Pre-internet times we still had television and people with satellite television had sumo watch parties. We did. I was a very sick kid and getting to have a watch party for the basho was great. It made all the treatments and pain worth it.

I'll say it anyway. Thank you, Hakuho. I am glad I got to witness at least some portion of a once-in-a-lifetime career. Thank you as well, Chris, for bringing it to us.
Just came here after watching a space ice video on pathetic Steven seagal. Can't describe my feelings. Hakuho should have shown him the middle finger during the ceremony.
I’m sure he paid a lot to get this honor. Kinda like his “budda” thing where he claimed to a certain actor that he was now a deity bc of an honor given over similar means.
I was alive during the time of Taiho and seen him battle in the 60’s in black and white along side of my mother while watching in Hawai’i. I watched Chiyonofuji, and cheered the likes of Akebono and Musahimaru, Hakuho was different. It’s hard, and unfair in my humble opinion, to say he’s the greatest of all time as each of those mentioned brought a vigor, excitement, and innovation that was necessary for those times. He will always be legendary in his achievements and will be spoken about for generations to come. That is undeniable.
Maybe greatest in just numbers but you are correct the amount of things each of those men have done for the sport cannot be measured in the same way. May Coach Miyagino continue to effect the sport and may he train many ozeki and hopefully a couple Yokozuna.

What an amazing event! I'm glad you were able to be a part of it, Chris. Hakuho is the GOAT, without doubt. His 45 yusho is a record that is likely to never be broken. His ceremony was the most grandiose I've seen, and very befitting someone who accomplished what he did.
I'm glad to say I've seen him wrestle live at the kokugikan and get the yusho! I was also able to see him during the award ceremony. It deserving that so many dignitaries came out to send the off the Yokozuna. He is definitely the GOAT! Arigatou Yokozuna!

Incredible, I feel honoured to have lived during the time the greatest Sumo wrestler was fighting in the dohyo. What a spectacular sumo record he held. My only wish is to one day be able to see the next Hakuho emerge. Thank you so much, Chris, for documenting this historic slice of sumo history.
Chris - I'm so excited to see your coverage. The pageantry of Hakuho's retirement and you explaining... so wonderful. I love that you talked about how Mongolia was represented, about the kabuki performed, the representation of his stable and the top tier, and people like Gackt being able to participate and how they did it. WHEW!!! That's a lot!!! But you never do things by halves, and I deeply appreciate it.
Hakuho the Great. I may not see another like him in my lifetime. He had skill, charisma, technique, and a tremendous ability to observe his opponent's strengths and weaknesses. Hakuho the Great.
Thank you so much for this content, it’s an incredible spectacle to see Hakuho finally cut his top knot. (Though… Steven Segal? That was weird to see.) Thanks again for your hard work, it’s well appreciated as always!
Steven Segal was filmed in russia stating that Ukrainian POW were struck by GMLRS missiles. Not only is that a ridiculous lie, Segal has zero expertise for the topic. He is a useful idiot for russian propaganda. I no longer care what that fat actor does or says, other than to insure that he reaps the rewards for his perfidity.
To see this disgusting person in this memorable and excellent video was completely unexpected. Why did Chris include him here, why? People like Segal choose events like this, pay lots of money for advertising themself and say that I'm a cool guy.
I was not a big fan of Hakuho, but always admired his strength. So, I wholeheartedly think he well deserved every bit of this grand ceremony. Hakuho owes Sumo a lot, and vice versa.
What a fantastic, heartwarming reporting! Thank you Chris! Can't believe I have lived through all of his professional career and that it is over now. Guess I can think myself happy having witnessed it...
Thank you for enjoyable Sumo! His son desires a live outside Sumo and we hope for his best. The effort to honor his father he showed in the final match was beautiful.
Wow, I knew this moment was coming ,I could feel it, I wish I had more time for Sumo, but such is life, I am so happy I saw this wonderful man in so many tournaments, What a beautiful and such respectful ceremony this was to watch. I have never actually seen a retirement to this fashion as many of the Sumos I follow do not have the reputation of this man here. My oh my, I could only imagine being there
A fantastic piece, Chris. Thank you. Had goosebumps for almost the entire run of the video. I felt particularly moved by seeing and hearing the Mongolian elements that took part in the ceremony; though he's a naturalized Japanese citizen, and though Sumo is and will remain distinctly Japanese, it's obvious he loves Mongolia still, and it warms my heart to see cultures share deep respect for one another and mutually partake in a significant cultural event. Hakuho surely worked harder than any other to make that possible, though Asashoryo took the first step. I'm so grateful I got into Sumo in may 2021 just in time to learn about Sumo and Hakuho to realize the significance of his last Basho in July. Even though I've just seen one basho with him in it, thanks to all I've read about and seen of Hakuho (and your channel is a significant part of it) I still feel like he's missing. The last bout with Terunofuji is still my favorite Sumo moment, and I hardly think it will be surpassed, but rather magnified, throughout the years. However, it's not all gloom, not at all. In some ways I think Hakuhos, or rather Miyaginos, story has just had it's first triumphant part finalized. I think a glowing future is ahead for Sumo with him as the head of his stable and a proponent of Sumo. In some ways I think this was just a beginning for something maybe even greater. I very much hope so at the very least.
Thank you Chris for covering such a momentous occasion for sumo fans around the world. Hakuho will forever be remember for his performances and unyielding grit and determination on the dohyo. But now as the era of hakuho the rikishi has now passed, I am hopeful to see what he does as coach miyagino.
This is a wonderful video, Chris. You have done a great thing with this channel. Your videos are not only invaluable documentation, but masterful examples of journalistic coverage. You are among a pantheon of sports journalists.
From the video excerpts I have seen that whatever Harumafuji said to him he wasn't able to contain himself and bursted into tears. He is such an emotional giant.
I rediscovered sumo JUST in time to watch his final tournament. I can’t help but feel angry with myself for not having found it sooner so I could’ve seen more of his sumo live. 😔
Wonderfully and thoughtfully narrated Chris, thank you! That was well said of his son. If his son chose to sumo, SURELY the expectations placed on him would be massive. There will likely never be another Hakuho, not in our lifetimes anyway. Looking forward to seeing what his stable will produce!
I'm very happy and proud to witness this occasion for Hakuho's retirement. It was my last class of secondary school when I started watching Sumo Tournaments, the incredible thing that happened is when NHK World Channel releases the Basho is the late night in my country (0:30 AM) local time, but I was happy to wait to watch Sumo Wrestling. And so goes the greatest of us all, that who we should strive to become. The most dominant athlete in recent memory and possibly ever to live, unrivaled and unparalleled. We will never see his like again. Rest now, Hakuho. Miyagino, may you rise.
Glad that I picked up Sumo, when I did. MY START was Hakuho's last basho, almost 2 years ago, this coming March. I didn't TRULY realize what I was witnessing then, as I do now. I just thought that this "Hakuho" dude was a bit of a badass. Lol, NOW, I realize that being a badass hardly scratches the surface of Hak-man's greatness! I thank the Sumo Gods that I got to witness him live, with my own eyes. Here's to Hakuho, THE G.O.A.T.!!! 🐐 🥃
It was really unfortunate and disappointing that Asashoryu wasn't able to attend to cut Hakuho's hair. His greatest rival and friend. Instead we got someone like Steven Seagal to have the privilege to cut the hair of one of the greatest Yokozuna of all time.
@@barath4545 Hakuho and Asashoryu grew up together. They were friends and remained friends even after Asashoryu retired. I think Asashoryu is one of the big reasons Hakuho decided to go in to sumo as well. He went first and was successful.
Let's not crap on Seagal! He's a bit of a joke now, but he was a big star in the past, and he has always been a big fan and supporter of the martial arts community. I'm surprised he's a big enough sumo fan to pay the price to snip hair, but if he's a fan and has the money, I'm glad he was there!
1:55 what made me sad while watching the vod of the ceremony was that it felt like some people coming to cut his hair didn't really care and were only there to show themselves ( a lot of them were lost on the dohyo and didn't know which way to go despise so many other having done it just prior to them. they didn't care enough to pay atention.) Other haire cuter were touching in their display of respect and afection like Harumafuji.
You don't know that. They could have been nervous, or just taken away by the moment of being part of something that meant so much to them. You're intentions may be good for Hakuho, but you are just speaking out of your ass
@@Official-OpenAI The same way you can't know that people are nervous or taken away by the moment you are just talking out of your ass. While i based my assumption on the fact that several persons far in the ceremony didn't know which way to exit the Dohyo. Meaning they didn't pay attention to the other going before them. i can understand the first ten having troubles but after that it means they weren't watching.
@@bliblivion Well its a strange assumption to make that "people coming to cut his hair didn't really care and were only there to show themselves" just because they didn't rehearse where to walk.
@@Official-OpenAI it's not a problem of rehearse a walk XD you enter one way and get out on the side, you observe the guy in front of you and do the same XD. And yes it's a status marker to participate to this ceremony. Go look the entire ceremony (it was up on many youtube channels, japanese ones) it's blatantly clear they don't even watch the others or looked up what to do, they don't see that they need to put back the cisors back and hold it to the atendant waiting for him to take them as if 50 people didn't just did it before them.
We have been lucky to watch him fight. His legend will go for ages. One of my best life moment was when i was able to meet him and talk to him after keiko in January 2016. These 5 minutes are nothing for him. But they mean so much for him.
Wow! Truely a masterpiece of a video Chris. The music, the commentary the great footage, together really was moving. A video that truely gave justice to the greatest ever. Thank you!
Thank you, Chris, for this coverage & your words. I'm typing this with tears in my eyes. It's hard to believe that sumo goes on without Hakuho but go on it must.
It must have been so moving to finally hear his homeland’s anthem being played at the venue. Let’s hope that he is treated with the respect he deserves for his singlehanded dominance in the sport.
For people who haven't seen other videos of the event, it wasn't just about the money though this is the main reason for these events and its good to hear from Chris how it all works. But much more than that it was an emotional occasion - Hakuho was fighting back the tears on more than one occasion.
How did I miss this?!...started the day with Shozan's retirement which had me in tears. Hakuho's on the other hand left me speechless....and made my day! Nothing compares to Sumo - nothing!!!....🙂
A big part of the event, or so it seemed, was highlighting the sheer value of the Hakuho brand for the JSA... with all that it entails. He whole-heartedly embraces the land that saw him thrive, and all that it represents, but still proudly represents his land of birth. His brand alone stands strong and proud on its own, yet he has impacted so many and so powerful that, should he (or his allies) ever need help, people will trip over each other to do so, even at a premium (he "only" got 300 cutters... yet, at such an exorbitant price tag, it highlights the level of support that the Hakuho brand commands). His Miyagino stable is already full to the brim with future stars, while the respect that his name commands, and the work he has put on elevating amateur sumo, will provide his stable with a pipeline of strong, proven rikishi, to dominate the sumo world for years to come. If the JSA wishes to acquire all of those boons that Hakuho brings, he is but glad to provide them... as long as the JSA accepts and embraces him as he is.
This video was not long enough. Thank you Chris, if it wasn't for you, most of us wouldn't get a good grasp of the whole thing! Was not expecting Steven Seagal and Yoshiki (X Japan) to appear on that!

As muxh as people used to hate on his golden elbow/ forearm smash, i really low how even if everyone knows it, you are still going down to it.
Even at a bad quality, I saw this live on Twitter. May coach Miyagino and his stable prosper!
You made a beatifull video out of it Chris, thank you for this perfect summary and tribute.
Greatest of all, really warms my heart every time I see him smile. Genuine and pure soul, ascends time.
You did an excellent job on this video, thank you for sharing as always! I hope you had a great time chilling with our boy Hakuho!
End of a era.
Wow! That was amazing. I think its fair to say we miss him greatly, but excited to see what his future brings us!
Chris, thank you - it was very special to be able to witness this, especially with the commentary and context.
This is fricking AWESOME, thank you so much for taking time to share great content like this. 🙇
It was really unfortunate and disappointing that Asashoryu wasn't able to attend to cut Hakuho's hair. His greatest rival and friend. Instead we got someone like Steven Seagal to have the privilege to cut the hair of one of the greatest Yokozuna of all time.
Do we know if they were friends off the dohyo, and after Asa retired?
But yes, it sucked massively that Asa was not there :(
@@barath4545 Hakuho and Asashoryu grew up together. They were friends and remained friends even after Asashoryu retired. I think Asashoryu is one of the big reasons Hakuho decided to go in to sumo as well. He went first and was successful.
Lol steven paid good money for that opportunity. I chuckled at "martial artist" tag
Steven is a joke
Let's not crap on Seagal! He's a bit of a joke now, but he was a big star in the past, and he has always been a big fan and supporter of the martial arts community. I'm surprised he's a big enough sumo fan to pay the price to snip hair, but if he's a fan and has the money, I'm glad he was there!
THANK YOU ...What an amazing Man this is a video to keep for all time I am honored to see this .
Outstanding report. You're truly the number one Chris.
Amazing video as always, Chris! Thanks a lot for explaining so much interesting information that was hidden for me :)
This is truly sad to see for me. I first started watching when he became Yokozuna. His reign on top was truly legendary
Thank you, Chris! Was waiting for your coverage of the event. Happy to live and see all this
Exquisite package and fitting tribute!
Thanks for bringing this to us. I knew zero about Sumo and Hakuho before I find this channel.
What a singular athlete.
Thank you for this. I have missed Hakuho terribly and now this surely means I can never expect to see him on the dohyo ever again. 😢
You will see him around it though. He will be a grander attendant now with his presence on the clay through his charges. 🤟😎☮️🇦🇺👍
Thank you, Chris. Wonderful to see the bittersweet joy of this day firsthand
1:55 what made me sad while watching the vod of the ceremony was that it felt like some people coming to cut his hair didn't really care and were only there to show themselves
( a lot of them were lost on the dohyo and didn't know which way to go despise so many other having done it just prior to them. they didn't care enough to pay atention.)
Other haire cuter were touching in their display of respect and afection like Harumafuji.
@@bliblivion The honor in being allowed to do it is real high. The only person whining about it is you.
Thank you!
Thankyou so much for this coverage chris, what an honor to witness it
Thank you, Chris, for this coverage & your words. I'm typing this with tears in my eyes. It's hard to believe that sumo goes on without Hakuho but go on it must.
Dieser respektvolle Umgang beim Sumo u. auch anderswo in Japan, ist für mich etwas besonderes, ein Vorbild.
Dank für die Erkläruingen.
It must have been so moving to finally hear his homeland’s anthem being played at the venue. Let’s hope that he is treated with the respect he deserves for his singlehanded dominance in the sport.
Thank you Chris for this amazing coverage and editorial!
I was eagerly awaiting your take on this, Chris.
For people who haven't seen other videos of the event, it wasn't just about the money though this is the main reason for these events and its good to hear from Chris how it all works. But much more than that it was an emotional occasion - Hakuho was fighting back the tears on more than one occasion.
Thank you for bringing this extraordinary event to our screens!
Wonderful insight and video. You really captured the life and history of this moment.
The harumafuji moment of the ceremony was the most emotive and is miss here, anyway, great work.
Hakuho, you are the greatest ❤️ 🙌 ♥️
Fantastic coverage for an even more fantastical career and retirement.
This video was not long enough. Thank you Chris, if it wasn't for you, most of us wouldn't get a good grasp of the whole thing!
Was not expecting Steven Seagal and Yoshiki (X Japan) to appear on that!
