the clear plastic liner on the inside.

  • @briancostello

    Putting 5200 or 4000 on the hose barbs is done in some factory new boats. So while taking it apart later will be a pain. That “should” not be an issue for 5-10 years!
    Question, watching you hook up the macerator, looked like the hose from the tank to the pump was located on top? Of the holding tank?
    Is there a pipe inside the tank going down to the bottom? There better be or you will never get that tank empty with the macerator pump!
    X2 on the advise to fill with fresh water and pump out your holding tank to “flush” it. Works wonders.
    (Life long boater. Current boat is a 34’ Mainship. located in Boston (not to far away from you two)

    Just did this on the boat. Broke the head down and cleaned with hydrochloric acid, all new hoses (trident hose), new y valve just like you have. Hadn’t done it in 4 years and it was amazing how much calcium build up there was. Important is to really flush even when just do #1 so don’t leave any sewerage in the hoses. Also think as live aboard need to do more frequently. I plan on doing HCL acid every other month. Had the same hose you used and it was really great never had any smell at all.
    What was the white stuff you used when putting in the hoses?

  • @svbarryduckworth628
    @svbarryduckworth628 3 года назад

    We used that exact same hose. I felt it was the best available at that price point but there were other even more expensive options too. Wow!
    Just swapping the hoses behind the head made a MASSIVE difference with the odor in the head area. The outer layer of the old hose itself is like a big nasty scent candle off-gassing noxious odor even if the rest of the system is not leaking one drop. We are under a year on the new hose and the smell has not come back at all. I don't know about 10 years but I am fine with swapping it out every few years if necessary -warranty or not.
    Wr also have that exact y-valve and we did have problems with it leaking at the O-ring swivel points from new. There can not be any tension on the hoses pulling at either of the three connections or else that will cause the O-ring to not seal all the way around and it will leak yuck or smelly "air." We had one hose that was bending too quickly and was a bit of a jam fit so that caused our problem. After we re-routed the hose so it swooped around wider and went onto the Y-valve straighter the issue went completely away.
    Right now we are at Vero Beach marina on a mooring ball. They gave us a special numbered zip-tie to put into the lock of the Y-valve. The marina and the Florida Fish & Wildlife patrol work together. They can come to your boat and ask to look at the tag at any time to be sure it is still there and is the same one. This is becoming more and more common
    In most US inland waters the coast guard and local authorities expect the Y-valve to be locked-off at all times. Once out of the US or Europe things are a lot looser.

    • @WildWeRoam
      @WildWeRoam  3 года назад

      So interesting to read your comment, and so relieved to hear that you have good experiene with this hose! Also, we really appreciate the tip about that Y-Valve, that is incredibly useful to know. Thanks!! Wishing you all the best over at Vero Beach!! 😊

    ps - my "worst home improvement problem" just might be ahead of me. Here in Florida no-one has basements, apparently, AND plastic pipe is used for sewer lines. Ours is getting blocked by root infiltration so I need to dig a trench, clear out the roots, cut the pipe, install a new pipe, and close it all up. :-0 BUT it's all outside so nothing compared to what you guys did.

    Get some new plumbing, new holding tank etc. and you’ll be fine, until it starts again. Heater helps against condensation and mould ( another funk ) and new seals on windows and hatches keep the environment outside. Mostly. If you don’t like d.i.y. , run away 😂

    Hello toilet gangsters.....a couple of quick suggestions that might help you tame the toilet beast. First off, if you didn't use the head, you would avoid all these problems. Lol. Just kidding. Head management is a big deal. Having a significant leak or one exploding is almost as bad as losing an engine. There are a few pointers though that I want to share that may help you. #1.. the whole system always holds particulates and they accumulate over time. That's just the nature of the beast. Add to that some brackish or saltwater and you have an accumulation of pungent odor that, without change, will never go away. Some people say to put dish soap in the holding tank, etc. 🤔 I don't know. Sounds like a lot of something else to deal with. #2 the hose will get saturated overtime and hold the smell even after you wear yourself trying to clean the system. So -several things that have worked for us. Make sure your pump mechanism is always tip top. (the ol ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure) We dab ours with a dap of olive oil every 3 or 4 uses. Just a dab! Helps to keep the pump O ring slippery for discharge and little wear on the ring. Also helps to create a good pump seal. Make sure the tank vent is clear. If your joker valve is leaking, we wade up just a little toilet paper and give it a couple of pumps. The paper tends to block the joker valve slits enough to hinder back flow. You have to play with this a little to become a professional. Of course, replace the joker valve and flapper valve at first opportunity. Check all your fittings. Over time, the PVC gets stiff and jeopardizes a seal that use to be ok. I use a hair dryer and warm them up a bit before cranking on the clamp. Also, just like everywhere else, there should be two hose clamps. Another trick we do is wrap all lines with aluminized tape. The same stuff hvac people use. Spiral all lines. It is cheap and impenetrable. Works like a champ! Another suggestion is to use the old RV toilet treatment. That's actually good stuff, sweat smelling and not that expensive given the alternative. We also freshwater flush. Urine: clear the bowl and follow up with a cup of freshwater. Number 2: enough water to do your business. Clear the bowl and a couple of cups of freshwater. Don't forget your toilet paper trick. Before going to pump out , we pump in a quart or so of freshwater and let the tank slosh around before before we pump out. Obviously your ability to use freshwater depends on your tankage. In our case we're mostly on bottled water and do marine showers so we use very little out of the tank. Anyway, justina couple hacks to help you out. Good luck. Capt Kaz

    yep, they all stink but there is hope... too bad you didn't ask earlier... there is a bit of a trend to replace the boat head with a cassette toilet, still does the job and you can empty it at many locations including the sea (legally when you are more than 3 miles off shore) - glad to see that you replaced all the old hoses, the smell tends to permeate the rubber and then it stinks up the place... but marine heads are notorious for causing trouble, be sure to keep a comfy bucket on board for an emergency. if you can, flush with fresh water, the sea water is full of living organisms and they cause odors... here's a book that may help with your problem www.amazon.com/Get-Boat-Odors-Peggie-Hall/dp/1892399156 and there is a better book that I purchased a few years ago but cant find to get the title and recommend. BTW, electric pumps for black water are great but they are also notorious for failing, be sure you have a backup pump or a rebuilt kit. same for the commode, be sure to carry with you all the parts to rebuild it and especially a joker valve. one last thought, buy a sailing dinghy - they are an awesome way to get around plus all of the skills you learn on your sailing dinghy will apply on your new boat.

    Don’t forget to replace the intake water hose from the overboard seacock that supplies sea water to the toilet. Also make sure that you replace the hose for the deck mounted pump out very important as that hose also supplies a lot of the odors that you’ll find.

    Nice work on the plumbing for the head. I hope it clears the air on the boat.

    I recommend you do double clamps on every part of the tube, not just one a few. Worth the investment for sure. Good job so far!

    Any hose connection below the waterline connected to sea at any time should be double hose clamped , with the Barrels on different sides of the hose not on the same side next to each other..

    ... was that 5200 that you put on the hoses to seal them? Giggling just a little even if it’s 4000... it’ll be an interesting video where you need to take it apart to clear a clog.

    Hi Dana and Lou,
    As I was doing my afternoon walk and collecting vitamin D from the outside there was not a better company but to watch your new video!
    Wow you two, well done 🌷🌷🌷look at how much progress you have made for those two days on Penelope yaay!!!I am genuinely happy for you two! It looks and I am sure smells much better.
    We are having a similar toilet project that I am not looking forward to but needs to be done, so good that you showed what masks you have on. Stan was debating should we get a similar one, definitely doing it ha ha.
    Whats the next project? We hope that it goes smooth as this one!
    Sending sun and smiles from windy Oklahoma!

    • @111-c5c

      I am not a meat eater, but I find
      meat eaters in Switzerland do
      not smell. Maybe because our
      is very clean and fresh and people
      shower daily. Also luckily we do not
      live in one of those hot countries.
      Perhaps that makes people smell
      worse. Wish I knew the answer to
      that. But it also depends on one's
      body metabolism.

    To remove the smell you can buy one OZONE cleaner, it works great is cheap and is simple to use.
    Before use read the manual, you CAN'T BE in the same space as the OZONE cleaner (the same for pets / living things)
