if anyone's wondering what it means at 0:24, she says "私は日本語があまり話せないので、 コンピューターが翻訳してくれました。" which means "I don't speak much Japanese, my PC translated it" and dw about your accent f4mi, it's fine ;)
I know this is gonna sound kinda racist, but, she kinda sounded Japanese with her accent. Now that I think about she sounds like my old therapist that was from Mexico… that still wouldn’t explain the PAL GameCube though..
3:12 That image of Hamtaro is the Japanese cover of Hamtaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak, which was released on the GBA around the same time (2002-2003). Fun fact: one of the producers of Hamtaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak is Shigeru Miyamoto, though the game was not developed by Nintendo.
Honestly from a technical standpoint a web browser is what makes the most sense for this kind of program, not only from a cost/time prospective but also from a features prospective. Also to recover the full browser out of it i think some complex reverse engieneering needs to be put into this, it can be as easy modifiy a few bytes here and there to enable unused code pieces. But i think that it's very likely that the code to run all the browser features was left entirely out of the disk, so in that case either a new browser must be created from scratch or an existing some (able to run on gc level hw) must be ported
PSO's web browser is interesting, as it's a completely different kind of browser. If you look in the files there's an INI file that has a few settings, with options for using a real keyboard, setting the background color, the homepage, and even enabling Javascript and plugins! I haven't personally tried tweaking it though, since the game encrypts what webpages you can go on in the memory card it seems. The browser was only supposed to be used for purchasing a Hunter's License, AKA the sub.
The PSO browser simply works with keyboards. I used mine while setting up IP/DNS settings etc. all the time. Super cool about JS though! Had no idea that was theoretically possible👍🏻
I never knew this. Learning so much stuff from leaks and randomly from this. I truly wonder how different things would be if stuff like this actually came out and wasn't shelved to the dark corners of the interwebs
Hello fellow Nintendo Gamecube Soft e-Catalog 2003 Spring disk owner!! I just saw your video through a Reddit post and was like "I OWN THAT DISK!!" I'm so glad you're mentioning ConnorRentz's article on it, I also referred to their article when I dumped the disk over on the Internet Archive - if anyone else wants to check out the demo disk contents as well. Uh I dunno if I should link it because spam filter but it's there I promise. Just one correction: this disk came with RUNE 2 (known as Lost Kingdoms 2 overseas), Pokemon Box, AND Family Stadium 2003. The info can be found going through the Wayback Machine on Nintendo's Japanese website. Also funny story I also didn't mean to get this disk (I wanted a CIB copy of RUNE 2's demo OTL) but, it was so neat to learn about the browser within so it was all worth it.
Fami. Hopefully you recovered from your accident and it doesn't sound like you haven't missed a beat. This is a neat find the presentation is kewwwwwl.
There's an "encyclopedia" program for the GameBoy Advance called Pocket Professor Kwik Notes Vol. 1 that does something similar to this. It uses a html-like system to encode all its pages and link them together. It also occasionally uses it to embed images of a custom format.
Just came across your channel... Absolutely love how your videos have sporadic meming, but it's not over the top, and it's still very informational!! Great work!
Personal story about 2:17, I had a Wii modchipped as a kid since I was living in Malaysia at the time and wanted to play a game I had gotten visiting Australia. The system settings had broken exactly like that. Didn't scare me at all, just infuriated me when I had found it cos I knew I would not be getting that console online
I know I’m not the first to say it. That Hamtaro image is a gameboy advance box art for the “Ham Ham Heart Break” game. It’s the third game in that series of Hamtaro games, and the west only ever got the 2nd and 3rd entries. Although Pal regions got another entry in the series, I can’t easily find the Japanese names for these games. Funnily enough, the Nintendo of Japan website still has a page for that game. It came out in May 2002. Nintendo published a bunch of those. Perhaps it was meant to be a part of the trailers or previews on the disc but they decided not to include it.
2:07 Ahahaha I hadn't heard about the Wii Opera browser error messages. Between this and the Wii Startup Disc, i am SO here for stories that the Wii was just a gamecube with a wifi adapter stapled to the bottom and duct-taped with a piece of lined notebook paper with "Wii" written on it in sharpie.
And you've gained another sub! Cool content, in regards to actually making the browser, it would probably require rebuilding the source from a rip like this via reverse engineering, then expanding. Major theme there would be that whoever takes on the task would need at least the Gamecube's development software, though I presume it could be done with some of the homebrew tools too.
I love how in the pinned comment, she said Bretzel at first, and people thought it was wrong, but here in germany where the pretzel is invented it actually is spelled that way lmao
(2:52) I find it interesting that you didn't resize your Safari window to mimic the viewport of the hidden Web browser you were talking about, as responsive Web design didn't exist in the 2000s.
I was impressed too! By the way, you would be amazed by the fact that many modern games run UI on HTML files using web-browser based technologies such as Coherent Gameface.
If you looked at the back of the packaging for one of these things, it has a disclaimer that says something along the lines of “This Broadband adapter alone won’t connect you to the internet!” Like if they were planning on releasing a web browser that could, since it also advertised needing a online-ready game beforehand.
Many like to make fun of Nintendo and online functions. But if you look at things since the NES or rather the Famicom, you will notice that the addons for internet use were already released back then. The only problem is that the stuff, which was actually quite good at the time, never made it outside of Japan
A little add on! Sega actually made a very basic one for pso ep 1 and 2. It’s hidden in network setting and advertisement but it’s there. It just wasn’t made by Nintendo! It’s similar to how the ps5 has one, u just can’t access it unless under certain conditions or needs in a piece of software. Like needing it to sign into services like Spotify to pay.
Gurl I just found out your channel and I love it. I live in Japan and I'm also into collecting some niche stuff, if you ever need something from here hit me up, be glad to help you.
Great video, did never know you could even hook game cube to broadband internet You think you could share this demo disc? 4:03 - SegaNet having a quoted endorsement from Fred Durst, lead -whiner- singer of Limp Bizkit, is about as 1999 as you can get. lol I'm not surprised that the demo discs are HTML-based. Many game demo discs for PC also used HTML front-end. Around that time, at least in the US, there was a demand for HTML programming as more and more companies were finally pushing to have an online presence. If you weren't fluent in HTML, you couldn't even get a job repairing home computers because they wanted someone who could also design/maintain a website. Also, in the late-90s, HTML was often called "the programming language of the future." 🤣 HTML was easy enough to write, since you could use literally any text editor on any platform, and your code was saved as a text file, for easy transport via floppy discs, tape backup, or dialup internet.
