About your mom's comment: Many creative people like Tyler, only create their best art when in those dark depression places. When they are not in those times, there is no need or desire to create. And by the creation of the art... it often brings them out of the depression. So it's a viscous cycle. The desire to create but also knowing to do the best creation one has to put themselves in a place that is harmful but also cathartic. Hence the metaphor of chlorine: it is both useful as a cleansing agent, it cleans and purifies, but in large amounts can and will kill you.

I can understand the parallel. My objection is to purposely welcome depression in order to create! I agree that engaging in creative endeavors can help depression but once achieved, do not “welcome” it for the sake of creativity !

I think Tyler’s made it past a lot of his really bad depressing stuff but he still sings for the kids out there who he knows are still struggling with it.

The majority of Tyler’s music comes from the heart and from his own perspective. His struggles with Depression, Anxiety, and other things is where he draws his creativity from musically. A lot of their songs are about dealing with personal demons and overcoming suicidal thoughts (similar to Linkin Park).

My interpretation, Ned personifies his fans. Chlorine is both cleansing and toxic, as is Tyler's writing process. He needs to write songs to keep the fans happy, which in turn makes him happy, but in order to write songs he has to dip into the deep, dark places in his mind. Both cleansing and toxic.

Ned is now the guitarist of the band.
    Before it was
    Josh: drums
    Tyler: vocals, piano, ukelele, bass
This is where Tyler's creativity came into play. As Tyler learned to play the guitar, he now uses Ned as a member of the band.
You can see him in the live presentation of Level Of Concern that came out just a couple of weeks ago on Jimmy Fallon, which you should definitely check out.

Tyler was depressed and had anxiety when he was young, so he started to make music about it. Basically he saved his own life and apparently a lot of the fans lives too. He was in pain and in darkness and suffered and he created something beautiful from it. (also his career). There's a video on YT where a guy shouts to Tyler that he saved his life. And Tyler tells him to come on stage.

This song is about his relationship with having to create music. He needs it in doses (like a pool) but too much can be toxic to his mental health.

The "alien" creature's name is Ned, and he represents Tyler's creativity. The song is, in a way, about a toxic relationship, but it's a relationship with his art rather than with a person. Chlorine is used in small amounts to clarify and purify things, just as his writing can help clear his mind and purify his thoughts through catharsis. But too much chlorine is toxic, just like being forced to write and write and never stop can be destructive. In the video, they're trying to get Ned into the chlorine, to purify the creativity, and when they finally do, the horns grow because he's been allowed to flourish. The one line that really makes the message clear: "My body lives on lead...but lead is terrible in flavor. I know it doubles as a paper-maker." Lead being a synecdoche for pencils and writing. He makes his living and his money through his writing, but it can be toxic/repulsive to him at times.

At the end when he says sorry he’s forgotten you and let me catch you up to speed. I think he’s referring to the fans bc they took a big break and spent a long, trying time creating Trench. The fans waited so anxiously to hear more from Tyler. He said he’s been tested like a weathered flag by the sea....meaning he put everything he possibly could into creating the new album. He’s clearly a perfectionist who can’t quit til it’s perfect.
Earlier when he says it doubles as a paper maker....he’s saying it’s the thing that makes him money and there’s a lot of pressure on him to create. He loves it for it’s therapeutic results but it also wears him out.
    I give it an A+
