Pierre Charles L'Enfant did not architect DC so we are not carrying that narrative any longer.
L’Enfant was a loose canon and a disaster to work with. It’s easy research if you’re interested. Not only was he hostile and acted like a spoiled brat who couldn’t get his way, but the Frenchman tore down the house of the nephew of one of the commissioners who George Washington hired to oversee the project. That was the last straw. Washington in turn fired him and ordered the nephew’s house to be rebuilt to the same level it was before L’Enfant destroyed it. L’Enfant was dismissed and he took his blueprints with him. His career immediately went into the tank and he lived the rest of his life in disgrace in Prince George’s County. It’s a joke that his name comes up as the Designer of DC. Banneker saved the project, memorized L’Enfants design for all of its flaws and saw the project through to the end.

Sorry but that’s not all. Pierre was fired because he wanted Washington DC to look like Paris. Large Blvs and Avenues. Washington disagreed with him. They use to go and meet under the K st bridge in the evening to discuss things. Back then they would use lanterns to light the dark Inn. They would have pints of beer while looking over the plans. After Pierre was fired they hired Banneker. Banneker took the plans and completed the city. There was one problem. The circles. Why sooo many circles. Oh well. He proceeded. Do you know why DC have random circles all over the place

You don’t know your history. Pierre was fired because he wasn’t paid. He went back to France. Died broke. Later his body was brought to the United States. He’s buried in Arlington Cemetery. He called Washington DC the city of DREAMS. Now he’s buried in Arlington in a dream like state over looking the city he called the city of dreams. This is why MLK speech was called I have a dream

Benjamin Banneker also was known for making that Clock out of WOOD! He wrote a Farmer's Almanac each month that was widely circulated, and a great accomplishment for an African-American man at that time in history. It is believed that he inspired Benjamin Franklin's Almanac to be written as well.

Since then, my cousin did a genealogy of our family and passed on literature and books for us to share with our descendants. I knew that Benjamin Banneker created the almanac, but never did I knew we were related. It made me proud to share with my children and my husband. 💜💜

Do you actually think Black Americans don't know their own history? It is you who don't know it. There would be no America had our ancestors not built it. There would be no access for anyone who has immigrated here had our people not fought for it and now because of our fight the same people work against us to lock us out. Black Americans know our history very well it is you who don't know. All the BUILDINGS in the cities in the SOUTH, NORTH and EAST COAST built in the antebellum period were built by Black Americans. All construction prior to the 1980's were done by Black Americans hands. Why do you think unfettered illegal Immigration was allowed and has been being dumped in Black Americans communities in the early 1900's, the 1950's and 60's, the 1980's until now! So when you say it's "remarkable", remarkable for who, those who are so filled with stereotypes they were raised with who just can't believe Black Americans been here and built this country? SMH
As stated by the National Black Chamber of Commerce, one of the richest legacies of African decedents has been construction. From building the pyramids of Egypt to building cities like New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC, many African Americans were involved in construction during times of slavery.

Benjamin Banneker is unsung hero and icon, the first time I heard about him I was six in the first grade. In a predominately white classroom, I felt connected to him but I quickly held my excitement. This was due to the reactions of some of the other classmates so pride turned right back into self shame. However, in growing and understanding my ancestry from that time on I truly understood what was hidden. There is comic book series from DC called ICON vs HARDWARE and in it one of them traces their lineage back to Benjamin Banneker. The discovered that he built a time machine preserved still working right under Washington, DC. Although it is historical fiction it makes one wonder, what else could he have done that is hidden.

Written in the beginning was never a part of our culture according to people of color. We had a oral tradition of passing down our history to the next generation. The creator spoke our people through visions and dreams. And of course through our conscience. Written was taught when the watchers taught corruption to mankind. According to the book of Enoch. And guess what the creator still deals with us in the same way.

“The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house.”
    ~ Audre Lorde
“Powerful people cannot afford to educate the people that they oppress, because once you are truly educated, you will not ask for power. You will take it.”
    ~ Dr. John Henrik Clarke
"The paradox of education is that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated."

The anniversary of Benjamin Banneker's death was yesterday (10 / 25 / 23). It's amazing to me that schools don't talk about him when it comes to the additional building and development of Washington D.C. as we know it. Generally, Benjamin should be mentioned within the walls of the White House (since he was praised by two founding Presidents) and his portrait displayed so that folks can learn about him and his many endeavors.

Like Anne Lowe, who designed Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress, whose design was hailed, but her name never even mentioned until recently.
There are a plethora of other examples: Easy Rider motorcycle design, Jack Daniel's recipe, the true inventor of the Paraglider, Toussaint L'Ouveture, who defeated Napoleon's best 1,000 troops making it possible for Thomas Jefferson to make the Louisiana Purchase, which literally changed the shape of the country, Chevalier de St George on par with Mozart and the list goes on indefinitely

@@yubantwo2086 Exactly! There are so many heros that never get mentioned or given accountability for things they do. And it's sad. Historians even say that there's two sides of one story...it's time we start looking at the other side now.

@TheLeslieMichelle Start with Mansa Musa, who was the wealthiest man ever to walk this earth. What is remarkable (a new word is sorely needed) is how Europeans and the British stole, pillaged, taking other's achievements as their own while convincing the people they ripped off that they were worthless. Whenever a revelation is uncovered, they try to demean, belittle or down right refuse to believe the facts bc they have been buried and in some cases destroyed save for the efforts of those who could safeguard our legacy.

Benjamin Banneker's prominent reputation stems from his service as a surveyor on the six-man team that helped design the blueprints for Washington, D.C. President George Washington had appointed Banneker, making him the first Black presidential appointee in the United States. Banneker also made astronomical calculations that enabled him to forecast a solar eclipse. Washington, D.C. is a city-state like London, England, and Vatican City, noted on its flag with three bars and three stars, each sitting atop a hill.
Freemasonic-Egyptian influence is visible in the layout and design of many federal buildings in D.C. and the Federal Mall, including the Capitol and the Washington Monument. Washington, D.C., is modeled after ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece. Alexandria, Virginia, is home to George Washinton's hometown, the largest slave trading firm in the U.S., a large free black community, and one of the ten busiest ports in America.
As a Washingtonian, I believe D.C. is one of the most beautiful cities in our nation and easy to navigate due to Banneker's scientific contribution and genius.

In 1791, French engineer Pierre L'Enfant was appointed to design the city of Washington by President George Washington. Banneker was an ASSISTANT surveyor on a 6 man team mapping out the city.

I'm a fan of Benjamin Banneker but I have to correct the hyperbole is this video. Crediting Banneker as the "architect" of Washington, D.C. goes too far in downplaying the significant contributions of Pierre Charles L'Enfant and Andrew Ellicott, who were the primary figures responsible for the city's design and execution. Banneker's contributions were noteworthy and valuable, but they were part of a team effort in the city's planning and surveying, and he did not hold the role of the city's chief architect.

Does the Big Ben clock in London UK, have any connection to him? Nothing comes up online...

    • @SuperLuminalElf
      @SuperLuminalElf 10 месяцев назад

      No; no connection.
      Here’s some trackable information:
Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, but it is often extended to refer also to the clock and the clock tower. The official name of the tower in which Big Ben is located was originally the Clock Tower, but it was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.
The clock tower was designed by Augustus Pugin and was part of Charles Barry's design for the new Palace of Westminster after the old palace was destroyed by fire in 1834. The construction was completed in 1859.
The name "Big Ben" is thought to have been derived from Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw the installation of the Great Bell. He was known for his large size, and his name is inscribed on the bell; hence, the bell itself and eventually the whole clock tower became affectionately known as "Big Ben."
