DOWN BY THE SALLY GARDENS - Kate Rusby
The poem written by WB Yeats was originally called "an old song re sung." Yeats indicated in a note that it was "an attempt to reconstruct an old song from three lines imperfectly remembered, heard sung by an old peasant woman in the village of Ballisodare, Sligo. The 'old song' he referred to was 'The Rambling Boys of Pleasure'." The words were subsequently set to music by Herbert Hughes using the traditional air "The Moorlough Shore" (also known as "The Maids of Mourne Shore") in 1909.

Lyrics to "Down By The Sally Gardens"
Down by the Sally Gardens, my love and I did meet
She passed the Sally Gardens with little snow-white feet
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the trees
But I being young and foolish, with her would not agree
With her would not agree
In a field down by the river, my love and I did stand
And on my leaning shoulder, she laid her snow-white hand
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs
But I was young and foolish, and now I am full of tears
And now I am full of tears
Down by the Sally Gardens, my love and I did meet
She passed the Sally Gardens with little snow-white feet
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the trees
But I being young and foolish, and with her would not agree
And with her would not agree
