Actually, _The Masked Singer_ requires an instrumental backing track. Kevin said that one of the reasons they wanted to do the show was because they wanted to do something new, and working with an instrumental track met those criteria.
My personal opinion of PTX using instruments is that they are artists first. They should have free range to do whatever they feel is best. I love their acapella and marvel at what they can do with no instruments, but I fully enjoy when they do something different, too. Your facial expressions mimic what I assume 99% of us did our first time hearing this 😮… I know all the reactors I have watched had that same face 😂❤.
They did this for the mask singer. They performed it once with their masks and then once without their masks on. I hope you go watch the one without the masks. They entered as The California Rolls ( sushi rolls).The songs are arranged to be a shorter than normal length and this time the went with instruments and without Kevin beatboxing to fool the audience and judges ( everybody familiar with PTX knew who it was as soon as Scott began singing in the first week! His voice is so distinctive). They did 5 other songs as the went thru the weekly elimination process until there was only 3 contestants left and they sang this, but still lost. I've been following Pentatonix since 2011 on the Sing Off, and there are times I'm not sure who's singing what. When they are trying to blend their voices, Kirstin and Mitch can sound the same, and so can Scott and Matt. But when one of them takes the lead and doesn't have to worry about the blend, their voices are unmistakable.
I think we will be hearing more instruments added as time goes on. They did this for "The Masked Singer"" which is why it's short and why there were instrumentals. They have certainly proved they can do acapella in every genre, so if their artistic process leads them to more instrumentals, I'm totally in! There is a video of this where you can see them singing. It's their unmasked sing out for Masked Singer. They were singing their asses off!
I have lost count of the number of tImes I've heard there cover of Creep now and it still blows me away every single time. Your face when Scott cut loose and then Mitch slapping us all... perfection. I need more rocking PTX. I always had an inkling that they could, if they chose to really rock out. Id love to hear them cover some punk pop, Green Day, MCR etc, maybe some Linkin Park etc givennthey can rap too. I love them when they are pure a capella, but when they add instruments it just...blows my mind (maybe its best they only keep that as a rare treat, idk if the music industry could handle a PTX that went full instruments all the time.

Yes, great reaction, amazing is Pentatonix. It is from the Masked Singer Season 9 where they were the California Rolls. You can see them sing this unmasked when they are revealed. This isn't Acappella in this one. The harmonies are all them. You can even see them do it live on the European world tour. Check them out as they sound exactly the same. This is a great cover.

I agree with you. There ARE some songs which should be covered by them in strictly A Capella, but that’s largely because they ALWAYS upgrade the cover with their PTX magic. I’m also probably one of those Pentaholics who absolutely prefer them singing without instruments! But that’s probably because, unless they factor in the instruments themselves, the musicians in the band playing with them ALWAYS drown them out. ALWAYS! When they do the arrangements, factoring the specific instruments and when those instruments accompany their vocals, it’s amazing! But, as you know, it’s equally amazing what they can accomplish with just their voices. Every one of them.

I wish this song was 17 minutes long but with the time they were given on the show, they completely obliterated this cover 🥰. (BTW, I'm an OG fan from the Sing-Off days and the instruments do NOT bother me. Of course their acapella is unmatched but even with instruments, PTX always understands the assignment.)
Matt has sang deep many times. Check out Making Christmas, Greatest Showman, several of the evolution videos like Rhianna or Ariana Grande, Star Spangled Banner 2023, and songs from the Lucky One CD. As one commenter Margaret has noted, he's very deep in the live shows . Thanks for your reaction.

It's Scott. Someone posted a phone camera video of them singing this in Germany(?) at the concert last night, and it's Scott singing the high parts as well.
This was on the masked singer show. They were trying not to let the audience know it was them. There are instruments to fool everyone.

They were live, not edited. They did do part of one song a capella. This one was amazing though. Mitch was the high voice after Matt.
