Thanks for sharing. UI + user experience (LN) still too complex for the average user as we look to onboard the next wave. They just want it "to work". But great advancements in the space!
I think I probably do a disservice to the user who is newer to Lightning by going into all the gory detail here :) Of course this is directed at my audience who tends to appreciate the "how" behind these different tools and tends to be slightly further up the learning curve. For e.g. maybe I could have just showed how to download the app, click Receive, receive your first payment non-custodially, send a payment, without going into any of the detail - I think the reaction would at least be closer to "oh wow that actually does 'just work'"
It seems like this is bitcoin's answer to sending faster payments for cheaper but the setup/swap fee seems pretty high. What is great about this wallet is that it will specify the fee needed to receive the payment on the LN.
That’s exactly right. For context, when you receive your first payment here (or when needing to replenish your ability to receive payments in), Phoenix will either open or increase the size of a payment channel with you which necessitates an on-chain trxn. So that’s why the fees are high as fees have been high recently.
See my other response for additional context. What’s happening here is that a lightning channel is being opened with you which requires an on-chain trxn. So yes the reality is that Lightning (particularly self-custodial) can be more expensive when (1) on-chain fees are high and (2) you need to open / resize channels which Phoenix is doing for you in the background
I had high expectations for splicing, but high fees defeat the purpose of the lightning network being cheap. I expected it to be better than the Muun wallet with which I was already satisfied, but I am very disappointed with the Phoenix wallet.
I agree that the initial sentiment around splicing seemed overhyped relative to what it's actually doing here. With that said, I do still think it solves some problems and there could also be some interesting future applications that take advantage of splicing such as what's outlined here: x.com/ohskogstrom/status/1680185457307447299?s=20 We'll have to see..
I did a tutorial on Zeus but it ended up being just before they rolled out the ability to use it w/o connecting it to a standalone node! Definitely on my list to come back to though
Sorry, but I don' t get it. And I am even not willing to understand this abstract concepts. And I am a kind of experienced user. But what about all the normal people? This lightning stuff it's just disappointing and will never get broad adoption unless the devs lock them in their office for 2 years and come out with something self-custody, safe and simple. As I mentioned to another comment, this video is probably not what I would put in front of a new user / normie :) I purposefully go into the detail of how it all works because I find my audience typically appreciates that and is also typically a bit further up the learning curve than the avg. newer user. For e.g. if I had just shown downloading the app, clicking Receive, receiving a payment, sending a payment all without going into any of the extra detail on how it works, I suspect it would be a pretty accessible experience to a lot of folks. Did you try it out yourself? I'd be curious what you think.
What is it with all the choppiness in the youtube videos lately? Unwatchable for me. Is this some sort of attention technique? Please return to normal video if possible.
Typically to edit out things like pauses - maybe sometimes I cut them too close. I do all my own editing and oftentimes have limited time to do so, so the focus has unfortunately always been content over editing / thumbnails / things like that. Surprised it’s that bad though - you’re the very first person to comment this (but thank you for the feedback)

I agree, Phoenix is amazing but the fees aren't a cheap as we were lead to believe would be for lightning.
