Fangio has the highest win rate of all time taking into account the number of races he entered. In an era where reliability was an afterthought, that's pretty incredible...
Reverence was indeed Ayrtons perspective of Clark, and in a somewhat unusual display of modesty, he spoke of Jim as "the best of the best." Senna actually commissioned a famous Mexican artist to create a painting for him... depicting the grid at Monaco, with all of Formula 1 historically greatest champions lining the grid.... the order didn't matter, however Senna had specifically stipulated that Jim Clark occupy pole. Also, if you ever visit the museum chronicling Clarks life in his humble hometown, you will see Ayrton's name on the check in list. Sadly, both the circumstances around their deaths would be eerily similar. Both of them were in their early 30s, both suddenly and mysteriously careening off the track at high speed for no apparent reason, both known for their immense natural talent being tragically cut short.... Even more odd, the teammate for Clark in the 1968 season was Graham Hill, who lifted the spirits of the team afterwards by proceeding to win the championship that year. 26 years later, Ayrtons teammate for the 1994 season? Grahams own son, Damon Hill, who would also proceed to win the championship, becoming the first ever father-son duo to accomplish the feat.
Senna’s favourite driver was Terry Fullerton, totally unheard of today. That must have made him so incredibly proud. I love that little fact in the Senna film
Probably the greatest driver ever. He made legends, look like also-rans. It would be as if a driver made the Aryton Senna and Alain Prost of his generation, look po-si-tive-ly normal. And he won with anything and everything, from Ford Cortinas to Indycars. Mechanics said that he was horrible at developing cars because of his ability to drive around problems. He would take a dog of a car and turn it into a race winner. When the mechanics would ask him what's wrong with the car, he would basically say, "Nothing much." Legend.
Reminds me of Ronnie Peterson. A talent so raw that they both could drive any kind of machinery and make it competitive. Probably the two most naturally talented F1 driver of all time.
Jim Clark was the GOAT of F1, no questions asked. Throughout his career he was always in the championship hunt (if his car would be reliable) but he was a normal man out of F1 in Duns, his home town. I have seen his museum and the trophies he has won is remarkable. This man proved that being quiet in Formula 1 can lead you to greatness. #RIPJimClark
Jim Clark was the greatest driver I've ever seen race.. For Fangio to name him as the greatest of all time is the highest compliment of all. Clark was simply in a class of his own.. and he had no need for any of the intimidatory tactics used by later pretenders to his throne. Why? Because you don't need to if you're out in front.. Certainly he was not a 'blocker' in the manner of Schumacher.. or Senna. He was unfailingly modest and courteous on and off the track. There'll never be another.
It's sad that most people only talk about Michael Schumacher or Ayrton Senna, if it comes to the question who is the greatest F1 driver of all times !!
As a big Schumacher fan, Fangio and Clark were, are and will be the greatest drivers F1 ever had... These are true legends... Not to hate on Senna and Schumacher but if you consider the condition Clark and Fangio raced and won championships they were true racers and fighters at the same time.. The reason why every1 say Senna or Schumacher as the greatest F1 driver is because F1 is promoting only these 2 drivers... So every new fan the only old drivers they know are Senna and Schumacher..
Seeing Jim driving his first F1 race at Zandvoort brings back sweet memories. I immediately recognized his superb driving skills and as a teenager instantly became a great fan of Jim. Saw him driving every year since 1960 at Spa, Nurburgring and Zandvoort. Following F1 ever since he died I think he still s the best driver ever.
This is really nicely put together, not the least bit mawkish or over the top. It's great for F1 fans old & new to be treated to the occasional reflection on the history of the sport. Drivers like Jim Clark were so focused. Pure, dogged racers, they epitomised toughness and courage. And, despite the staggeringly high risk of dying, or ending a race to find out a friend had died, they never wavered in their desire to keep going faster, faster, faster.
JIM CLARK - By far the greatest driver ever - no doubt. He is and was "The Best of the Best" (Fangio, Senna, Prost, Stewart and countless others about Clark). No other driver in history until today was so superior as Clark - No other driver as so much "Grand Slam" - Pole/Win/Fastest Lap/Leading every lap of the race - like him. And all that from just 72 starts... ! This man is the Olymp of driving - the Michelangelo of racing - a dynamic art at the highest level. So smooth, so precise, so fast....simply out of this world. One, who won in Spa by 5 minutes (!) in monsoon rain with only one hand at the wheel (!) because of gearbox trouble...One, who takes back a complete lap (!) in Monza and back into the lead... One, who took pole on the original 22,8 km Nürburgring track by 9 (!) seconds and more....One who won Indy by 2 whole (!) laps... In 1965 he had the most succesful year of a driver in the history of the sport: He won the F1 World Championship, the Tasman Series with F1 cars, the Indy 500, the British and French F2 Championship, the British Touring car Championship, totally over 50 (!) victories in one season !!!! For eternity and by lightyears unmatched in the sport. That`s just some examples of his mesmeric unique genius...
An otherwise more unknown "statistic" to me, that is just another clear illustration towards Jim being the Greatest, is the fact that he finished in 2nd place, only a single time in his entire career.... Owing to the fact that he won, and won often.... and when he didn't, it was usually far off from being able to do so due to reliability/and or other conditions out of his control. But he simply was so purely skilled and talented, but in total uniqueness to his ability atypical of racing drivers, he always drove clean and fluidly, consistently and calmly.... while remaining fast as all hell. Simply the best.
As said by Jeremy Clarkson: If he was not a Champion he would be called a Scott. But he was a genius, so england decides he's British. David Couthard = Scottish Clark = British
Michael Schumacher had 5 grand slams, Ayrton Senna had 4 grandslams. Jim Clark well he had 8 grandslams.Jim had theHighest win ratio and had the second best pole position ratio after Fangio. If that lotus of his had been reliable enough he would have won 3 more championships and if he hadn't died god knows how many championships he would have won. He could win in any type of car. He was and is truly the greatest driver of all time.
Most underrated driver in F1 and definitely should be in top 3 f1 drivers of all time and IMO one of the best drivers of all the time in general. His ability to get in any car and being able to driver it even with a poor setup is legendary.
Clark's most definitely not underated, he's regarded as one of the greatest, if not then thee greatest racing driver of all time. I'd put Clark No:1 every single time, he was the greatest natural racing talent this planets ever seen
@@northern_lights9333 He's actually #13 for me. If he raced longer and didn't die early; he'd win 5 championships and be top 5 but I can't remove guys like Alonso; Piquet and Brabham from top 10. The problem with these lists is about 18 guys deserve a top 10 spot but you can only have 10.
If you could pick any driver of any generation in the history of the sport...I would pick Jim Clark every time. For me, he is by far the greatest naturally talented racing driver this world has ever seen. Add to that he was an even better example of gentleman and a true credit to the sport and to his country of Scotland 🏴
My hero . When i was a boy he was the main man. My mother bought me shoes with a grand prix tread on the soul and had grand prix charts and pictures on my bedroom walls. I remember hearing of his death then shutting off from f1 because evrytime i saw his car I felt he should still be here and winning races. I was sitting at his grave today with the sun shining and the birds singing, just chatting!
I remember visiting the 1986 Grand Prix at the old Hockenheim circuit, and was taking the long walk to the Ostkurve bend, where I planned to view the race, and as I walked along the forest track heading for my viewing spot,I came across the very simple memorial to Jimmy in the forest. Surprisingly, there was nobody else around, and for a few moments I stood at the simple little stone cross with a few bunches of flowers around it, and remembered not only the legend, but his parents who had lost their their youngest child and only son in pursuit of his dreams. Rest in Peace Champ.
Not only THE GREATEST F1 driver, but the GOAT driver of all. Jim could drive the wheels off anything, F1 car, saloon car and even rally. His talent was off the scale and it was completely natural- no background in kart racing as a child to hone his skills. I was born two years after Jim was lost at Hockenheim, over the years, the more I have learnt about him, the more I am convinced that he is the greatest naturally talented driver of all. When Fangio and Senna heap praise on another driver it really means something.
A true champion lost too soon. He not only raced F1 cars but also saloon cars and I can still see him in my mind cornering on two wheels in the Lotus Cortina. I was blessed to see him race. That third place at Monza in 1967 was after he had unlapped himself and ran out of fuel to coast over the line. If he hadn't run out of fuel he would have won the race which had one of the closest finishes in F1 history between Jack Brabham and John Surtees - 0.02 seconds if I recall correctly.

Chapman's mistake was trying to make the fastest car he could, and in the process the car being fragile. If he had been concerned with designing a fast, but especially resistant car, and trusted Clark's ability to drive faster than all other drivers, I believe, Clark may have won more championships. Maybe not as many races, but more titles.
There's an urban legend Senna at one point asked an Mexican Painter to paint a fantasy race with Fangio, Jackie Stewart, himself, Emerson Fittipaldi (this was before Schumacher's successes, obviously since Senna died long before Michael's reign; also Prost was out of this painting because Senna was being all contentious against Prost). He said the racers could be painted in any position/place, BUT pole position HAD to be Jim Clark, as Senna remarked "because he was the best of the best". Not confirmed but whoa is that a statement from the almighty Ayrton Senna.

He’s the best F1 driver of all time. If Juan Manuel Fangio, Ayrton Senna and Jackie Stewart said so then he’s undoubtedly the best F1 driver of all time.

Jim Clark won 25 races and finished runner-up once. ONCE!! If his car didn't break down, he was going to win the race. For me he's the GOAT.
Dan Martin the greatest statistic that any driver holds!

That would be a great addition for the F1 TV offer: documentaries about past seasons and outstanding drivers :)
Jim Clark and Joey Dunlop had to race to put "food on the table". The Stars of today travel by private Jets and race in super safe conditions. Respect to the "old guys". (Sorry for ranting.)
Happy birthday to the greatest.
It's been 54 years Jimmy. Seems like just yesterday for anyone who envied your driving ability.
Jim is so underrated
Nothing further can be said about Jim Clark but what Colin Chapman did.
Honour to the greatest.
Greatness personified. Legend.
If you mention Jim Clark in an F1 discussion, it'll make the most hardened Senna, Schumacher, or Hamilton fanboy think twice before saying anything.
The greatest for me, I've just sen some vídeos of Jim, he wars and Will be as fangio said the greatest grand prix hacer of all time
Damm 50 years wow #neverforgetjim
The F1-cars of the late sixties are the most beautifull ever made (my oppinion), Taken notice of them in the old F1-game Grand Prix Legends.
