Good video. Bee flyfishing for 62 years and been a vest guy forever. I have ha 4 vest in my life. Have read many articles on the subject. Some guys say vests arent cool. Bu then I see young guys who look like they just walked out of an Orvis or Patagonia shop that couldnt catch a fish if their life depended on it, but they sure are "cool". I'm certainly not the "coolest" guy on the water, but I have my gear where I need it, and I catch fish. If you are starting out, get a vest. Worry more about learning to catch fis than being cool
Thanks for the video, my husband has expressed an interest in Fly Fishing, and I'm trying to get a few Christmas presents for him to get started. This helped!
Good vid, but vests have evolved. I've fished with most set ups. Now, the hybrid vest/backpack is the go to. Water bladder, shelf pockets $50. Absolutley love it
Hey mate great video. Just getting into fly fishing also over here in Aus and was undecided on a vest or a pack and I think I am going to opt for the patagonia hybrid vest. Just wondering what is the brand on that net please? The black rubber netting looks awesome. Cheers and stay safe 🤙
Your observations are ok for apparently where you fish? But in the state of Pennsylvania you are not always terribly far from the Stream? I have fished two different vests in the last 45 years, and I do not like billowing pockets of stuff protruding to my front. The sling pack is way more ergonomic to fish. Completely out of your way, as compared to my Filson strap vest. The sling vest was much more comfortable to use. As I said earlier, I have been flyfishing for 45 years. Logging many many days on the streams! Both of these have their place.
I agree they both have their place. I stand by a vest being the better choice if you can only buy one of the two. The sling is more efficient (if you know what you need for that stream) I agree, but in my opinion, the vest offers more versatility for those who only have the option to buy one. I appreciate your experience but I’m speaking to the beginners and what gear will help them accomplish their goals while also learning what their priorities are in terms of must have items vs luxury.

Can we get a video with your thoughts on fanny packs?
