I’d like to mention some things that might go against your theory. 1. The fact that she (the little girl) is able to interact with zero in the first place, like how she makes the soup, cleans the room, tells zero to let her find her other toy, etc. 2. When you choose to live during the tragedy and comedy scene in the end, when you get home there’s a note stating “one life for another” which refers to the little girl as it is shown her kidnapped by the masked men. 3. If you look at the ending where you choose to live you get a scene where zero was the one who kills the scientist and in that scene no little girl was there (This also shows how zero isn’t the small child) . In fact we only see her in his nightmares, where we could control the small boy playing catch with the “little girl”. Those nightmares tried to make us think zero was the small boy. In the end you have a cool theory and i’m gonna wait for the dlc which hopefully answers all of our questions.

well, it's one year old but i guess i'll comment anyway. The issue here is that you're taking everything literally, not thinking about what things could symbolise. Imagine for a second that the little gir in the future is not real, when you make a choice to live, everyone magically dies, when facing the doctor, you battle with a trippy eldrich horror creature, imagine those are not real either. What is real then? What do those things symbolise? Well when he choose to live, he wasn't choosing that moment in time, he could have stopped all the suffering he caused to everyone in the middle of the jungle if he prioritized other people's lives over himself, so, to get his chronos and not die infinitelly, he chose to survive and killed all those people in the jungle, but the little girl survived. His actions had consequences though, by choosing to survive, tragedy and comedy would fall into her life, her childhood was stolen from her, so she grew up only focusing on one thing, destroying the government that stole her life. Rembember that zero is starting to suffer the effects of the withdrawl, his perception of reality is not to be trusted, he sees alternate realities all the time, he's a hobo in one, he's having fun with the little girl in another, he's fighting the eldrich horror, that you can clearly see, a real fight never happened as both you and the doctor are sitting when the battle ends, revealing that most likelly you were both just arguing and zero ended up throwing his sword at the doctor face.

If the little girl is just the imagination of zero why she can interact with real things, I believe that she maybe lied to us. We never see his father we just see his mother, who at the end of the game reveals to not even be his mother, she cleaned zero's room and give him a toy, how is she able to do that then?
In the ending scene, it is revealed that Zero was the one who shot the scientist then he meets up with Fifteen. I don't know how much of that is true or if it was another one of his distorted memories, but if it was, then that complicates things. Especially how a lot of people think the little boy in the shack was Zero.
I think that the kid is a null too, so Zero actually shot the kid, but then the kid turned back time to escape. Thats why Zero has memoreies of both shooting the child and not shooting the child. After the kid turned back time and hid, he didn't realize the kid was there, but the memory of the firt enoucnter was still bueried in his subsonciosu.

Glad to see someone analyzing the puzzle box of a plot that is Katana Zero! While I think it's possible the girl is Snow, there are a few points that (seemingly) clash with this assumption. First, who does the note left by the anonymous vandalist at the end refer to? It says "A life for a life", and unless even the note is non-existent, I'd say it's heavily implied it refers to the girl. Second, the girl is said to be about 5 years old in Zero's eyes. However, if we assume she survived the war, that'd make her only 12 in the present time since the war happened 7 years ago. It's not impossible, given that Zero was 15 during the war (if the dossier about hin being 22 van be trusted - and there may be evidence against this), but for her to look so mature and be so apt with a sword at that age seems weird to me. Anyway, great job with the vid! Hopefully the DLC will indeed clear up a few things. And even if not, it's still an amazing game with such a thought-provoking narrative frame =)

The reason I think that zero is the masked guy and the kid is if normal zero kills kid zero the scene stops as if the universe or cronos won't allow it
For people saying the small girl and the masked scientists are hallucinations: 1. The girl interacts with things around Zero. 2. The girl found V's tape, or was given to by him. 3. The scientists killed the police in Chinatown (Even the police see them because one of them gets shocked seeing them teleport into the scene) 4. The scientists trashed up Zero's Apartment. 5. The govenment secret lab is where we go next to find the Masked Scientists, not just because Zero felt like it. Conclusion: In a world where drugs give you Time Manipulation and Super Power and Teleporting(fifteen), or turn you into a bloody Akira reference, those Masked Scientists are real af.
I don't know about the little girl, but I think the masked scientists are "mind fragments" of Zero. The killing of the cops at Chinatown could very well have been Zero doing the dash attack of Dragon's, another gamma null around the same skill level, but framed as a massacre from the scientists. Zero has memory issues due to both an injury in war and his withdrawal from chronos, so Chinatown could've been him improvising an attack that he forgot in a life-or-death moment
Although I don't have a standing on either side, I think it's worth mentioning that : The Psychiatrist boss isn't canon, so the Akira thing unfortunately doesn't check out. As for the Chinatown interaction, the people there were the cops, the masked men, and zero. By the end of it, all of the cops are dead, and only the masked men and Zero are left. It's possible that the entire scene was a hallucination as our only witness to it was Zero. I do agree about the little girl interacting and V giving her the tape tho.

From my understanding of the little girl I'm guessing she never existed and was a product of Chronos induced hallucinations, mainly due to fact that she said that she doesn't want the masked men to come back She could be talking about comedy and tragedy in the rooftop scene which might imply she does know of their existence, and in the ending she is crying next to them while they're talking so that solidifies the situation for me
There could be some crossed timeline shenanigans going on - as well as OR instead of hallucinations. Zero could be the little boy in the shack, the nightmare shadow, and the homeless man. The little girl could be real as herself and be Snow. I don't think we have enough to go on yet, but it's been a lot of fun to think about.
I think the shadowy silhouette of the girl in the flashbacks is supposed to be the dinosaur toy that she carries. In a later flashback scene (when things start to clear up) she transforms into the dinosaur toy (sorry I currently forgot the name of it). I think he originally sees it as a shadow of the little girl because he links those things together.
My guess is that comedy and tragedy used a similar drug as the one the psychistrist used against Zero. This drug lets them mess with people heads in several ways, and one could be the ability to erase someone from the collective memory.
You know I’m not sure if it’s updated but there’s an ending that shows the 2 masked guys with the little girl at the end, signifying that they took her. I’m pretty sure she exists along with the fact that she’s possibly the therapist’s daughter
By the way, I'm almost certain that Snow is based off of the very old samurai series, Lady Snowblood. Lady Snowblood began as a manga series following a swordswoman whose life revolves around the vengeance she must exact for her family. Those manga were later interpreted into two movies in the 70s. Another interesting thing is that those movies heavily influenced Kill Bill. They even watched Lady Snowblood while shooting Kill Bill in order to emulate the appeal of those movies (and the actress who played Snowblood gave her full blessing for that influence). The cinematography, the characters, the special effects, the plot even, and some of the music comes directly from Lady Snowblood. So what I see is that Snow is very similar to Snowblood in character and aesthetic. Both are women samurai, both have a fierce and cold attitude, both dress similarly, and, my favorite part, that part with the pink petals flowing over the screen? Its identical to the opening of the first Lady Snowblood movie, only instead of pink petals they are blood red. Now if thats true, I wonder if V is based off of anybody...
I believe that the little girl is the therapist’s daughter, but when she was taken by comedy and tragedy she was kind of wiped from existence so no one remembers her except for zero who is greatly connected to tragedy after choosing the mask of death
This is a common belief, but I don't think it is canon. If I recall correctly, the paperweight on the therapist's desk is a gift from his daughter, which implies she may have obtained it on her travels as an adult. I haven't played this game in years, but I'm sure it is worth revisiting in preparation for the upcoming DLC!
I know ZERO trained in Shinkage Ryu school, and i believe FIFTEEN was trained in Iaijutsu school. My question, does anyone know Snow's school? She by far has the coolest stance, and knowing her school might say something about her as it does for FIFTEEN and ZERO, lemme explain. Shinkage Ryu (ZERO): standard but effective swordsmanship training, primarily focused on achieving victory at any price, *greatly suited for fighting bigger battles with and against numbers of people,* oriented around the battlefield. Philosophical concept: Sword of only one cut, and an emphasis on avoiding the centre line of the battlefield and slinking around oponents attacks in order to counteract. Iaijutsu (FIFTEEN, i think): niche swordsmanship training, not quite as useful as it used to be. Primarily focused on quick, precise attacks thought out beforehand and usually from a distance. Emphasis on catching opponents by surprise, in order to end a fight before it even starts. Not used on the battlefield, the quick-draw stance is merely useful for personal protection in a warrior's day-to-day life and *personal gain.* You can already deduct a bunch of facts from the two's schools, maybe snow is no different.
Yeah I thought as much too. Snow may very well be the same girl but of course the story Leaves far more questions than answers and in this case Im not so sure if we've been given enough to make much in the way of plausible theories. Beyond that its fairly certain between the desparity of our protagonists war memories dating back over ten years ago and the document marking him as barely over 21 its pretty clear he's not a reliable narrator for anything regarding his past or present.
I have a mathematical theory about the Chronos effect. I think that using the slowdown ability (apparently coming from the Chronos usage) slows down time to x0.25. So let's say Zero constantly feels that time is running for him in 0.25 speed. And the confession he (probably he) makes for being "28 years in this godforsaken jungle..." can be his perception again of feeling those 7 years in 0.25 speed and when you multiply this 4 times it gets exactly to 28 years as he's saying. In conclusion my theory is that while Zero is on Chronos - time runs for him 4 times slower making him feel it 4 times longer than normal. Who knows - those 10 days in which the main story is spanned could be 40 days in Zero's perception (excluding the nightmare scenes where he lacks the Chronos inside him for a while).
When i was playing I really thought that the girl was the daughter of the psychiatrist. In the scene where we kill the psychiatrist we hear him say that " I havent Been able to contact my daughter all day" and later we find out that she was abducted. But thats just as theory
I would assume that it's not the little girl as before you meet the psychiatrist you kill another user of chronos and you end up be-heading them, and since we know that the psychiatrist has access to chronos it would make sense that it was his daughter
I'm not sure if you mentioned this in your theory but I think that the psychiatrist is the rightful owner of the girl, it would answer why there would be a child in the 3rd District, they also look alike with skin tone and all, plus the psychiatrist is probably in the same living conditions as zero since they are both trying to get out of the 3rd District.

there might be some time travel stuff going and the fact that there's a nigh omnipotence character specifically the masked people, at first I thought little was the woman I've killed in a fight.
when zero entered the house with the children he was already an adult, it's impossible the kid is snow because that would mean she would have to grow up and therefore zero would be old, which he isn't
I think you’re forgetting about a key element here: Chronos. Remember we don’t quite fully understand ALL of the effects it has on aging, skewed perception of time, etc. Snow could have been part of a later generation of “Null” or a similar project.
One thing I feel like I should mention, when you choose to live when having the last conversation with tragedy and comedy, all the soldiers die instantly. This could imply that both figures are real, and knowing that, the girl could also be real, as she is kidnapped by them at the end.

I just realized, after the battle with headhunter you are confronted with the fact that you were the nightmare, but in one of the parts where the memory was glitching it showed tragedy, could tragedy and comedy be the embodiment of the cromags zero killed?
I believe Snow or Fifteen will be the protag for a Katana Zero 2, and Zero will die in the DLC, cause what he wants to do is nothing more than a suicide mission, and he's on withdraw (i think the secret boss ending makes more sense, the one where he doesn't take chronos, not the fight itself, but the "not injecting 5 doses of chronos" part)
Zero only started to see the girl figure in the nightmares after he met the little girl. even so, they didn't last. i think its clear the little girl was NOT present in the actual history of that event. this was just him connecting the child, or children, executed in the villages and war, to the little girl. projecting her to his scarred past, and quasi redeeming his past by taking care of her. the only real connection i could see to the girl being a figment of his hallucinations would be the leviathan toy. the fact that Zero took it from the past and had it stored under his couch, which the little girl was searching for....is odd. either way i don't see any connection with the little girl to snow, just the possibility that the little girl does not actually exist.
I reed a comment and i agree, she can be a null as well, cuz there was a scientist, probably former mecca SCIENTIST, so he had the info to do so, and i also belive, as comedy/tragedy can kill ppl like nothing, they can also erase someone from ppls mind, cuz zero's room is messed up in real life, so the kid exists
It's funny--I gave this game a 6/10 over on HowLongToBeat, but now I can't get enough of these lore videos. One of my main gripes with the game is the obtuse way the story is presented, but with you filling in the holes, it makes the entire package seem better in hindsight. Anyway, thanks for the vids!

I personally think the girl is real, I have no proof but the girl being real would make the story that much more interesting. Fighting the government, searching for stable amounts of Chronos and saving a little friend.
This is what I came up with. Zero is at least 32 years old and he is dying, during all game long. We are not PLAYing present time, ever. As gameplay indicates we are REPLAYing memories or tapes over and over again with more or less accuracy while he gets closer and closer to death by a lack of chronos on his blood stream. Although, V presumed that time would slow down until frozen for a GAMA without chronos, a broken mind without reality input would rapidly dissociate into fantasy. Zero is extremely desensitized, saying "i only fell alive when killing", so most of the game is he dreaming the best ways to execute people. Most of the other events we experience trough gameplay, besides slaughtering, are his most important ones. Moments that gave him impressions so strong he cant handle representing himself and prefers to be portraited on different role. I wanna a video on his relationship with the poor guy trying to get his war medal, the veterans on bar and why he should not talk to the DJ.

Was my initial assumption? Truth be told gender isn't really all that specified. Even headhunter *"Null girl"* and Fifteen are ambiguous, men and women can have hair like that.
is it really the truth that Zero was the nightmare and not the child? That ending is really unclear, but here's some things that aren't unclear: -The war vets that Zero runs into all say that his badge looks fake or that he's too young to have served. They point out that he would have been a child during the war. Guess who was a child during the war. -The therapist guy says that they just picked him up and hooked him on Chronos to make him a soldier but not that he was part of NULL originally. -Zero himself questions that he even served if you pick the right dialog options. -The vet that tries to take his badge also says that Zero looks like one of those Cromag bastards, so he could have been a Cromag child in a shack that they found and then brainwashed. Something that might counter those points is that Fifteen and the head hunter don't look old enough to be Cromag war vets either.

Maybe the girl is real. Maybe she's the psychiatrist daughter, since she disappears and at the final psy's scene he sais he cannot find his daughter.
I thought that at first, but some dialogue options reveal his daughter is out studying in London. This girl is way too young for college.

NULLs are only made by the New Mecca government and there is no reason for it to send soldiers to kill a NULL in training.

It's not impossible, given that Zero was 15 during the war (if the dossier about hin being 22 van be trusted - and there may be evidence against this), but for her to look so mature and be so apt with a sword at that age seems weird to me.
Anyway, great job with the vid! Hopefully the DLC will indeed clear up a few things. And even if not, it's still an amazing game with such a thought-provoking narrative frame =)

The reason I think that zero is the masked guy and the kid is if normal zero kills kid zero the scene stops as if the universe or cronos won't allow it

For people saying the small girl and the masked scientists are hallucinations:
1. The girl interacts with things around Zero.
2. The girl found V's tape, or was given to by him.
3. The scientists killed the police in Chinatown (Even the police see them because one of them gets shocked seeing them teleport into the scene)
4. The scientists trashed up Zero's Apartment.
5. The govenment secret lab is where we go next to find the Masked Scientists, not just because Zero felt like it.
Conclusion: In a world where drugs give you Time Manipulation and Super Power and Teleporting(fifteen), or turn you into a bloody Akira reference, those Masked Scientists are real af.
I don't know about the little girl, but I think the masked scientists are "mind fragments" of Zero. The killing of the cops at Chinatown could very well have been Zero doing the dash attack of Dragon's, another gamma null around the same skill level, but framed as a massacre from the scientists. Zero has memory issues due to both an injury in war and his withdrawal from chronos, so Chinatown could've been him improvising an attack that he forgot in a life-or-death moment
Although I don't have a standing on either side, I think it's worth mentioning that :
The Psychiatrist boss isn't canon, so the Akira thing unfortunately doesn't check out. As for the Chinatown interaction, the people there were the cops, the masked men, and zero.
By the end of it, all of the cops are dead, and only the masked men and Zero are left. It's possible that the entire scene was a hallucination as our only witness to it was Zero.
I do agree about the little girl interacting and V giving her the tape tho.

From my understanding of the little girl I'm guessing she never existed and was a product of Chronos induced hallucinations, mainly due to fact that she said that she doesn't want the masked men to come back
She could be talking about comedy and tragedy in the rooftop scene which might imply she does know of their existence, and in the ending she is crying next to them while they're talking so that solidifies the situation for me
There could be some crossed timeline shenanigans going on - as well as OR instead of hallucinations. Zero could be the little boy in the shack, the nightmare shadow, and the homeless man. The little girl could be real as herself and be Snow. I don't think we have enough to go on yet, but it's been a lot of fun to think about.
I think the shadowy silhouette of the girl in the flashbacks is supposed to be the dinosaur toy that she carries. In a later flashback scene (when things start to clear up) she transforms into the dinosaur toy (sorry I currently forgot the name of it). I think he originally sees it as a shadow of the little girl because he links those things together.
My guess is that comedy and tragedy used a similar drug as the one the psychistrist used against Zero. This drug lets them mess with people heads in several ways, and one could be the ability to erase someone from the collective memory.
You know I’m not sure if it’s updated but there’s an ending that shows the 2 masked guys with the little girl at the end, signifying that they took her. I’m pretty sure she exists along with the fact that she’s possibly the therapist’s daughter

By the way, I'm almost certain that Snow is based off of the very old samurai series, Lady Snowblood. Lady Snowblood began as a manga series following a swordswoman whose life revolves around the vengeance she must exact for her family. Those manga were later interpreted into two movies in the 70s. Another interesting thing is that those movies heavily influenced Kill Bill. They even watched Lady Snowblood while shooting Kill Bill in order to emulate the appeal of those movies (and the actress who played Snowblood gave her full blessing for that influence). The cinematography, the characters, the special effects, the plot even, and some of the music comes directly from Lady Snowblood.
So what I see is that Snow is very similar to Snowblood in character and aesthetic. Both are women samurai, both have a fierce and cold attitude, both dress similarly, and, my favorite part, that part with the pink petals flowing over the screen? Its identical to the opening of the first Lady Snowblood movie, only instead of pink petals they are blood red. Now if thats true, I wonder if V is based off of anybody...
I believe that the little girl is the therapist’s daughter, but when she was taken by comedy and tragedy she was kind of wiped from existence so no one remembers her except for zero who is greatly connected to tragedy after choosing the mask of death
This is a common belief, but I don't think it is canon. If I recall correctly, the paperweight on the therapist's desk is a gift from his daughter, which implies she may have obtained it on her travels as an adult. I haven't played this game in years, but I'm sure it is worth revisiting in preparation for the upcoming DLC!
I know ZERO trained in Shinkage Ryu school, and i believe FIFTEEN was trained in Iaijutsu school. My question, does anyone know Snow's school? She by far has the coolest stance, and knowing her school might say something about her as it does for FIFTEEN and ZERO, lemme explain.
Shinkage Ryu (ZERO): standard but effective swordsmanship training, primarily focused on achieving victory at any price, *greatly suited for fighting bigger battles with and against numbers of people,* oriented around the battlefield. Philosophical concept: Sword of only one cut, and an emphasis on avoiding the centre line of the battlefield and slinking around oponents attacks in order to counteract.
Iaijutsu (FIFTEEN, i think): niche swordsmanship training, not quite as useful as it used to be. Primarily focused on quick, precise attacks thought out beforehand and usually from a distance. Emphasis on catching opponents by surprise, in order to end a fight before it even starts. Not used on the battlefield, the quick-draw stance is merely useful for personal protection in a warrior's day-to-day life and *personal gain.*
You can already deduct a bunch of facts from the two's schools, maybe snow is no different.
Yeah I thought as much too. Snow may very well be the same girl but of course the story Leaves far more questions than answers and in this case Im not so sure if we've been given enough to make much in the way of plausible theories. Beyond that its fairly certain between the desparity of our protagonists war memories dating back over ten years ago and the document marking him as barely over 21 its pretty clear he's not a reliable narrator for anything regarding his past or present.
I have a mathematical theory about the Chronos effect.
I think that using the slowdown ability (apparently coming from the Chronos usage) slows down time to x0.25.
So let's say Zero constantly feels that time is running for him in 0.25 speed. And the confession he (probably he) makes for being "28 years in this godforsaken jungle..." can be his perception again of feeling those 7 years in 0.25 speed and when you multiply this 4 times it gets exactly to 28 years as he's saying.
In conclusion my theory is that while Zero is on Chronos - time runs for him 4 times slower making him feel it 4 times longer than normal.
Who knows - those 10 days in which the main story is spanned could be 40 days in Zero's perception (excluding the nightmare scenes where he lacks the Chronos inside him for a while).
When i was playing I really thought that the girl was the daughter of the psychiatrist. In the scene where we kill the psychiatrist we hear him say that " I havent Been able to contact my daughter all day" and later we find out that she was abducted.
But thats just as theory
I would assume that it's not the little girl as before you meet the psychiatrist you kill another user of chronos and you end up be-heading them, and since we know that the psychiatrist has access to chronos it would make sense that it was his daughter

What about the toys being the masks? And the girl gifting first the mask of death and then both to zero right before he could make a choice.
I'm not sure if you mentioned this in your theory but I think that the psychiatrist is the rightful owner of the girl, it would answer why there would be a child in the 3rd District, they also look alike with skin tone and all, plus the psychiatrist is probably in the same living conditions as zero since they are both trying to get out of the 3rd District.
Maybe Snow is Zero long lost sister that he did not remember cause of his memory lost.

I think you’re forgetting about a key element here: Chronos. Remember we don’t quite fully understand ALL of the effects it has on aging, skewed perception of time, etc.
Snow could have been part of a later generation of “Null” or a similar project.

One thing I feel like I should mention, when you choose to live when having the last conversation with tragedy and comedy, all the soldiers die instantly. This could imply that both figures are real, and knowing that, the girl could also be real, as she is kidnapped by them at the end.

I just realized, after the battle with headhunter you are confronted with the fact that you were the nightmare, but in one of the parts where the memory was glitching it showed tragedy, could tragedy and comedy be the embodiment of the cromags zero killed?
I believe Snow or Fifteen will be the protag for a Katana Zero 2, and Zero will die in the DLC, cause what he wants to do is nothing more than a suicide mission, and he's on withdraw (i think the secret boss ending makes more sense, the one where he doesn't take chronos, not the fight itself, but the "not injecting 5 doses of chronos" part)
Zero only started to see the girl figure in the nightmares after he met the little girl. even so, they didn't last. i think its clear the little girl was NOT present in the actual history of that event. this was just him connecting the child, or children, executed in the villages and war, to the little girl. projecting her to his scarred past, and quasi redeeming his past by taking care of her.
the only real connection i could see to the girl being a figment of his hallucinations would be the leviathan toy. the fact that Zero took it from the past and had it stored under his couch, which the little girl was searching for....is odd.
either way i don't see any connection with the little girl to snow, just the possibility that the little girl does not actually exist.

It's funny--I gave this game a 6/10 over on HowLongToBeat, but now I can't get enough of these lore videos. I personally think the girl is real, I have no proof but the girl being real would make the story that much more interesting. Fighting the government, searching for stable amounts of Chronos and saving a little friend.
This is what I came up with. Zero is at least 32 years old and he is dying, during all game long. We are not PLAYing present time, ever. As gameplay indicates we are REPLAYing memories or tapes over and over again with more or less accuracy while he gets closer and closer to death by a lack of chronos on his blood stream. Although, V presumed that time would slow down until frozen for a GAMA without chronos, a broken mind without reality input would rapidly dissociate into fantasy. Zero is extremely desensitized, saying "i only fell alive when killing", so most of the game is he dreaming the best ways to execute people. Most of the other events we experience trough gameplay, besides slaughtering, are his most important ones. Moments that gave him impressions so strong he cant handle representing himself and prefers to be portraited on different role. I wanna a video on his relationship with the poor guy trying to get his war medal, the veterans on bar and why he should not talk to the DJ.
So, was the real Zero the old-war-medal-bum all along? 🤔🤔🤔

That ending is really unclear, but here's some things that aren't unclear:
-The war vets that Zero runs into all say that his badge looks fake or that he's too young to have served. They point out that he would have been a child during the war. Guess who was a child during the war.
-The therapist guy says that they just picked him up and hooked him on Chronos to make him a soldier but not that he was part of NULL originally.
-Zero himself questions that he even served if you pick the right dialog options.
-The vet that tries to take his badge also says that Zero looks like one of those Cromag bastards, so he could have been a Cromag child in a shack that they found and then brainwashed.
Something that might counter those points is that Fifteen and the head hunter don't look old enough to be Cromag war vets either.
