i do feel as if storygraph is constantly improving! the founder is very good at asking users what they want and runs polls and votes a lot for formatting and goals that users prefer and i’m pretty sure there has been improvements for transferring data! obviously not for everyone but i personally do recommend people give it a try for the .5/.25 stars, the dnf option, the genre and page and rating breakdowns and the physical/kindle/audio breakdowns as i’ve always found those much more helpful compared to anything goodreads offers :)

YES! SG is always improving! I'm always suggesting that people give it another go if they haven't checked it out for a few months because so much will have changed in that time!
i really like it, even though im still using goodreads as well (i have friends on there). The only downside is I want to review the book in detail (bc you actually can do it on storygraph), but it takes a long time so i push it to a different time, and i end up never rating my books on there, maybe it's just me.. I really love that they have buddy reads and book clubs though, even though I don't really use those features

Goodreads was also driving me CRAZY for years! I'm now a full time StoryGraph girlie and would never go back to GR. They are constantly updating the app and making it better! If you haven't tried SG for a while give it another chance - I bet it would be a completely different experience for you. SG works so hard to improve things, where GR literally does nothing. Both the desktop and app versions are so much easier for me than GR ever was! And YES to actually using our books rather than treating them like they have to stay pristine!
Libby is THAT GIRL! I absolutely adore Libby. I will request my physical TBR books on there and it helps me get through them faster.
You can customize your Goodreads feed! You can change the settings on desktop, next to the header 'updates' is a settings icon. You can change it to 'book updates only' or 'reviews only'. It makes it a lot more fun to scroll through ;)
Growing up even my family called me weird for reading all the time but im turning 30 this year and honestly I been back to reading. And no longer care if I get called names for doin something that I enjoy ... remember do what makes you happy ❤
3 ⭐️ is 100% not a bad book and I’m so glad you brought that to light. I have given many books 3⭐️ and I recommend them especially since everyone’s taste in books are different you never know it could be a 5 for them

You can make a dnf shelf on goodreads as one of your main shelves, next to Want to Read, Currently Reading and Read. So it would not be a sub-shelf but one of the main list
TheStoryGraph has a .5 star rating and a dnf feature!

love this! been waiting for it since the weekly vlog. i know you said you worry about the quality of sit down videos but think of it this way-podcasts are all the rage right now aaand sit down videos are just mini podcasts. i actually like sit down videos more bc i don’t have to watch it i can just listen while cleaning or wtv
couldn’t agree more about worn olds !! i work at a daycare and love to see the books get worn out, it just means that they have been loved over and over again. i keep the same perspective for my personal books too ❤️

If you use goodreads from the desktop you can actually select what you see on the updates page, there's a little wheel that says customize and you can choose what kind of content you want to see and also from who the content comes from. Maybe this will help you a little bit!

@@sarahchristinesbookshelf I think the only way to stop every update from going into the home page is deleting it from your profile (from desktop, there's no way to do it from the app). What I suggested in my previous comment helps you sorting through the updates coming from people you follow or are friends with, for example if you select book updates only you will get rid of all the "x liked this, y commented on this" and you'll be able to see what everyone is reading easily. It doesn't make it perfect, but I feel like it improves my user experience
Hi! I think there are settings on goodreads to change what you want to be made public and posted. If you click on your profile picture on the top right (on the desktop site) then go to "account settings" then click on "feed" along the bar, you can adjust what things you want others to see on your feed. Hope this helps :)
Loving this video! I've used Goodreads on and off my whole reading career and I do admit it is very flawed but something keeps pulling me back in lol. ALSO thank you for mentioning that dog-earing pages is okay!

I think Kindles are worth it if you travel a lot, are renting a home and want to downsize on bookshelf space. It's also a nice way to carry around huge books. Sometimes top books are cheaper in e form than physical form as well.
I know one thing for sure that I’m Happy that Des posted before I get out of work today because ik today’s gonna be great ❤

Hi Destiny! On Goodreads, you can choose what other people see on their feed (that you’ve posted or commented on) by going to your Account Settings and then Feeds.
As for what you see on your feed (if you’re on the desktop version), look to the right of where it says Updates and there’s a Customize tab. Click on that and you should be able to choose what you see like Book Updates Only or
Reviews Only, etc. Hope this helps! 😊

You can actually update your feed preferences on the web version of Goodreads. For example you can select reviews only or if you only want to see updates from your top friends, and you can uncheck comment on someone's review etc. It drove me crazy until I figured this out!

I had the same problems with Goodreads! I literally had to google how to edit what I see on my homepage cuz I was so over it. So…long story short, you can change your settings so that you only see reading update posts! You just have to do it on a web browser, you can’t do it through the app.
actually you can refine your goodreads homepage feed, on the desktop/web page, you can press customize and then pick what you want to see.
its not perfect since you can only choose reviews only, updates only or EVERYTHING (that includes comments and stuff) - id love to be able to pick reviews and updates only.

for your first goodreads comment, in settings you can select which updates are seen on the homepage (for yourself at least) if that makes any sense at all.

I have had my Kindle since I was 14. I’m now 23 and let me just tell you that thing is indestructible and the battery life is insanneeee!
Great video as always💕. I absolutely agree that having a Kindle is worth it (I've read so many more books this year than usual because of it), and I also agree about Goodreads needing to update (I really want to see more of my GR friends updates but the updates I get are so random).
I ❤ the fact I’m starting to see comments the book community talking about using StoryGraph! I just started reading again consistently since June 2022 and wish I would have known there are other options. I personally switched to SG and I love that it has more options and the graphics are so much fun to look at. Listen it was easy to switch. Des is 💯% on point and that’s why I switched earlier this year.

I know that people hate how outdated goodreads is but I actually like the simplicity 😭 I do desperately want a DNF shelf on there though!! I tried Storygraph and I feel like it is just doing way too much for what I want.
Hii! I love your videos and I always wanted to see your rating System! I can only recommend The Storygraph as an alternative to Goodreads, because you were talking about how confusing and old school goodreads looks and works, and the story graph has a super clean layout i think you might like. You can also import the goodreads library, and the story graph isn't run by amazon like goodreads is, which is a huge plus, in my opinion. I would love to see you there! Just a thought 😊

Ive always seen 3 stars as a good rating! My rating system is pretty simple, but for people looking in, I would advise them to take my 5 stars with a grain of salt, because they could be poetically written or they could be meh-simply written. What made it 5 stars for me was truly just the 🌟5🌟 star feeling and I just enjoyed every second of reading it. Truly, if you want a solid rec from me, it would probably be those 3 star or 4 star books, safer anyhow. And since I dont rate DNFs, 1 star star books are usually reserved for books I hate read (like how is it this bad I cant stop reading it - example being November 9).
But also agree on storygraph, I want to like it but the app itself isnt asethetically pleasing and has never felt worth the trouble of moving to. I've built so much into goodreads, and I know you can import but I've already done that and it's gone too long to go back and have to manually add what has happened since. (Not saying that goodreads is pleasing, but I'm just used to it).

I've been using Storygraph since January and prefer it way more than Goodreads. I like Goodreads but Storygraphs keeps my need for things to be organized. I am very happy with all the details I can put in about the books I read and I like to look at all the graphs at the end of the month too. I agree and think that Goodreads needs to be updated very much to make it easier to use.

I was SUPER against kindle for the longest time and now i love mine! Especially because I use it for travel which I do a lot cause otherwise I would bring 10 books with me on a plane and thats heavy lol 13:42 !

I don't use notion but I've done something similar with a spreadsheet where I track literally everything about my reading! I actually love using something customized to myself compared to an app cus I can track whatever data I want, without limitations.

I know many people have beef with storygraph but hear me out. We have 0.5 and 0.25 ratings, we can import the data from goodreads, we have the dnf button, more stats, less community stuff, and a very fun wrapped. And for me it was 5 mins to set it up.

You can change your own settings on goodreads so that it doesn't post whenever you do something like comment on someone else's post. But yes it gets so clogged, I especially hate adding someone famous and they add 100 people every day 😭
