I moved to Louisiana last November and you pretty much summed it up . Other than the trash everywhere ( the dirty south) . And being from Maine I don’t understand how y’all say winter. This not winter 🤣
I've lived in Baton Rouge for all 42 years of my life. You forgot the crime and violence that has spiked in the past decade. That should DEFINATELY be on this list.
As a resident of BR for 4+years I would say the crime is a HUGE issue. I don't want to throw any shade on the YT channel (S.R.) business, but I cannot think of enough positive reasons to recommend moving to BR. MAYBE if you can move far enough OUT to one of the "burbs".
I lived most of my life in Baton Rouge. I moved out because of the Traffic, and the Crime. I have to visit my relatives, but I wouldn't live in Baton Rouge if you paid my rent.
"Refinery asthma" nope, raised there in the shadow of Exxon and nearly did not make it out in one piece. Every single time I visit I get so sick with my asthma. Not for me, I have to scuttle back to the fresh air of Costa Rica.
Some bad news about the interstate congestion remediation plans: I attended a couple of open meetings about interstate widening, the Washington St. exit, etc. Unfortunately, even if every measure were enacted, by 2030-2050, the traffic would only be as bad as it currently is-there will only be some relief immediately after they’re completed.
Just came across this. As a "Louisiana" refugee who left decades ago, this is a very honest assessment of the area. My only quibble is that you parrot misinformation that the vast majority of people have about public schools. Otherwise--and I've never heard of Shaun before today--very impressed with the clarity and truthfulness. (The heat, humidity, right wing politics and relative lack of opportunity drove me out of the state.)
Thanks for watching Greg, and I appreciate the input. If there was something that could drive me out of Louisiana one day, it would be the heat and humidity. I hope you have a Happy New Year.
Dig this man... My Entergy bill this month, for a 34-day billing cycle, with no late fees or past due amount, is $359.19. They have lost their minds. I need to call The Ghostbusters. Last month's bill was $274 even, and I thought that was outrageous. Who do I need to complain to about this?
It's the pine pollen that gets me. Over the years I think I must have gotten somewhat accustomed to it. When I first came to Baton Rouge back in the mid 80's I was sick as a dog for a week every June, which just so happened to be when I can due for vaca every year. I think the insurance rates are so high partly because so many people file false claims. They look at the insurance industry like it's the lottery. That costs us all a ton of money, and runs the companies off. We have Entergy. 3,400 s/f, 18 year old two story house in Prairieville. Gas heat and water heater. Winter bills $285, and we rarely run the heat. Summer running two units it over $400, with the daytime thermostat set at 79. It's killing me, but I have no option as far as I know. I wish I was paying what you are.
My allergies kill me too... seriously considering going to the doctor and seeing if they have some kind of shot because the over the counter stuff doesn't seem to be helping much. Summer gets me bad, but January has been really rough too. 100% agree on the insurance, and you can't go 30 seconds on the interstate without seeing a lawyer billboard... they're out there ambulance chasing. In that last 2700 sf house I was in, our Entergy bills were great... the newer houses are so energy efficient and it makes a big difference. I'm in a little 1500 sf house while I build my new one and our bill is about $250 per month. Should be in the new house within a month... it's 2400 sf living area, but has vaulted ceilings in a couple rooms... I'm curious to see what those bills will be. Demco will be the electric company at the new house, but I don't think there is much difference between the two.
I have lived in BR the past 6 years after 18 years in New Orleans. I agree with your list, but I would add crime to that list. Seriously, between the crime, bad traffic/drivers, and ever worsening insurance picture, I am seriously planning to retire elsewhere in the next 7 to 10 years. Currently eying some areas of far southern Illinois, for that Kentucky-like midwest 4 seasons weather, some cheaper housing, beautiful natural forested landscapes, and central location for more convenient road trips. Yes, real estate taxes are high there, but not in every county, and in any case, this is more than made up for by lack of any taxation of retiree income sources and slightly more modest sales tax. To be honest, I fear where Louisiana is headed politically under a likely Landry governorship, but that is another topic. For an neo-conservative voter, I realize that is a plus. But ew!🤮
There is no denying that there is crime in BR, but I've lived near multiple bigger cities across the country and have never came across one where crime wasn't an issue. I think it's unfortunately part of the deal when you live in or near the city. I can say that I've personally never felt unsafe when I'm out and about. When I was reading your post I was thinking about the high taxes in Illinois, but I didn't realize there were some lower tax counties. I know a couple guys from Illinois that just moved away and I've heard them talk about the crazy taxes, so I just assumed that it was statewide.
@@shaunramos crimewise, I agree, all larger cities are having more crime issues, but statistically BR is one of the worst, and BR and Louisiana in general has some of the worst law enforcement and criminal justice systems, which psychologically undermines my confidence that "the system" can safeguard me in any reliable sense. Beyond that, I should have clarified that I will be looking toward somewhat smaller towns within an hour's drive from either St. Louis to the west or Evansville, IN to the east. Don't want to live in a city, just visit whenever I want. Shawnee National Forest region of southernmost Illinois is quite different from the rest of the state, which may be why people don't think about it much. More like western Kentucky, but with different state laws and tax structure.
Hey Humberto, most of the videos auto-generated captions but a few of them didn't. I need to look into a service to add captions to the ones that don't do it automatically. Thanks for reminding me... hope you had a great Christmas.
Older house? Right now I'm in a smaller, older house while I finish building and my bill is more like $250. This house is almost half the size of my last house where I was paying $160.
Ilive in an older home in BR. I used to run my central air and the bills were killing me. Since I live alone, unless my son comes home for a while, I decided to buy small window units for the rooms I stay in the most. I only use the unit in my bedroom and don't cool the whole house. It's been a MAJOR savings for me. I can control my usage costs by using or not using the window units in any given room. Also, I run small fans occasionally to help circulate the cold AC air.

Definitely not the winter you're used to lol. We have little bits and pieces of winterish weather, which is a nice break from the brutal summers.
When I moved OUT of BR to MS just NORTH of BR, car insurance was cut in HALF.
When we moved to east TN, half of MS !!

Traffic. The traffic sucks.
I can't argue with that

Public Service Commission
I worked for Entergy at one of their nuclear stations. They are a disgrace.Know the kw/hr for your area.

Nola is the same way with some things

And the crime is out of this world bad! Especially in Baton Rouge
The worst thing about Baton Rouge is that it is in Louisiana .
Hi Shaun if possible enable the subtitles in your videos. Thank you!

The homeowners insurance only seems to reference the male gender too. As if only men own homes in Louisiana. I thought that was weird.
Reminder: We have gas heat and water heater.
Entergy charges what they want, NO rhyme or reason to it.
Maybe you can help sell my house in Sherwood Forest just lost my sister before Christmas will need someone to get a good price on the house .
Sorry for your loss Joseph. I'd be happy to help you out with it... all of my info is in the description so just reach out however you prefer.
Man said electric bill $160,,,try $400 and im i BR
