Hey, thank you so much for this video I have been needing this, but every time I drop from a hang, my lower bag begins to rage in pain. Do you have any advice?
I bought a pull up bar and have been doing a simple one minute hang every morning for over a year. It's a simple way to improve posture and virtually eliminate back and neck pain.
Ok but the smile while hanging from the stairs 😂 Ngl you definitely motivated me to start dead hangs. I asked for a pull up bar for Mother’s Day and after 2 months I can finally hang for 30ish seconds at a go. Lately I’ve been getting bored and swinging on it though. Thanks for inspiring us ❤
ive been incorporating hanging into my routines lately and it's that one exercise most people like to neglect but one that yields many benefits and improves your overall calisthenics progress
I started active hanging a bit over a week ago. I grab a stair above everytime I go up or down and hold myself for as long as possible while activating my shoulders and back. I can hang like 30 seconds now instead of the 15-20 sec a week ago. Also, because of the not so ergonomic shape of a stair I lost skin on my hands each time hanging for the first 4 days, but now its fine. Pros of a stair: Better finger strength because you cant grip it like a bar Cons: It hurts the first days (but at some point you dont feel it that much) and if your fingers get sweaty you obviously start loosing grip and slip down.
I really like hanging from a much thicker bar. Not only do you get the benefits to improved shoulder mobility and spine health, but it challenges grip way more. Thin pullup bars are still good, and get the job done. But a thicker bar you can just barely wrap your hand fully around is considerably harder. I remember when I initially worked up to 90 sec from a normal bar. Then, when I tried the thicker bar, even 35-40 sec was challenging.
Been going to a park a few times per week. At first couldn't lift bodyweight at all (carrying extra weight). Today could lift feet off ground for a few seconds, multiple times. I like the feeling of release in my upper back.
My max is 7:53, and i can do 4 min anytime even without working out for weeks, and around 6min if i want to but above that is very very rare and it takes everything.
I started doing dead hangs throughout the day...maybe 20-30 times...but just for 5-10 seconds. The stretch feels great and my shoulders have been much less tender lately. I really don't think you need to dead hang for 30-60 seconds. I think that would wear me out.
Should we keep our shoulders down or let them get close to our ears? I've seen plenty different opinions regarding this topic, would love to know Daniel's
I prefer to hang in one hand and switch grips back and forth. It feels great swinging from hand to hand grip. I do that for half of my time hanging to switch it up. it get boring just hanging there not doing anything.
Anyone else like behind the back shoulder dislocates with a stick? I do tons of chins and dips so a lot of internal rotation of the shoulders .... deadhangs and disllocates feel so therapeutic
I tried them and got a mad stretch where I needed it.. but went to hard too fast , progressing by measuring hand position on the stick. Injured myself and couldnt do anything for two weeks. So I think it's safer with a band rather than a stick
@@yahyajammeh 100% ot really depends on shoulder mobility mine is not as bad as i claim it to be i suppose but it something i work on even my dips i try to always go lower and lower past 90°
@@Cdfitness90 my thoracic mobility/posture isn't great, and corresponding shoulder issues.....but dips aren't a problem going very low. The dead hangs really are superb if you suffer from shoulder impingement
You can stand at a door way raise your arms pretend your holding a bar and just holding gently lean into the doorway. Or go gym use latpulldown machine put very light weight n just hold the bar .
Should I use to hang a message to gain strength in my shoulder again? I was in a motorcycle crash and my left shoulder has suffered the consequences a little and I want to get back to working out but without hurting myself further
@@YRO. No. You can hang even if you disengage your core just like how you can do pull-ups with your low back arching because your core is disengaged. Did you hear him say hanging is good for your core? Clearly not because you don't need core strength to hang.
How about underhand grip? I've heard it said it's even better for flexibility, it's a lot less comfortable for me to stay in underhand grip hangs for the same duration
I'm 58 yr , start did dead hang 4 month ago and aproximatey last month i feel pain in right shoulder so cannot doing dead hang again. I dont know this is cause by dead hang or not. Anybody got some problem ?
i feel like my lower back is “pulling away” from my top body! i thought it was my spine decompressing at first, but it started feeling painful the longer i stayed on. is this a bad sign?
Anybody knows If my bar It’s not completely straight can develop any health issue ? Because I got my boxing bag there (hanging on a corner side) and It tends to blend a lil bit Thxs💪🏼
Is it okay if I try to increase my hanging gradually, right now I am doing 80s after few weeks of training calisthenics. I am thinking to make it a 2minutes. Not sure if this is healthy but I wish I could do it longer.
I cant hang longer than 30secs because my hands are too slippery. Should i just do more sets to get to 5mins? Or should i try to force myself to reach 45-60secs?
@@joshuakeelsmusic hmmm idk I wouldn’t say hanging helped prevent injuries for my shoulders I started with hanging and got to 50 second one arm hang and now both my shoulders are badly hurt (not from the hangs)
@@nathaniel5151 you may have to do what I'm currently doing and strictly do hangs as a workout until the shoulders completely heal. It's tough not to incorporate other exercises but I believe it's the only way.

"Stop making excuses and find solutions."
Excellent advice.
Sounds like very fatherly advice 😅
Tree climbing does wonders for grip strength.
"You're only as strong as your weakest excuse."
That should be on a coffee mug. @FitnessFAQ I'd buy that
Very broad quote. Fitness gurus targetijg vunerable or clueless people. This is why the fitness industry has a bad rep with only a few gems.
For all of you working on this and still struggling like me, hang in there.

Same here. It has saved me back pains which are common at my line of work. So simple, so important

These stretches are life changing corrects posture and a nice spinal decompression
I’ve used to hang in my training all the time. Great for shoulder mobility and health. Great video Dan. Thank you.

Deadhangs are a key to life as you get older
My calluses: 3 minutes, that's all.
That’s pretty much how it goes.

Pool noodle around a normal bar
Dead hangs fixed by more than a year long shoulder problem. It was so bad I was convinced to go for a surgery.
Nice job! They currently seem to be fixing my forearms.
Rock climbers have amazing hanging ability - even with a few fingers! Appears to be lots of crossover benefits between rock climbing and calisthenics.
Rock climbing is calisthenics in the same way running and swimming are.
Brilliant as always. To the point , genuine advice
Solid advice bro. I work in the AV industry so I’m surrounded by trussing. Plenty of hanging bars!
Well said...and well Demonstrated!
This is so timely! I was wondering about how to start.
am i the only one who saw bro's smile while hanging under the staircase?
Helped me with lower back pain better than anything else. Including inversion tables.

Love your work mate 👍
Yes its true
You had me at “grip strength”
What I like to do sometimes is a split second pull upwards and then release. Zero weight on the palms that way
Excellent advice thank you

Allow your shoulders to competely relax and you will loosen those muscles near your shoulder blades.

I do that for half of my time hanging to switch it up. it get boring just hanging there not doing anything.

i did 25-30sec/ set, so far the best i can but still got the benefit

Activate scapula or just let it all loose and pull on the joints?
loose
Do you hang and try and relax your full body? Or do you keep tension in your abdominal muscles?
What's up??
Nothing much, just hanging around 😂😂

Are you relaxing your body or do you engage all muscles while hanging?
Thanks

Had to start using hand cream after gym cause the amount of and i have tough skin😂
when i hang my lumbar just plin plin plon

But what about the scapula, is it true that slouching / not engaging it while deadhanging is bad for back (bulged disc)?
