I'm 70. I still get goose-bumps, feeling in my stomach, and my heart goes pitter-patter watching her dance. I think she was the most beautiful, classiest, talented, actress/dancer ever to come out of Hollywood. She would be 102 if alive today. Thank God for film. RIP
I've always thought that Cyd Charisse was so "head to toe" beautiful! She almost looks computer generated in her dance numbers because they are so perfect!
Great dancer and one of the best dancers in the game. Elegant, pretty, strong presence. She got it. Even Kelly and Astaire didn't overshadowed her. That's talent !
I agree. I wish this lithe yet strong body type would make a comeback in Hollywood. Tired of seeing the Kardashian-type huge butt/exaggerated curve look everywhere these days.
The most beautiful, talented, and athletic dancer! She just dominates the screen when she appears! Her shyness, humbleness, and gracefulness attract me, even more, to the ballerina princess!
My favorite dance scene (if I had to pick one), is the one in "Silk Stockings" where she doffs her Russian dress and puts on her Parisian fashions. When Cyd goes behind the sheer curtain and puts her hose on, it is magical. The music, the set, the choreography, the lighting, the clothes and her amazing dancing is a moment in cinema history that will never be repeated. MGM musicals were a time in cinema history that will never be be repeated...
Yes, Cyd's career arc is among the most satisfying in Hollywood's dance department bc she got better and better, especially as a soloist. The title routine from 'Silk Stockings' rings down the curtain of the musicals' Golden Age, the quarter-century from 1932; and her two sizzling cabaret turns in 'Party Girl' (1958) are a wonderful postscript. Her looks also improved: by the Fifties she was in her thirties, with two marriages and two kids, but she was stunningly beautiful. Whether the coldness that came over when she acted, as well as annoying colleagues, was down to shyness or arrogance, it limited her as much as her inability to sing or tap-dance. But when she begins to move in a balletic way, none of that matters. 'Silk Stockings' is her best movie bc it plays on that coldness, in the character of the Soviet commissar, before Fred melts it. She never looked more at ease- more so than in 'The Band Wagon' or the Kelly pictures.
I grew up watching MGM movies and loved Cyd’s dancing But the scene l love most is the one where she and Fred are dancing in the dark in Central Park in Band Wagon. I’m prejudiced bc l’m a native New Yorker! That was a marvelous piece of creative beauty!
Of all the dancers Fred Astaire used as partners, Cyd was my favorite! So happy she was not 'taken down' by the Hollywood trap. Loved their number in The Band Wagon! The best dance number...ever! Loved her madly! ❤
Great video on this very talented actress and yes she had very nice legs. Clearly one of the best dancers in Hollywood and can see why she did so well. Thanks for this great look at her legs, Sorry her talent! Brenton.
Hi Age of Vintage, how are you going? This is an absolutely standout look of Cyd Charisse. One of the most brilliant, stunning, elegant & classy women of The Golden Years of Hollywood. She is one of my most favourite of all Hollywood dancers. She paired up with two of the most brilliant dancers of that era, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. They both have been mentioned as saying, she is one of the greatest dancers they ever had the pleasure of partnering. She was brilliant in her dance sequence with Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain, & Brigadoon. She also starred in The Band Wagon & Silk Stockings with Fred Astaire. She was married to her second husband Tony Martin for 60 years. On June 16th 2008 she was admitted to hospital after an apparent heart attack, sadly she passed away the following day she was 86 years old. RIP THE GREAT CYD CHARISSE, a sad day indeed. Cyd had the most gloriously shapely legs! Tall, statuesque but not a great beauty. She really couldn't sing. Though when she danced, she was so graceful that all eyes were on her! Oh, did i mention her beautiful curvy body? Wow!
Cud Charisse had the best legs ever. I had a chance to work with her, & her husband, Tony Martin, back in 1975. We were the same height & build, but her knees were at least 4” higher up her legs than mine, which made her look much taller. It was that knee placement that made her legs so special. BTW, she nearly endlessly soaked in a bath & exercised. She really worked to keep that body.
She was a real pro. She was dedicated to her craft, & she worked at it daily. She had one son by her first husband &, if I remember correctly, one son by Tony Martin. I did PR, & Press parties, but outside of that, I didn’t spend time with her. As I say, she had a routine that she stuck to. I did, however, spend a fair amount of time with Tony Martin. There were other great dancers, like Ann Miller and Eleanor Powell, but no one measured up to Cyd's beauty and grace; she moved like no other. My favorite: Silk Stockings.
Although the performances she did in the Dean Martin Matt Helm series "The Silencers" can be looked at as a bit over the top and campy today - she being shot to death after a musical and dance number - she was still remarkable and dazzling to watch!
I spent much of my life studying the dancers on the silver screen. Cyd Charisse was the most wonderful ballet/torch dancer and exuded the most sex appeal of any of the famous dancers. Yet she apparently was not able to TAP DANCE. For this reason my all time favorite dancers were Ginger Rogers and the often overlooked Vera Ellen. Their versatility and physical strengths along with vibrant personalities (which Cyd did not have) lit up their dance performances like no other dancers ever have.
Eleanor Powell was the one who really did it all. She did not 'come from the slightly clunky world of tap dancing.' She studied ballet from the age of six, half Cyd's age, was schooled by Fokine and only learned to tap when she was 16. Ellie's control over her numbers was absolute and her career unique in movies.
