- Custom made two tier grate system. I had commissioned a local fabricator to design and install this grate system. This gives me a ton more smoking space and it looks great! Please email this guy, he made it for me. nmarchetti91@gmail.com

Really nice job, and absolutely ingenious to build those removable side brackets that hold everything, but easily pop out. Very impressive, hats off to your metalworking pal.
Absolutely awesome system you have there. The thought of making those brackets where they can be put in and taken out is absolutely genius. This is exactly what I'm going to have done for my New Braunfels smoker. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas because it is the best I've seen so far.
I have a New Bruanfels Black Diamond. I'd love to see pictures if you get a NBBD made.
I am always skeptical when I see the words "The Most Amazing" before anything but you and your welder knocked this one out of the park. This is such an awesome idea for this smoker and I love that it didn't require any permanent modifications to the unit itself. Ill be doing this this week for mine!
I am surprised they don't offer this as an upgrade.
WOW this is the most absolute best mod for an Oklahoma Joe highland smoker I’ve seen and I’ll definitely be contacting this guy ASAP thanks for sharing this one
Best mod I've seen so far. I definitely have to do this to my smoker.
Did this Mod to my smoker, thank you and thank your welder for this genius idea. So Simple to make brackets.
Nice . This is a genius Modification
Not going to lie I wish these side brackets were mass market and I could buy these this is so smart!
Great rack idea! I am going to "borrow" this idea and build it out myself as I am a welder. But I am going to go one step further and put an upper lip on the sides so the rack can slide out and not tip forward. It seems like a pain to have to hold the rack up by the handle so it doesn't fall forward and dump all the food on you. LOVE the idea just taking adding to it a bit.
Good idea, in all honesty that has NEVER been a problem for me, but it certainly can't hurt.
I'd gladly pay you for a build of materials list and measurements.. I work in a shop and could have a buddy weld this up..
Scott Quinlin I was thinking the same exact thing as well as a another handle at the rear so the whole tray could be lifted off with food on it..
I appreciate this video. I've already emailed him everything is in the works. The only thing I added was a lip on the top rack bracket to keep the rack from tipping over when you slide it out to rotate the food.
Make sure you post some pictures when it is complete!
I have emailed the guy twice in the past two weeks & got no response. How long did it take for him to reply to you?
Heavy Metal Kennels Hi Heavy, I just emailed him and it took him sometime to get back to me also. I will double check with him.
Vacation Getaways Would you mind sending the measurements of the brackets and the smoker grates? For the Highland model, Thank you
He did say it was crazy busy
Very cool! He should sell those. I would buy one!
Thanks for the video, the no weld support brackets and grates are ingenious! Market these designs, I would buy them for my Highlander!
The fabricator is making grates for many grills. Email him (his email is above) and get a quote.
@@VacationGetaways I don't see his email listed, did he stop taking orders?
@@kiltedswinebbq nmarchetti91@gmail.com
He's been busy the last month or so because he was working on mine. I have the Oklahoma Joe Longhorn Reverse Flow and my two tier grate arrived yesterday. I installed it last night and it fits like a glove. Looks like it could have come straight from the factory. This welder is pretty good. I sent him a few photos and after going back and forth a few times on different measurements, he knocked it out of the park. He was easy to work with and the shipping process went smooooooth.
Nate Payne So he was able to modify it for your reverse flow, no issues?
@ tomatogod1, No problems whatsoever. I seasoned the smoker with the new racking system in it today and plan to cook on it for the first time next weekend. I wish I could figure out how to post the photos I took of it installed.
Nate Payne could you email me the pics? I would really like to see how it came out. tomatogod69@gmail.com
@tomatogod1 I just emailed the pics. Tell me what you think.
Can I see those pics too. I have a reverse flow longhorn. quantum39002@yahoo.com
Freaking genius!!! Love how non invasive of the original design is, you can just put the orginal grills back like nothing happened.
One of the simplest and best mods I've seen. Thanks for sharing.
Great idea on the double rack! Only thing id be worried about is that top rack falling forward because of the weight. Should have him tack weld a flat piece at the top too make it more like a channel that the top rack slides in and out of.
Oh my goodness this is amazing
Two thumbs up on the racks mod. Absolutely great idea. I just got my Ok Joe Longhorn last weekend. I think I will pull my welder out an weld me up a set of racks for mine.
It seemed like I was watching a segment on 60 minutes with Andy Rooney.
He did present some excellent ideas for mods. Hopefully, he'll follow up with the results.
Wow!!! Very impressed with the mod. Hats off to the welder and keeping the smoker versatile.
Kid did a great job on that set up.
Really like the double rack system.
My fabricator did an out of this world job on it. As a matter of fact he IS SWAMPED with builds..
He is now making builds for other brands of smokers.
Thats pretty cool man. Only thing I would do to it is put a couple pieces of steel over the top rack shelf so you can slide it out and it will stay up. That way you can slide it out and let go of it and have both hands to work with.
The Highlander? "There can be only one!"
Haha Every single damn time I see a smoking vid with an Oklahoma joe Highlander I say that in my head. I just bought one and I will totally abuse that saying.
I must admit, I have watch many guys on RUclips do their modifications on their Oklahoma Joe, but this by far is some of the best that I see, I really wish your guy was selling this on Amazon or Facebook or someway I could get in touch with him because I would really like to have a set of those Grates, that is awesome....🔥🔥💯💯💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥💯💯🔥
His email address is in the description, but from what I hear he is pretty much non responsive. BTW: I LOVE the addition, I can cook a ton more smaller items and I can remove a grate and cook a turkey.
The person you found to do that work is about to make a nice fortune off of that design as soon as he is able to to mass produce let me know I would love that setup for my Longhorn
I would email him, he will take dimensions and built to suite.
Van I have His email address I would love this set up....
Robert Frasier Its in the notes above.
Would love a setup like tgat for my landmann get him to mass produce!
Does he have a website
Get rid of the foil below your grates and get the smoke baffle system. It works great to move the smoke to the other end
I just installed the gasket on my brand new Highland. I hope I didn't waste $15 because the door doesn't shut flush any longer. I knew I should have waited for a few more smokes before I decided to install. I tied the doors down in the hope that they'll settle a bit, but I didn't have much smoke loss before, so I'm probably will end up taking the gasket off.
I have a pit Exactly like yours. Now I have been hunting for a welder that will do the grills and build the attachments like the ones you have made for yours. But no luck so far. I cant take the Pit to the Welding shop and if the Welders come to my house to work on it.. the Cost is just too much to consider. So, I will wait and think of the extra grill you have with envy, lots of envy. Great Video and Thank You for posting! phil
The fabricator was selling them but got very busy. Check his email in the comments.
Very cool, but they do make a rack setup just like that you can buy. My only issue is it’s just a mild steel rack..it’s gonna rust where as the factory grates are coated and makes for easy cleaning
Super bad ass! Definitely going to try and steal that MOD.
Also, I did the calcs using a smoker design tool and for the dia of the stack, it needs to be 25” long, not 15” long. The alternative is to increase the dia of the stack to 6” that’s 15” long/high - but that requires doing more cutting and welding than just lengthening the existing stack.
So sounds like a design defect with Smokey Joe?
You Sir, found a smart young Lad. Great ingenuity, looks like there's even enough room to put a piece of steel plate as a deflector on the the right hand one, to take the place of the foiled grate. I'll be duplicating this for my pellet smoker. Mind if I use you as my source of information when I do a video on it down the road? Old School~
Great Idea. Thanks for posting the video
Will put an update on your smoker? I really like your mod. Another good mod could be a top half rack. So you could cook big meats at the same time. In your next video are you able to give us a breakdown of dimension? Looks awesome thanks for your video. Cheers
Like the idea good job, planning something like that tanks for sharing 👍😎
Well done! I’m surprised OK Joe hasn’t “borrowed” your idea.
That is brilliant! Love it! Thank you for sharing
Thanks for the video, that is the best modification for the Oklahoma Highland that I've ever seen! I would like to have the specs on that if I could sometime!
That is genius and you are not just stuck with it you could go back if you so choose to. One question though could you or he provide the schematics or so the pieces for top and bottom. You two have a winner.
Awesome!! Thanks for this great video and what an awesome mod! Deff doing this on my Highland.
That is a really awesome mod. Im going to see if i can get that made.
your welder guy should start a business making these
I made some thing different
but my welding is not good
That's a good idea on the trays.
So do you still have the measurements of how he made them? I’m making these for my brother in law cuz he is having the same problem as well. Pls and thank you
Bbq smoker mods. Com.. Sells very similar rack.. I have them on my highland.. I love them
@@JamesLKing-bq2cb check all the mods on the site you mentioned, nothing similar to this mod
@@kockynehe7793 yes they do. It's called the extension rack
Nice Job question did the gentlemen that made the brackets also make the new slide in BBQ racks?
Yes he did, he made the whole insert.
It's have been 5 years from the time you made this video, what are your thoughts now, how does it cook?
Nicely done sir
Executed to perfection. fairly simple.. very effective and versatile setup
I'm actually in the process of doing this to my smoker!! This video has confirmed that it will amazing lol, thanks for the video
Awesome mod!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ask your welder if he is willing to build one and ship it to me in Arizona
SWEEET MOD!
Chicken parts
Cow parts
Piggy parts!
You two fellas should have got a patent for your design. Know guess what they sale this same exact set up on line!
Anyone know if I can use the bottom rack for 10lb pork butts and a brisket on the top or will they not fit for the highland big cool upgrade???
Nicely done!!
That is awesome!!!!!! I'm a welder, and I've made a custom wood box to the fire box, and been looking what other mods I could do this is a great idea, as I just bought my smoker(instead of making my own) and so far I think this will be the best "add-a-tray "mod. Thanks for the idea!
You have dimensions on the device?maybe a video on it?
@@yashee96 bbqsmokermods.com/oem-smoker-mods-by-brand/oklahoma-joe-s/highland/bigcooktm-expantion-rack-system-for-ok-joe-highland-by-total-controlr-bbq.html; they sell this thing for $165. Sounds like yet another reason to bribe your local welder with smoked ribs, etc, for far less.
Vacation Getaways I was wondering if you could measure the space between the bottom grate and the top grate & space between the top grate and the top of the smoker for me? Wanting to know how much clearance their is between grates & also the top of smoker. The welder guy got back with me but I figured these questions would be easier for you to answer before I have him make me one. Thanks again.
There is a mod company called bbqsmokermods selling a similar system online but I'm sure they aren't near the quality of these.
You're a fool to not send it back and get them to replace it ! That is on YOU
Would it be possible to get the measurements of the brackets so I can make some for mine?.. I would even pay you for a build of materials list and measurements.. thank you, please.
Nice 👌.... but only if they had the black instead of red color for the leaks
im curious how these racks have worked out for you? it seems like a mod worth doing. how does it cook when at full capacity?
Thanks for the idea. I'm definitely doing this. How's briskets do on the both upper and lower racks?
So did you revert back to the original exhaust?
Awesome mod. Genius
This is awesome
i love it the two slide outs. how much would your welder charge for the set up. i'm in California please let me know. if not charging would mind sharing the dimension so i can have this for my OK joe.
You would have to ask him, his email is listed above in the description. He does nice work.
Just needs a groove to hold the racks in place when slid out
Man something I've learned trying to mod cheaper grills to work right is you end up in the end spending just about as much money as it would to just spend the money on a quality grill that will last you a lifetime...... I've spent so much money on my cheaper bought grills trying to get them airtight...... I finally got frustrated and took the plunge and finally just spent the money on a quality built smoker and couldn't be happier...... it gets used at least 5 times a week because it's a joy to cook on......
That’s pretty awesome!
Wow! Awesome mod
Holy sh*t how am I just now seeing this! I this set up now!
I LOVE the concept, but it appears to me that you had to remove the exhaust intake mod to make room for the second shelf. Would it have been better to make to upper deck 3 inches shorter on the left side to keep the exhaust intake back down at the lower level where you had it? I know that exhaust mod works afa making it a better smoker, I think I would have integrated the left bracket to also hold the exhaust pipe while supporting the upper rack. Again, not raining on the parade, just curious as to why you decided to lose that mod? Either way, I love the idea 100%, nice work to the fab guy for the clean and accurate work done!
The fabricator had made a square exhaust port to fit in the empty space but I had air flow issues with the mod so I removed it altogether. With the mod on when I closed the firebox the wood would smolder, when the mod was removed the wood would continue to burn.
I wonder if a small blower would have helped that? Just bouncing some ideas off ya lol, I'm thinking on these same mods. The concept is just awesome!!
You're a genius.
Very good jabs
I was wondering if it’s the same dimension’s for the older Oklahoma joe model with the gold plaque
I really don't know the answer to that, this does have the gold colored name plate.
Does "your" metal guy make and sell those rack systems? I also have a highland..thanks
I would love to have specs for this mod
I'm a welder
I want to learn to weld so I can fix the fire box together and then weld it to the smoker.
Love the rack system! That welder should have put a patent on the design.
I was wondering what he did with the exhaust vent ? He said he was going to have something made but never showed it.
Yes he offered to do the exhaust but i decided not to..
It's just a variant of something already available...

Amazing 👏 😮
I would like to know the dimensions of the grates
Incredible mod.
Awesome
Dudes nuts
Did he build the non welding set up or did you purchase them from somewhere? Also where can I get the 2 top and bottoms grates you are using?
The fabricator built everything. If you need anything email him (which is listed above).
Nice Mod
Can you please post the measurements?
Lavalock now sells this set up.
Yes, I saw.. They bought some components from my fabricator, but I am sure they are making their own now.
Im emailing this man Asap.!!!
What a cool mod...👌
love the set up. exactly what i want. how much for the brackets? please let me know. just bought my grill from wal-mart.
His email is in my comment section, reach out to him.
Dude. That's Badass
What’s the distance between the 2 racks I’m wondering if you have enough clearance on the top and bottom rack to cook multiple briskets .
The top clearance is only about 4" not enough for a second row of briskets. That's why I mad the shelves removable so I can smoke briskets on the bottom, maybe three or four, and when I need to do chicken and ribs I put the upper shelf in to cook two rows of ribs and chicken.
I purchased 2 from the Original fabricator I then saw them on BBQ Mods without the Handles. Did They Take the Idea? Or did the original fabricator sell them the idea or patent?
I introduced bbq Mods to the fabricator. I am not sure where he stands with them but i think he lost interest in re-selling them. I believe BBQ Mods are now manufacturing themselves elsewhere.
@@VacationGetaways I was just making sure his idea/design wasn't Hijacked from him or he was taken advantage of. If it was me that came up with that Idea I would of applied for a Patent....
Where can I get the grate mod from in the uk ?
What are the dimensions and the measurements for your upper rack that you modified
Like others, that's the best mod I've seen. Can you please tell me how much the racks cost you to have made? Thx!
Hi I had left the builders name in the description with his email... I know he is busy but I hope he helps you.. Thanks for watching.
I found this on bbqsmokermods.com I was ecstatic when I found it..it’s perfect for this smoker...
Rey Hernanandez that is awesome, Do you know what the name of this is?
