Hi friends! Join me as I paint this Dartmoor landscape (that I LOVE!) and chat about the reasons why I don't think I'll be doing any/many art markets going forward. I also have lots of thoughts about my artistic business and practices in general so grab a tasty drink, maybe a snack, and let's sit and make art together while chatting about it!

It's summer here in Nova Scotia and I took a little trip to Peggy's Cove to take some footage of the sunset! How does one cost a notepad because it obviously depends on how much ink or how much colour you have on your design, but what is the general rule how do you work out how much a ink cartridge gives you

    I sat down and looked at this for example did a 5.5 by 8.5 tear off notpad of 30 pages and I came up with $27 to price my item and I am at a loss as that seems way out there for a tennessan so any advice or suggestions would be amazing (I usually do 1-2 hours just design in begining as I am new to creating them, and min wage is 7.25 but i upped to $8 since I been drawing since birth and all my designs will be drawn)... my materials is $6.02 roughly due to me using epson inkjet just for start until I can get better it does 312 pages per refil. It came out to like $27 with following the steps... But I have no idea where a comprable item would be? Send help! lol - Kimi

    Rebecca, I am just seeing your video. I print greeting cards also. I searched for a long time for quality paper that would make my cards look store bought. Red River paper is FANTASTIC! They ship international. You can buy in bulk from them. Once I discovered them, that is my go-to for paper. They sell different sizes and the 1-sided gloss along with the matte (which isn't bad either). Also, laser paper is different from ink jet paper. Some paper you can use on both, but it must specify that on the package , otherwise, you will get the bleed. When you are look I ng for supplies for your cards, if you type in your search bar "greeting card" paper or "greeting card" sleeves, it will pop up more suppliers for you. Hope this helps.

    I love all your content, and appreciate how much you put into your tutorials 😊. I watched something recently that said when you’re starting out you need to be the “sidekick” (the viewer get to be the main character) and offer more content that offers the viewer something (you-based content), and you sprinkle in your you-ness 😂and shift into a more “main character” (me-based content) where your viewers just watch everything because they feel more like your friend/fan (I guess). I don’t know if that makes any sense (it’s hard writing a short summary 😂) It all seems to be a balancing act. Just keep posting 🤗

    • @luckysprout
      @luckysprout 10 дней назад

      If you were going to add in bleed, you could either use the Bleed feature in Canva (I don't usually use this so not 100% sure how it sets things up) or export your design as a PNG then create a new Canva design with the bleed added and import that original image to it. I hope that's helpful!

    I love the painting. I live not far from Dartmoor! I started watching your channel because of a display stand tutorial, as I had started doing art markets. Just yesterday, I decided to not do them anymore, or maybe one or two a year…very little profit for a lot of hard work and often heartbreak! I’d love to watch you paint more. Maybe if you are just doing what you authentically love, the viewers will turn up. I’m off to take my own advice now!😊

I will definitely work on some more painting videos as they are fun for me to make. I feel for you about the markets, and hope you find another outlet for sharing your work with the world - that's one of the hardest parts to let go of from markets, in my experience!

  • @WeblightDreams
    @WeblightDreams 19 дней назад

    I just started my art business this February and didn't even know just how many art markets and markets there are out there. I know exactly what you mean, and I have just been doing this for a few months. There are so many events that charge way too much for the amount of people they bring in. There are only a few times that once does the cost of the booth back and just a very small profit which is even smaller once you take into account the cost of supplies and time. Even conventions that charge on the lower average still charge way too much for seeing no profit at the end of the day. I am already thinking of taking a slower pace with these markets and maybe eventually stop and I just started. There are more and more people doing markets but not enough advertising to support the charge of tables.

    • @luckysprout
      @luckysprout 10 дней назад

      Thanks for watching & for your comment! Yup, it's totally a different world with markets nowadays. For a while I thought maybe it was just my region but I'm hearing these stories from people all over the place. It's hard to discern between markets that succeed by luck & those that succeed from good organization and advertising. I don't blame anyone for getting fed up with the ups and downs of it all 😥 I hope you find another outlet for sharing your work!!

    I use a very reasonably priced 100 lb cardstock from Amazon called Accent Opaque White Cardstock Paper, 100lb, 271gsm - 200 Sheets (1 Ream) - Premium Smooth Heavy Cardstock. I also use Hammermill Cardstock, Premium Color Copy, 100 lb, 8.5 x 11 - 1 Pack (250 Sheets) . I like both but Accent is my go to and less expense. FYI: I have a HP 9025e and setup the printer with custom size 5.5 x 8.75 in order to correctly print an A2 card. The extra quarter inch is to allow for grip loss of carrying it through the printer. It works for me!

    Regarding inkjets, most are dye inks and they look better on gloss because they're slightly transparent and so provide a nice contrast ratio. If you were on printing on matte, it wouldn't look as good generally because Inkjets require a coating to bring out the beauty of the dye inks, but there are matte papers (including card stock) as well as lustre that have the coating to take inkjet better than normal cardstock. Red river paper in the US specializes in inkjet printing, but they are only available through their website to keep economical. They provide color profiles also for many of the Ecotank printers, unfortunately, yours is not on the list, but the newer variants, including the 2850 are all on there. I just thought I would put it out there for others searching for "their paper". I'm not sure if I will go gloss on card or not. I prefer the matte look personally, but with a very light coating. So maybe might lean more towards fine art papers. (nothing too fancy, just some texture)

    A super easy way to weight down light items like this is to tape a couple of tabs on the back side that you can place sand bags on. Sandbags are easy to make using packing tape and ziplock bags - I like the 1 gallon bags. Just cover the bag in the packing tape for reinforcement and durability, fill the bag with sand, and place on whatever needs holding down. If you want to get really fancy, cover the bags with fabric. Either plain or covered, the bags tend to lay flat for packing, and can be stored under your car seat between shows.

      I use the rice heating pads that you can microwave. You can use anything from fabric to a long gym sock or a fabric wine bottle gift bag. Fill it with rice or beans from the bulk section at your supermarket. This makes them really economical and dual-use.

    What a lovely video of Peggy's Cove. Beautiful scenery. You took a good video even for background noise, which is so calming 😌 I'll be watching this multiple times. Thank you for recording it Rebecca 😊
