When they developed the ACLS system for the Navy, it was so accurate that, during carrier trials, the system could make the jet hit the same spot on the flight deck every single time causing slight warpage of the flight deck. They had to introduce an error signal into the system to vary where the plane touched down. Yep...not bad for '70's tech.
90s tech. ACLS was not available in the A model. Still very impressive though, considering other computers of the time were slower than sin and had storage capacities of a modern low tier smartphone.
Now all we need is the updated carrier with realistic comms and deck workers (at LEAST yellow shirts...but hopefully it’s possible to get all the crews from the refueling purple shirts to the ordinance specialists that arm the aircraft). Paranoid about not putting in the correct course for the runway. The briefings only supposedly list the BR course...but even they are wrong in the tutorials by about 8 degrees.
Cap. Many thanks. I believe you can access a Flashlight in the front cockpit that follows your cursor around i.e. it illuminates whatever you want to look at. Think it is "L" on keyboard. Best, Pete.
Thanks for the vid...have yet to try this in the tomcat at least... One thing I will def add as a tip for others: When intercepting the tacan final course radial, it's best to do so at a 45 degree angle rather than the pretty much 90 degree angle used in this video. That way it's a much smoother evolution of intercepting and turning into the selected course. Having said that, I'm sure Cap knew this...Pretty tough doing this landing and talking at the same time lol.
Really nice video ... now I will see it again to take notes ... and last, will try it on my own :D .. thanks a lot for the teaching; been loving your channel, dont know why I didnt discovered it earlier.
Which was run through computers on the ground, by many operators, not really in real time, and with very little control. Landing on the moon isn't really comparable.
Haha, take a breath, Cap. I could feel your stress in managing the plane and talking at the same time. ;) Thanks for the informative video, though! :D The Hornet is getting this eventually too, no?
I probably missed something but for me on the ACLS screen on the VDI the brakets are on the right and full bottom but on the hud they're perfectly aligned. That's weird
Nice one mate but how do you manage to jump back and forth from front to back seats, I can’t get back to the front seat even though I’ve got correct controls bound? I’m talking about instant action..I know you can’t in MP
Hello, I know this is an old video so I’m not expecting a response, but I couldn’t find an answer anywhere online. Anytime I use the ACLS I bolter. I’ve tried probably 10-15 times, the setup is the same as yours and I get the plane to automatically fly down to the deck, but it’s a bolter every time. Is this a known issue? Is there something I’m missing? I’d appreciate any help anyone might have thanks!
What I don't get is stuff like this has been around since the 1970s yet pilots even today are trained no to trust it at all. Weird considering how hard engineers work to make it safe.
Oh pilots are absolutely trained to trust thier gear and thier ground crew. Its still sketchy just because things like this are not commonly done so thier much more out of date with thier training. A Navy pilot typically lands on the carrier once or twice a day. They do NOT typically land at night, and especially not under emergency conditions.
I have not made night traps for a long time, but I think to remember much more light on the deck. Could be the video - or my bad memory. Also the light level in the cockpit was very low.
Though functional, the f14’s acls system is still highly inaccurate & unreliable, that’s my conclusion after 6 times of trying, presumably in reality, the f14’s acls system didn’t saw too much utility because of it’s immaturity, could say the true acls system is not available until f18c was put in services
@@crash8926 Whether it's realistic or not depends on what era your mission takes place in. Tomcat pilots were cleared to use Nightvision in '95, meaning they could have had it for just over 10 years, and well into the war in Iraq for CAS Ops
@@AdamLindgrenComposer I'm aware of that. What @Connor was talking about is using NVG's for night carrier landing. NVG's are never used for carrier landings.

we landed on the moon in the 60's junior - not eveything important started happening t he day you were born

*Blacker than the void*
"Not much to see there, not gonna lie."
Lol :')
Landing lights and formation lights would be nice to turn on... LOL
Damn, that's busy! Which is pretty crazy for an Autopilot! Great vid, thanks Cap :)
It certainly is incredible tech!

Amazing tech for the 70’s?
Dude, we went to the moon in the 60’s!
You really believe that?! HAHAHAHA! :D You probably believe the Earth is round too and that 2+2=4!

I believe L-ALT + L turns on the flashlight.
AP-CPLR is the Autopilot Coupler

I CANNOT get this to work. I'll stick to NVGs.
Why is my glide slop indicator acting as a fixed bar. It wont move at all! pls help someone?

If this is "automatic carrier landing", why do cap sound so stressed? 🤣
no speed brakes on ACLS ?
Impressive in all and any way! Should there not be more light on the carrier? (Turned on by asking for permission to land?)

yes
Can we do this during the day so we can see?
sure

yup
can we get rid of the fucking flight stick?? i dont have track ir so i cant see the fucking lines very well and i dont want to change my camera lol

0 - 9 = 351
351- 6 = 346
:)
How did you find out all those steps, asked some real F-14 pilot? o_o
The info is in the flight manual in several sections
Why didn’t you use the night vision key binding? It helps tremendously so you can actually see everything lol
But not very realistic!
I have not heard of this...
Grim Reapers it should be right shift or right ctrl and H together
