Black Dwarf
Doom metal doesn't necessarily mean anti-Christian. Black Sabbath, being the archetype from which the genre grew, tended to be a lot more Christian than they at first appeared. Candlemass certainly had overtones of Christianity. They also explored a lot of fantasy and supernatural subjects. Their first three records, particularly, are classics, the first being my favorite (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus). The "heavy" element here is the atmosphere, the downtuned guitars, and the slow pace.
Candlemsss "candlemsss" is my personal fav. songs like "Black dwarf", "Copernicus" & "Witches" are bloody brill 😁🤘😁
Yeah I'd love to see their reaction to a song like After Forever. Black Sabbath could be a lot preachier than people realise

Trouble was one of the first , heaviest and greatest doom metal bands... their lyrics on their first three LPs were overtly Christian ... doom metal bands tend to turn to religious imagery because it is so powerful

Doom metal is basically Black Sabbath worship. Slower tempo, thick guitar tone, and usually gives a sense of foreboding, or shall I say, impending doom ;) Candlemass in particular is in the "Epic Doom" style, featuring operatic vocals and more a focus on fantasy and myth. Among one of my favorite bands, personally. And requests as usual:

This song means a lot to me now that It kinda has a meaning to me personally
I had a young friend around my Age who had became one of my close homies around my neighborhood and he was a very Kind hearted Respectful guy his life was very tough not easy he sadly was hard on Alcohol and Crystal Meth and sadly He passed away this year in January and what's crazy he was not a Metal guy but he was very open minded and this was one of the last songs I ever showed him and I still remember that day chilling in his room having some beers talking and he liked it
Also I dedicate this to him because I was almost Homeless in the end of December last year and he had Told me that if I end up having no where to go I can stay with him for as lonh as I needed while I looked for a place I was so happy to hear cuz I was struggling a lot at that time and I never had a friend that would do that for me that's how I knew he was a real one and he truly cared for me too fortunately I found a place and didn't wound up in the Streets but still I appreciated the support of him he's had my back so many times man I miss him Dearly :(
But I'm happy at least to know he's no longer Suffering....

A fine song! ~ These guys were the first headlining band i'd ever seen over at L'Amours, Brooklyn, NY when they toured for the Ancient Dreams album. They were really good live. ~ I'm very glad you both reacted to this. Nightfall lp is certainly one of their best.

One of my favorite metal bands EVER! It's dark, it's brooding, yet it's spiritual. Not to mention the sick grooves!

Oceans Of Slumber are peripheral friends of mine from when I lived in Houston. Great band, And glad they're growing very quickly the last few years.

Brent, its real cool to see "young-ans" listening to bands I grew up with (and were somewhat obscure at the time, let alone after over 30 years) Epicus Doomicus Metallicus came out my junior year in HS ... and this one came out my senior year :).

Doom metal essentially is defined as slow tempo, crunching dark riffs and clean vocals. The themes are usually about death and religion. Black sabbath is generally considered the original doom band.
Drugs and misery are common themes too.

Further, doom metal has evolved over the years into a few different approaches. Some are kind of stoner-friendly bands that have long and loosely constructed jams, while others have incorporated death metal or melodic death metal elements. Vocals can be anywhere from cleans to bellowing death growls. The pace, though, tends to always be slower, with bass-heavy lumbering riffs and ominous melodies.
Hell yessssss!!!!! Candlemass is Mighty Epic Doom!!!! I am so happy you two have reacted and reviewed this. I highly recommend "Well of Souls" based on Raiders of the Lost Ark film. Love you Vin and Sori.
holly molly. after 25+ years of listening metal, my taste for that genre is very thinned out today, and candlemass is one of my favorite bands ever. for me they are the definition of EPIC doom metal. epic massive heaviness in sound and lyrics. amazing pick guys (they have huge arsenal of amazing songs and albums, but this era with messiah on vocals is the golden era of this band), and amazing video and reaction. cheers for this.

Draconian - Death, Come Near Me
For some dreary doom metal, I'd check out Saint Vitus. Gets angry, gets solemn, always slow and heavy. However, you'd have to do a song for each singer to compare their styles. Dying Inside with their singer Scott "Wino" Weinrich (who has his own bands, all of which are amazing). There's a good live video of that one on RUclips. Then there's One Mind with Scott Reagers. Then with Christian L there's Planet of Judgement.

What a nice song. Thanks to you I'm discovering that I like black metal very much. Had a first listen at Batushka, Satyricon and now Candlemass. I never really tried out black metal but I'm in. Besides black metal I love technical melodic metal. There for I suggest Allegaeon: Proponent for sentience III the Extermination. The musicianship will really surprise you.

Candlemass has several different iterations (all of them great.) This song is from the Messiah Marcolin era. You have to check out Epicus Doomicus Metallicus -- probably the greatest metal ep ever. Also the song Gallows End would probably interest you. That was the song that kind of put them on the map. I remember it actually getting some airplay on normal rock radio. My personal favorite stuff is when Robert Lowe took over singing. King of the Grey Islands is amazing stuff.

Great, not the best Candlemass song but they are awsome. As many people have mentioned, Doom Metal is really about riffs and mood, and is usually slow tempo. If you want to check out some different type of Doom you could go with Stoner Doom (more psychodelic stuff), tend to have a more rock sound or classic metal sound), probably listen to Sleep, they are very interesting and obviously you could check out some Funeral Doom (heavier, sadder and even slower in tempo, as usual with cookie monster vocals) like Skepticism, the song "The Rise Of The Flames" has an great live version on youtube, or Esoteric, also very good.

Candlemass HUGELY influenced Ghost/TF. He even sang a song with them live a couple years ago.
Indeed, it was The Well of Souls. Also, there is a rare edition of the House of Doom EP, where Papa Emeritus III sings. The ”Nameless Goul” also speaks in an interview about the Live album of Candlemass that he particularly enjoys.

I have never been a religious person. I straddle between atheism and agnosticism. When I discovered Candlemass about 20 years ago they quickly became one of my favorite bands. In fact I own most of their discography and one of their DVD's. You don't have to be a spiritual person to desire to do good for others. I think anyone with an ouce of care and empathy is capable of being moved by the lyrics in this song. I get choked up every time I listen to it

Let's challenge your ears with a really good song from Mercyfull Fate, A CORPSE WITHOUT A SOUL. In this song King Diamond put his voice on the limit.
Nice one guys! When you play slow you are vulnerable and there is little room for mistakes. The riffs also have to be up to par to get away with those tempos. Chugging away at a fast pace is great but it can act as camouflage. As for Christianity, it's a very common theme in doom metal. Wether it's about a crisis of faith or full devotion to God. Check out Trouble - The wish.

That dude is an Underrated guitarist. the dude can play with soul & feel and shred when needed.
It takes a bit to adjust to Candlemass's unique sound. The one thing that stands out so clearly is the incredible vocals. But this is sort of the quintessence of doom metal. Slow, sludgy but with very clean and clear production. Very dark, somewhat melodramatic but not corny as some black metal can sometimes feel. The good doom stuff anyways. I tend to prefer progressive doom metal, but Candlemass gets my respect because they were sort of the originators. You can hear alot of the sound of Black Sabbath in here which is one of the bands that inspired them and in turn doom metal. Really nice pick.

by the way, dunno if you saw but Metal Blade Records was livestreaming all of the new Behemoth record. Some really amazing songs on there, far better than the ones you have heard thus far.
Not sure they're the originators but certainly one of the pioneers of the genre.
