  • This video is to show the basics of soldering. I know a lot of people want to build a quad but are held back because they don't know how to solder. This video is to show that soldering is easy and fun once you know the basics.

    This video is hands down the BEST soldering video for quads I've seen. Very detailed.
    Another tip: If you're new to building quads buy yourself a cheap $99 build and start there.
    I made the mistake of buying lightweight high quality components ($$$) from the start without the soldering skills to back it up. I bought those components 6 months ago and have yet to fix that quad because I want it to be PERFECT. If you start with a cheap build you can just get it built and fix your bad joints as you go, then save the quality components for when you're more comfortable with soldering.
    Since I spent nearly $400 on my build I'm buying a soldering practice kit and getting some experience before I finish. Would have liked to be flying already though!

    Great demo. I'm a complete novice when it comes to soldering. Your video will be of great help, to me, because you explain WHY you use a certain technique, rather than most videos that barely bother to give a clear visual demonstration. Well done.

    Damn it. Best video about soldering that i saw in last few days.. I order equipment from Ebay and Alibaba and for now just looking around RUclips for tutorials. Here things are explained in understandable way, directions are straightforward and exact. Can tell this is work of professional (familiar on how to pass knowledge too). Many thanks mister. Good job

    Great video, thanks for posting.
    I think most who solder would say your work is certainly more than good enough, but for the next level, you'd want to use much less solder. Those large globs on the pads completely obscure the wire strands. The idea is to tin the pads, not deposit a mound of solder
    The reason for your "bad joint" at 11:50 is that you didn't use extra flux on the big solder glob or the wire. Solder will flow towards flux, so you want flux the wire end, then heat the solder glob on the board until it melts, then bring the fluxed wire end to the glob. The solder will flow up the fluxed wire with good wetting.
    And despite the shiny surface, that joint is NOT a good one. You can see @ 12:32 very clearly that the wire isn't wetted. Look near the insulation on that wire. You see that space between the solder mound and the actual wire strands? THAT is lack of wetting, and that is bad soldering joint.
    Easily remedied, though. Stick a little high quality solder wick on top of the mound and melt a bit. The flux in the wick will give good wetting when re-melted and you'll wick up some of the mountain of solder-- kill two birds with one stone.

      agreed, too much tin is used. You should be able to see the strands in the wires. Saves weight too ;-)

    Out of like 15-20 youtube "build" videos, yours is in top 3. Seems everybody who built a drone after 2015, thinks they are an expert: Disgusting dirty tips. Blobs of solder. Mashing the wire down. Heating for 10+ sec.
    Congrats for doing an excellent tutorial - sadly one of the few.

    The best way to learn how to solder, is to buy some cheap DIY kits and practice soldering. Flux the wick for best results

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 5 лет назад

      Darryl 603 Quality wick is already heavily fluxed. I recommend MG Chemicals wick, it’s better than any brand I’ve tried, even much more famous brands like Chem-Wick.
