  • Hi friends! Join me as I paint this Dartmoor landscape (that I LOVE!) and chat about the reasons why I don't think I'll be doing any/many art markets going forward. I also have lots of thoughts about my artistic business and practices in general so grab a tasty drink, maybe a snack, and let's sit and make art together while chatting about it!

Rebecca, I recently found your channel through one of your informative videos and I really appreciate the care you put into them. They are packed with useful tips, and I enjoy seeing your process. You speak confidently and genuinely, without the exaggerated claims that are so common in "how I make a living" videos. But discovering your personal side has been a pleasure as well! So I would say keep doing both types of videos as long as you are comfortable with it. Your community-building efforts are worth it, in my opinion. Isabelle

I just started my art business this February and didn't even know just how many art markets and markets there are out there. I know exactly what you mean, and I have just been doing this for a few months. There are so many events that charge way too much for the amount of people they bring in. There are only a few times that once does the cost of the booth back and just a very small profit which is even smaller once you take into account the cost of supplies and time. Even conventions that charge on the lower average still charge way too much for seeing no profit at the end of the day. I am already thinking of taking a slower pace with these markets and maybe eventually stop and I just started. There are more and more people doing markets but not enough advertising to support the charge of tables.

Thanks for watching & for your comment! Yup, it's totally a different world with markets nowadays. For a while I thought maybe it was just my region but I'm hearing these stories from people all over the place. It's hard to discern between markets that succeed by luck & those that succeed from good organization and advertising. I don't blame anyone for getting fed up with the ups and downs of it all 😥 I hope you find another outlet for sharing your work!!

I love all your content, and appreciate how much you put into your tutorials 😊.
I watched something recently that said when you’re starting out you need to be the “sidekick” (the viewer get to be the main character) and offer more content that offers the viewer something (you-based content), and you sprinkle in your you-ness 😂and shift into a more “main character” (me-based content) where your viewers just watch everything because they feel more like your friend/fan (I guess).
I don’t know if that makes any sense (it’s hard writing a short summary 😂) It all seems to be a balancing act. Just keep posting 🤗

I love the painting. I live not far from Dartmoor!
I started watching your channel because of a display stand tutorial, as I had started doing art markets. Just yesterday, I decided to not do them anymore, or maybe one or two a year…very little profit for a lot of hard work and often heartbreak!
I’d love to watch you paint more. Maybe if you are just doing what you authentically love, the viewers will turn up. I’m off to take my own advice now!😊

Thank you so much for the lovely comment! I studied abroad in Plymouth many years ago so I got to visit Dartmoor then, and it has always stayed with me 🌸 lucky you being so close! I will definitely work on some more painting videos as they are fun for me to make. I feel for you about the markets, and hope you find another outlet for sharing your work with the world - that's one of the hardest parts to let go of from markets, in my experience!
