Hi Vicky! You and Peter have been doing some incredible music, to say the least! Love all of your Beatles reactions, but you've been branching out into some unbelievable music from other artists. This one here, David Bowie, caught my eye as well! Bowie is a tremendous artist and musician, and I am totally here for this program, and any other Bowie songs you may choose to react to in the future!
PS-you're wonderful, Vicky, but when you and Peter are together on a program, that's real magic! Appreciate what you both are doing on this program!

Nice! "Panic in Detroit" marked Bowie's retelling of stories Iggy Pop told him about the 1967 Detroit Riots which lasted five days, left over forty people dead, four hundred buildings destroyed, and thousands more injured or arrested. The song is built around a Bo Diddley style shuffle beat, which, according to reports, the drummer refused to play, leaving guitarist Mick Ronson to carry the beat along with a conga player Bowie brought into fill out the song. The backing vocalists provide the memorable wails evoking the violence of the riots in a similar way to what Merry Clayton's backing vocals do for The Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter".
Bowie recorded Aladdin Sane only a few months after producing the Stooges third album, Raw Power. "Search and Destroy" and "Gimme Danger" is two of the bangers from that album, but it's quite different in style from the styles on Aladdin Sane, which is filled with avant-garde piano rather than screaming guitars. When your're ready for more from Aladdin Sane also check out "Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?)", "Lady Grinning Soul", and "Drive-In Saturday".
Detroit is a city in the US state of Michigan. It is located on the border with Canada across the Detroit river from Windsor, Ontario. The Ford and General Motors automobile companies were headquartered there for decades starting in the 1920s when the industry took form. The city was host to numerous factories building automobile engines and was soon nicknamed "The Motor City". Detroit was also headquarters to Motown Records which took its name from a combination of motor and town and the city was home to many legendary musicians during the 20th century, including Iggy Pop, Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder, Alice Cooper, Eminem, the White Stripes, and the MC5.

Thanks for the insightful info! We didn’t realize the deep connection between Panic in Detroit and the 1967 riots, or that Mick Ronson had to carry the beat. The link to Iggy Pop’s Raw Power and the distinct style of Aladdin Sane is fascinating too. Plus, the background on Detroit and its musical heritage adds so much depth to Bowie’s work. Appreciate you sharing this!
