I listened to Bill every night in the early 70s in Paris, Texas. I listened on a transistor radio under my pillow. Later, in 1975, I found out I could get him after midnight on my pickup radio while stationed with the Marines in Yuma, Arizona. It made me feel a little closer to home.
Hello ! I have been listening to this station in 820 Khz from Monterrey N.L México for a long time since 1987, the signal is heard very well at night, I like their country music programm , I congratulate you and many greetings
Two DFW Legends! The Midnight Cowboy Bill Mack, and our Weather Icon Harold Taft! Mack was the classic DJ, multitasking on all that vinyl, and those cartridges, while smoking a cigarette! The good old days, when everybody smoked everywhere! Bill and Harold are missed!
I sure do miss hearing him on the Mighty BAP 820. In 1979 or 80, my brother and I shared a room and at 2 or 3 in the morning, Ol' Bill would play the theme song to 'Dallas'. He was fun to listen to and this kind of radio is what I long for. I wish there was a full 8 hours of his show posted somewhere so I could just have it on at night when I work on stuff for the kids at school.
Never met Bill in person but his nationwide show in the 90s fed thru ABC Radio Networks in Dallas to NY for distribution. I got called by them one night when the cue tone line had dropped...I got to the ABC RN building on Montfort and found half the dial up auto couplers weren't dropping the line when the caller hung up....seems ATT screwed up when switching a node out at the Addison CO. Moved the cue circuit to a working coupler line and called Mack's producer line to give them the new temporary number. Took ATT 3 weeks to fix the issue...the ATT sales rep for ABC called me laughing saying "I'm not technically inclined but I KNOW about CPC and they did the same thing in Arlington 4 weeks ago!" She sent me 4 50yd passes to the Cotton Bowl that year!!
That was being played at 33, it was from an LP. Orange Blossom Special by Felix Slatkin was his WBAP show theme song. It stayed with him thru his days on Sirius XM as well.
Wow...one of the nicest guys in radio, country music, songwriting musician. A big part of my life in many ways. Inspired me to go into radio broadcasting for one. Years later I was thrilled when Lisa Layne and I were guest on his overnight show promoting our stage show about Patsy Cline in Fort Worth. Can't remember the year, think around 1998 or 99. Talked to him many a time over the years always kind.
Not very nice about his lady coworker Darla's looks, was he? :-) I used to listen to this guy every so often from Lafayette, LA late at night when the clear channel signal carried over almost all the country.
Driving a truck for 40 years Bill Mack keep me going sure miss Mr Mack rest in peace

Bill Mack got me thru many a night working security jobs in the early 90s. Still miss him.
Someone needs to make a movie about this legend.

I remember to listening to him on "Country Crossroads" when I was temporarily living in Arlington, Virginia.
I used to hear him on AFRTS in Germany. And his co-host was Jerry Clower.
I would listen to him until I got sleepy after a Texas Rangers game and wrap up. Good memories
I caught the Orange Blossom Special on the regular. I wonder if that's what turned me into a night owl? I loved Bill Mack and Clear Channel 820.
Great fun this clip ! Whatever that first record on the back turntable is - it looks like an LP, but he's playing it at 45rpm.

If it was a clear blue sky,and Harold Taft said it was going to rain.......wear a raincoat & grab an umbrella?
Is that the same Bill Mack that recorded for Starday records back in the 50s & 60s?
If you rode with the one paul k called the big T you heard bill mack

1:46 She had the 60's tall hair. (the beehive)
He smoked a packet of cigarettes each shift to keep his voice in tune.
Ol’ Bill seems a bit high in this video.

I clearly believe he was joking with and about her. Probably even in on the joke!
He used to call her "dumpy Darla".
Is he saying "Darla?" And, "she's not anything special as far as good looks is concerned?" Was he blinded by the smoke?
