When they fix a pot hole in my area....it turns into a mini speed bump, like way to go you fixed a problem with another problem
They do it so that the cars and trucks compress it over time, making the repair more long-term.
@@visualdarkness , that's only when a crew digs into the roadbed. Try riding a bicycle, not only are those like steps but once traffic compacts them there is a dip both into the patch and the dip at the other end becomes a step up.
At least they fixed it. In my country, the road has more cracks than my ass but no body cares whatsoever.

Here outside my house in the uk a main road been repaired over 30 times over the years and all they fix the potholes with is gravel so it turns into a pothole after 2 weeks again

Where I live the government tends to repair the same stretch of perfectly fine road every year while ignoring nearby roads that are in atrocious condition.
In particular the main street of the city is in terrible condition and is just getting worse, its not some back road, its the main street of a city of 300,000.
You saw why. Reoairing the worst roads cost exponentally more than a decent one.

When I need to certify my car it's safe on the road, why the roads don't need any certifications they're safe for drive?
This would end up working for the worst there would be too much bureaucracy involved some pen pusher coming to 'inspect' the road whilst taking tons of taxpayer money and then if the road would be deemed ' unsuitable ' I can imagine them closing off the whole road until whenever the workers arrive to fix it could be months.

Politicians love building new infrastructure because it makes them look great, repairing infrastructure is sadly not as sexy...
As an employee of a road construction company I can tell you the problem is that the sub grade isn't being properly made and the pavement above it is not thick enough in addition to that the companies all want to employ 5 supervisors to every 1 laborer. State inspectors see the defects as the roads are being built and they don't give a shit and don't say anything, I guess they can't be bothered with the paperwork.

At my job we have a saying. Good enough for government work.
I live just off a secondary road and its been replaced 3 times in ten years. Each time they neglect the subsurface and then lay down less than 2 inches of ashpalt and the plows rip it up over winters. After three years of salt and plow blades it needs resurfacing. Can't imagine how much money they'd save if they had just redone it correctly.

Watzetzface no he means they pulled it out the ground and filled the pothole with dirt and planted it. It’s actually a smart protest to send a message and as he said they got fixed fast. The government will keep getting away with putting the blinders to ignore real issues so we send subtle protests and it worked

Your commentary, while having good points, is only 1 dimension of the problem. Simply tossing money at a problem doesn't always fix it. The asphalt industry loves the cash cow of city/state contracts. Guaranteed a lab analysis of the asphalt on average would have issues with purity. Chemical fillers are added to cushion profits. Concrete roads are "too expensive" it is said and so asphalt is the preferred material, but the politicians are short-sighted and don't realize they're being conned at the taxpayer's expense. Concrete companies vastly outnumber asphalt companies, which makes a bidding process much more competitive and potentially cheaper, but the sad truth is many politicians are grossly incompetent and have no negotiation strategy. The average city council is full of people with a nice smile, but lack the ability to get the job done. Don't believe me? Go to meetings/events with elected persons and pay attention to what they say beyond the normal cute small talk. Additionally, politicians can conveniently defer to talking about infrastructure issues like potholes as a diversion tactic at opportune moments. It happens all the time. Many of the problems we face in society aren't always because of a lack of technological progress, or because of financial burdens.

Asphalt has good grip
We had that problem in my city for years, still do. The roads here are/were AWFUL, and they were all asphalt. Finally they're redoing a ton of streets, and they're even putting in concrete streets that will actually last instead of just falling apart again after a year.
Having a driveway paved, the company doing the job would only use certain suppliers because most put out poor quality.
In India we have many more potholes! We have reverse speedbreakers which go underground :D !

This is part of why I've rejected the idea of lowering my car... In many cases, just patching potholes and fixing other issues as they arise isn't a viable long-term solution, the whole road needs to be re-done. Potholes are just a shallow-surface problem (literally), the problem extends much deeper - many bridges are falling down, in desperate need of replacement. Some are being repaired, but that's a loosing battle. Much of our highway infrastructure was built in the '50s-'60s, and was designed for a 50-year lifespan - it's done well, but it's time is up. Something I've seen a fair amount of in Colorado (particularly the Denver area) is small quiet neighborhood roads being redone before main city streets, which seems absurd. But there's another thing we must keep in mind with this other than cost - road repair, and even moreso much-needed complete rebuilds, require that roads be partially or fully closed or diverted for some time. This further increases the cost of traffic management around the construction, hinders traffic, causes traffic jams, and all other manner of bad things, I imagine that's part of the reluctance to do these long-overdue repairs, especially to spend the time (not to mention money) do them properly. Something I'd like to see more efforts on is doing construction quickly, developing methods to make it all run faster - do in a couple days what often seems to take weeks or months, do in a month what can take years, which would be helped by being able to close the entire road for that brief time rather than a large portion of the effort being working around a partially-open road. New methods in planning, having all equipment and materials staged beside the project prior to attacking. Using new equipment that can do the whole task quicker and with fewer steps - I envision a train-like repaving machine that rips up old asphalt, recycles it onboard, does whatever necessary surface treatments, repaves, rolls, paints, all in a single pass, without having to ship material in or out and no boots on the ground (much safer). To have everything in place, each machine movement and step planned out like a choreography. For workers to have been briefed in detail on the plan and exactly what they would be doing when. Attack and give it all they got, maybe the mentality of a football team or military force (compare with current construction workers standing around), try to build a team and camaraderie mentality among them. And get shit done!
Quill Maurer Poor road conditions & potholes (though I don’t live in the US) is a major reason why I stopped dailying a hot hatchback for a, tall riding CUV. Yes, the enthusiast in me laments the choice, but low profile tires and stiff suspension components fair horribly with poor roads, it can become too expensive/tedious to maintain them.
zeroelus I can remember the day my motor blew on one of my cars. That car had low profile tires and my substitute ride had some decently chunky 60 profile tires. The difference in ride quality over bumps was night and day. That was on a 2 year old car vs a 12 year old car respectively.

You guys from US are lucky, here In lithuania after winter there is quite some potholes, but they are not too bad, but when they want to fix it, then it becomes really bad.
lets say there is a small bump on almost all streets in the city, and few potholes, they fix it like this, they choose the street, they dig out big ass potholes, to re fill, but the main thing they leave them, for about 1-2weeks and all you have in 300m street about 50 potholes in shape of square, that are man made and they are so deep, that, you can damage wheels or suspension only by going 10km/h and they are there to stay for 2 weeks, let me note you that before that there was like 2 potholes and minor bumps in that street before fixing it and after that, they choose next street and repeat, until next winter comes, those streets literally a mine field.
oh and half of the time they forget to put down a sign that go slow and that there is potholes, almost everytime you find out about potholes the hard way, almost everyone I know have damaged the car to that issue including me, this is such a stupid problem that should not exist, just fix the potholes the same day you started fixing them.

Raising taxes is a bogus answer to this problem. It only allows for more corruption and more poor public money management. As a civil engineer who knows a thing or two as the host pointed out I can tell you the lobby inside the white house and senate make billions a year in the sole purpose to keep these roads in poor conditions. A dear friend of mine who graduated 30yrs prior to me and has specialized in asphalt and road building has built countless roads who require little to no maintenance. Wanna know the catch? They're all privately owned. Like I said, public money is but a thing of waste to politicians and big corporations. Also another lame excuse people give is saying that roadworks help keep people employed. Yeah, so does drug dealing but I don't see them raising their flags asking for your vote. Bottom line is if you don't complain they'll stick it up further until you can't take it anymore.

@@karremanchill95 Not a civil engineer but I'm a software developer who writes and maintains software for civil engineers for managing road networks and tracking maintenance and repairs. And the cheapest way to have good quality roads is simply preventative maintenance.
When a road is freshly paved it will have a certain lifespan, while specific duration will vary based on climate and traffic load... it may last 2-3 years in a near perfect condition before you start to see faults in the road. Then eventually the road condition will reach a "critical" point, where the road is no longer structurally sound, and its rate of deterioration increases drastically. Once this critical point is passed, it may only last 6-12 months before the road becomes nearly unbearable to drive on, or at the very least very uncomfortable. Then after this phase, the rate of deterioration smooths back out. If you plot the rate of deterioration over time it will look like an "S" curve.
Now obviously it is extremely expensive and time consuming to scrap up the entire road and do a fresh pave. It is far more cost efficient to do preventative repairs every year so that the road never reaches the critical point. And in the northern places like in Chicago or Canada, where they experience freeze and thaw cycles each year, that will drastically decrease the lifespan of a road. So preventative maintenance is far more important.
@@karremanchill95 Roman roads have lasted thousands of years - or look at Germany's high-speed autobahn. It has a crazy thick foundation layer to resist water expansion and cracking. We just don't build things to last as long here.
Vitu dude your dumb most of roads paved now WERE some by private companies. Just because the government is funding it doesn’t mean they built it. They outsource it to private companies and give them contracts to maintain it which they often don’t. The only reason why it’s expensive now because we let it get this bad. Keeping up with maintenance on the road keeps costs down but we ignore it and in the end it costs more from ignoring it.

He said the best roads were "private roads" ie roads not owned or payed for by the government. They are privately owned, and so the owners want to get a good value for their dollar, because they have to spend their own money to fix it. For politicians, it's not their money that builds or fixes the roads, so they don't give a shit how much it costs. And like he said, often it's better for them if it costs more, because they get lobbied by those same companies who are going to build the roads.
We dont need an increase in taxes, we need a decrease in crap spending. And for as cheap as dirt roads might be to repair, they go to hell much faster...if you think potholes are bad, try driving down several miles of washboard!

Trevor Risen same here in Minnesota, many dirt roads are so bad you cant go more than 15-20mph without destroying your suspension (or your back) or losing control.
Krimson Wolf true enough, but if we were to cut spending we could funnel more money into road repair, with something more durable than asphalt. They fixed a few potholes down the road from me last summer, and the heat alone caused the patch to lift and make an even bigger hole.

You aren't going to convince me that extra taxes will go to upkeeping the roads. I live in Illinois and the "extra" tax we pay means that our roads are way worse than the next state over even though they don't have an extra tax.

It's a specific skill. That's why, before I get my driver's license, I want to do a speedrun of the worst road in my city for potholes, Hall Street up by I-70. I want to be able to drive like I'm playing Mario Kart so I don't hit potholes too hard

I live in Michigan. By far, the worst state for road conditions.
Why do our roads suck? Because politicians propose tax increases and new taxes year after year saying "its to fix the roads" then they put the money into programs that aren't even road-related. For example, the gas tax increase of ~18 cents/gallon was supposed to generate 500 million in revenue per year for the state.
But then, 350m went to "education" (which translates to salaries for administrators) and 110m went to "welfare programs" (ie "poor people" who abuse such programs to avoid working)
Oh, then they choose to do road "improvements" instead of fixing existing roads. 2 mile stretch of highway that doesn't need repaving? Repave it for 13 million dollars, then ignore the literal minefield on the road just before the onramp. Then, they increase the cost of registration, and enforce the replacement of license plates older than 10 years, regardless of condition.
It's alright to tax people to death "to fix the roads" as long as 80% of those tax dollars go to wasteful spending right? right?

The reason I've replaced my fork seals three times in a year is because of the road leading to my place of employment. To avoid replacing fork seals again I've taken to riding in the opposing lane of traffic just to avoid the minefield of potholes the north traveling side of the road. I will be part of the 33% of road condition fatalities.
Reminds me of the other Michigan boondoggles like tax increases to improve the water quality of the great lakes raise the taxes then the money they were already spending on the lakes goes to other things instead. Same goes for the lottery profits which were supposed to go to improve the schools the lottery money did go to the schools but the other money the state was already spending on schools got subtracted from education and went elsewhere.

CA spends 512 billion a year needs 13b according to San Jose Mercury news per yr for ten years to fix outdated highways and roads. Maybe CA should re-prioritize its budget or not. But you dont need North Dakotas money because CA wants to spend 56b a year on gov pensions or 48b on welfare and 110b on healthcare. Pony up or drive into a pothole.

Ahmmm... Not quite! U forget to consider that taxes r mostly wasted on bureaucracy rather than actual product.. I also see roads that r lightly damaged repaired rather than the ones that really need it. And finally we build roads incorrectly and then salt the S@&t out of them causing them to crack. I can go on and on. Bottom line $ is not the issue.

Literally no one doesn't say that. I actually rarely see people saying the roads where they live are good, unless they're Dutch or Japanese. The roads where I live, St. Louis, are actually in pretty good condition for the most part. Some roads here are infamous for their potholes, like River Des Peres, Hall Street, Jamieson, Martin Luther King Jr, and oh dear god Bayless motherfucking Avenue. But others like Jefferson, Skinker, Kingshighway, Big Bend and Lindbergh have lasted so long without needing a repave that there are depressions in the road at every traffic light

As time goes by and I see these comments more often, I start to think that us Mexicans and you Americans have a lot more in common than we thought.
Aaron is thinking outside of the box. Not something the government encourages. Getting private pothole repair workers who are competitive with each other would be too damn efficient.
Nobody wants to pay more for taxes when so much tax money is already being pocketed, wasted, and handed off to government contractors that made campaign donations. Start repairing roads with recycled plastic. It's cheap and good for the world.

@Asurems just because it worked in norway doesn't mean it will work for the US. The US and Norway have drastically different laws and is also immensely larger than Norway. It is hard to account for all of thise extra variables that Norway doesn't have to deal with. There is no guarantee that 200 dollars per car tax would work the same way it did for Norway and could end up just going into the pockets of those damned weasels in washington. We americans don't like to trust our politicians specifically becuase they don't give us a reason to. California spent approximately 5 billion dollars to try and fix the homeless crisis. What ended up happening was a complete joke of a solution and the problem getting even worse. Just tossing more money at something will not fix anything as many Americans know from first hand experience.
@Asurems That tax works for Norway because those funds actually goes to fixing the roads. That wouldn't necessarily happen here, however. They'd most likely just take the money and leave the roads as-is.

I'm a truck driver in Nevada, and I go from Reno to Elko and back 4 days a week (about 570 miles round trip). The highway is fantastic and pretty smooth.
I had a co-worker joke that "you can tell when you cross the border from California into Nevada, because the road stops moving" (bumpy road vs smooth as glass)
Yup, in Illinois some of the roads have stretches that have potholes the width of the whole road for miles.
Living in Belgium I can tell you we also have a sh*tload of potholes :-(

TheLeewi98 While European gas is more expensive, the US relies on cheap fuel. The US is huge. Most people cannot walk or bicycle to their work, school, etc. and public transportation cannot pick up the slack. Hiking gas prices here to $4+ a gallon would instantly put the brakes on the economy.

One thing that's may be important to add: the sprawling suburbs of the US gave you an incredible amount of road per inhabitant. Following that, the US has to spend far more on roads on a per head base, then most other regions of the world. In relation to germany you have to maintain 2 and a half times the road per head. And that doesn't account for the width, since american roads are normaly much wider then european roads. A higher density and smaller roads could allow you to save a big amount in road maintenance.
The solution is buy a pizza from dominos and say a pothole was in the road and ruin your pizza.

Thanks for the compliment. Though we pay a lot of road tax, motor vehicle tax and excise tax on fuel because of this. One of many reasons people ride bicycles a lot and we come to Belgium to refuel.

Drove in NY/NJ for 30 years. Potholes there are worse than anywhere. Literally got 2 blown tires and cracked rims in 15 seconds on NJ turnpike. On video no less!
If you have a good car and a manual you can skip a small(15inch) pothole by skipping but otherwise you are screwed.
Only positive is it taught me how to fix a tire anywhere, unless on the sidewall, on any continent.

Where I live having a low car is uncommon. Literarily we have very few sports cars and muscle cars here.

If you ask me, it's cheaper in the long run to do it right the first time.
I'm in Canada, it snows here, which means snow plows. When they patch a road full of potholes in the summer, the snowplows simply remove the patches over the following winter.
When they completely re-pave a section of road INSTEAD of patching it, the snowplows don't destroy it in a couple months. In my opinion though, pavement / tarmac is too soft and prone to deformation to be a reasonable long-term road surface. We should be paving our roads with something less prone to temp / humidity changes and something that doesn't deform as easily. Yea, it's more expensive up-front, but if it means better roads long term, why wouldn't you?

I'm sure someone's mentioned it by now, but the Roman's built roads several centuries ago that are still in damn near the same condition the were when they were constructed.. Idk why it's so difficult to do the same things THEY did to OUR roads.. If we did, I guarantee our roads wouldn't fall apart anywhere NEAR as fast as they do now, & I'll bet repairing/maintaining them would be quite a bit easier, cuz they'd have a stronger base..

How are LA and SF politically naive? If you combine the population of the Greater LA Area and the entire SF metropolitan area you'd get to a total of 22-23 million people (18.7 mil for GLAA, 4,7 for SF metropolitan area). That alone makes for around 2/3 of CA's population. The rest of CA seceding from those two areas would probably ruin much of the subsequent state economy because they's have a shit ton of land with way less people.
It makes zero economic sense for the rest of CA to secede (assuming it even being a possibility to begin with) as it would probably leave most of CA worse off. Just because you do not like many of CA's policies does not make them naive. Just because you think your ideology/policy ideas are better than CA's current leadership doesn't mean they are better
A lot of roads where I grew up in Florida were either needlessly reworked or purposfully made worse to secure contracts for repair.
A lot of the problem with legislation and acquisition is unintended consequences. Not all laws are written maliciously but the unintented result is increased administrative costs through programs that try to increase accountability and auditing. These programs often cost more than the losses they prevent. The road budget likely is siphoned off by projects that are required just because of some weird rule or also because sometimes the issue isnt a money issue but an audit issue. There are also situations where states lose money for next years budget if they dont use all the funds in their current budgets. Money ends up wasted instead of conserved because they get penalized for being frugal.

We have the densest road network in Europe even though our population density is smaller than the Netherlands for example.
The problems are even worse in the former industrial areas of Wallonia where they built way too much infrastructure due to the infamous waffle-iron politics and now they don't raise enough money to cover the maintenance costs.
